  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the recycling possibility of waste oyster shells, which induce environmental pollutions by piling up out at the open or the temporary reclamation. The purpose of this study is to develope eco-friendly binder using waste oyster shells, and to reinforce dredged soils fur soft soil improvement. In this paper, a series of laboratory tests including compressive strength tests were performed to evaluate strength characteristics of soils treated by developed binder with different water content of dredged soils, mixing rates of binder, curing days. Based on test results, eco-friendly binders manufactured from waste oyster shells were estimated as good resource materials for soft soil improvements.

  • The aim of present research was to know Cd availability. As a first report of this work, we present some results of analysing soil Cd and Cu contents on a part of Burgundy in France. Soil samples were collected from surface-ploughed layer in fields across the southern part of the Yonne district, Burgundy, France. From the first extractable Cd content on a ratio (soil : EDTA =1:10), the soil Cd values on Carixien soil series decreased to a-third or to a-fourth of those Cd values on a lower ratio (soil : EDTA = 15). While the extractable Cd of the soil samples on Sols marron soil series decreased in a smaller extent. The changes of mixing ratio from 150 (soil : EDTA) to 1:10 and to 1:5 (soil : EDTA) had decreased the extractable Cu contents. But the range of the decrease was not so large as that of Cd contents. Soils on some soil series were a half (Carixien) or two-thirds level (Dombrien, Aubes) when comparing the extractable Cu content on 1:5 ratio to the content on 150 ratio. The absorbance for Cu analyses of soils on Carixien, Terres noires, Sols marron soil series varied in larger extent (expressed on standard deviation for 6 values) than that of soils on Dombrien, Aubes soil series.

  • This paper investigates strength characteristics and stress-strain behaviors of unreinforced and reinforced lightweight soils. Lightweight soil, composed of dredged soil, cement, and air-foam, was reinforced by a waste fishing net, in order to increase its compressive strength. Test specimens were fabricated by various mixing conditions, such as cement content, initial water content, air content, and waste fishing net; then, unconfined compression tests were carried out on these specimens. From the test results, it was shown that reinforced lightweight soil had different behavior after failure, even though it had similar behavior as unreinforced lightweight soil before failure. The test results also showed that stress became constant after peak strength in reinforced lightweight soil, while the stress decreased continuously in unreinforced lightweight soil. It was observed that the strength was increased due to reinforcing effect by the waste fishing net for most cases, except high water content greater than $218\%$. In the case of high water content, a reinforcing effect is negligible, due to slip between waste fishing net and soil particles. In reinforced lightweight soil, secant modulus (E50) was increased, due to the inclusion of waste fishing net.

  • Strength and compressibility characteristics of Light-Weighted Foam Soil (LWFS) are experimentally investigated in the paper. LWFS is composed of the dredged soils, cement and air foam to reduce unit-weight and to increase compressive strength. For these purposes, both unconfined compression tests and triaxial compression tests are carried out fer artficially prepared specimens of LWFS with various initial water contents, cement contents, mixing ratio of silty dredged soils and different confining stresses. The experimental results of LWFS indicate that the stress-strain relationship and the compressive strength are strongly influenced by cement contents rather than intial water contents of the edged soils. In this paper, the normalizing scheme considering the ratio of initial water contents, cement contents, and air foam contents has been proposed to evaluate the relationship between compressive strength of LWFS and a normalized factor.

  • Stabilization of clayey soil has been studied from past to present by mixing different additives to the soil to increase its strength and durability. In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in stabilization of soils with natural pozzolans. Despite this, very few studies have investigated the impact of pozzolanic additives under freeze-thaw cycling. This paper presents the results of an experimental research study on the durability behavior of clayey soils treated with lime and perlite. For this purpose, soil was stabilized with 6% lime content by weight of dry soil (optimum lime ratio of the the soil), perlite was mixed with it in 0%, 5%, 10%, 20%, 25% and 30% proportions. Test specimens were compacted in the laboratory and cured for 7, 28 and 84 days, after which they were tested for unconfined compression tests. In addition to this, they were subjected to 12 closed system freeze-thaw cycles after curing for 28 days. The results show that the addition of perlite as a pozzolanic additive to lime stabilized soil improves the strength and durability. Unconfined compressive strength increases with increased perlite content. The findings indicate that using natural pozzolan which is cheaper than lime, has positive effect in strength and durability of soils and can result cost reduction of stabilization.

  • In order to expand agricultural lands in the western and southern coasts of Korean Peninsula, coarse soils excavated from hillsides have been used as fill materials for reclamation. In order to tackle with the problems and to confirm availability, research on soil improvement involve mixing cement to the fine wet soils. Required undrained shear strength(c$\sub$u/) for fill material was analyzed to be 0.34∼1.2kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$. It has been known that when cement is added to high water content marine clay, its unconfined compression strength increased to 2kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$. Consolidation results show that pre-consolidation pressure increased to 1.8kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 3.4kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ with the addition of 3% and 5% of cement respectively. This result shows that low-height embankments could be constructed without significant compression. Since the effectiveness of improvement may be different site by site, the mix design for each site is necessary in order to optimize it. The process is first to determine aimed shear strength and then optimum mix ratio of cement after carrying out a series of tests.

The purpose of this paper is to compare stabilinzing capability of oyster shell binder and cement binder with treated soils. For this, a series of compressive laboratory tests were peformed to evaluate strength characteristics of treated soils by both oyster shell binder and cement binder with varing water content of dredged soils, different mixing rates of binder and curing days. Based on test results, eco-friendly binder manufactured by oyster shells showed more stabilizing capacity than cement binder and is estimated as good resource materials for soft soil improvements.

  • Low carbon energy demand in South Korea is increasing, hence leading to an increasing usage of wood pellets and the amount of its combustion by-product called wood pellet fly ash (WA). In an effort to develop recycling technology, this research investigates the use of WA as a new sustainable binder for backfill soil materials. The influence of WA on weathered granite soils (WS) is investigated by mixing 5%, 15%, and 25% of WA dosage, compacted at optimum moisture content, then cured for 3, 7, 14, and 28 days. After curing, the compacted specimens were investigated through unconfined compressive tests, pH tests, total suction tests, and microstructural analysis. The findings suggest that the higher the dosage rate, the higher strength and modulus. Additionally, the alkali ions of WA aid in the cementation of WS particles, and newly cementitious minerals are confirmed after 28 curing days. The refinement of pore microstructures led to a denser WS matrix and stiffness improvements. The results validate the binding potential of wood pellet fly ash on weathered granite soils in terms of strength, modulus, and microstructures.

  • Oxides of nitrogen play important roles in atmospheric chemistry. Soil has been recognized as a major natural source of NO, and its emission depends on soil parameters such as soil nitrogen availability, soil moisture and temperature. It is necessary to understand effects of these controlling parameters on soil NO emission. In order to understand soil moisture effects on NO emission, variations of NO concentration and existence of its equilibrium concentration were observed from ammonium fertilized Japanese upland soil prepared for different soil moisture conditions. The closed chamber technique was employed for this study. The significant increases in NO with soil moisture were found. Maximum was occurred at sample ID4 (55% of water-filled pore space (WFPS)), but it decreased as soil moisture increased. No significant NO concentration was emitted from soil sample without fertilizer, but there was significant NO in fertilized soil samples. The magnitudes of NO from soil increased with time and reached at steady state within ten minutes approximately. These results suggest that nitrogen input from fertilizer takes charge in the first step of sharp increase in NO emission, and then soil moisture becomes important factor to control NO emission from the soils. NO concentrations from soil were compared to those one-day after the experiment. Results from the comparison analysis suggest that the soil NO flux might have been stimulated by soil disturbances like mixing, and this is much more effective in dry soils rather than in wet soils. It was found that much less NO came out from soils after a day; suggesting that most of NO was released from the soils within a day after fertilizer application during our experiment. The length of NO releasing time span may depend on the amounts of fertilizer applied, soil moisture condition, and other soil physical parameters.

  • In order to investigate stabilization effect and sustainability on As-contaminated farmland soils which were affected the abandoned mine site and stabilized by zerovalent iron(ZVI) and industrial by-products, batch-scale and pilot-scale tests were carried out. In batch tests, ZVI and industrial by-products(blast furnace slag, steel refining slag and oyster shell powder) were used in treatment materials to reduce the As leaching. Industrial by-products were mixed with As-contaminated soils, in the ratio of 1%, 3%, 5% and 7% on the weight base of dried soil. The results of batch-scale tests was shown that the reduction of As concentration was observed in all samples and it was expected that ZVI and steel refining slag were more effective than other treatment materials to stabilize As compounds. In pilot-scale tests, columns were filled with untreated soils and treated soils mixed with ZVI and steel refining slag in the same mixing ratio of 3%. Distilled water was discharged into the columns with the velocity of 0.3 pore volume/day. During the test, pH, EC, Eh and As concentration were measured in the regular term(1pore volume). after six months, pilot-scale tests were retested to investigate sustainability of treatment materials. As a result, It was shown that the leachate from control column was continuously released during the test period and its concentration was greater than $100ug{\cdot}L^{-1}$ which was exceeded the national regulation of water discharged to river or stream ($50ug{\cdot}L^{-1}$). On the other hand, soil treated with ZVI and steel refining slag showed that the concentrations of leachate were lower than national regulation of water discharged to river or stream. Therefore it was expected that ZVI and steel refining slag could be applied to the farmland site as the alternative treatment materials.
