Effect of Mixing Section Resonance Mode on Dynamic Combustion Characteristics in a Swirl-Stabilized Combustor (스월-안정화 연소기에서 혼합기 공진모드가 동적 연소특성에 미치는 영향)

  • Hot-firing tests were performed to experimentally confirm the effect of the eigenmode in the fuel-air mixing section on combustion instability by changing mixing section length, inlet mean velocity, equivalence ratio, and swirler geometry. A premixed gas composed of air and ethylene was supplied to the combustion chamber through an mixing section and an axial swirler. As the mixing section length increased, the inlet velocity perturbation decreased, but the combustion instability increased more. It was found that the resonance frequency of the first longitudinal mode in the mixing section shifted to the third longitudinal mode as the length of the mixing section increased. The results implied that the transition of the resonace frquency by changing the length of the mixing section might cause combustion instability.

  • The main objective of this study was investigation of natural gas flames in a lean premixed swirl-stabilized dump combustor with an attention focused on the effect of the various fuel-air mixing section geometry on the combustion instability characteristics. The multi-channel dynamic pressure transducers were located on the combustor and inlet mixing section region to observe combustion pressure oscillation and difference phase at each dynamic pressure measurement results. Dynamic pressures were also measured to investigate characteristics of combustion at the same time. The combustor and mixing section length was varied in order to have different acoustic resonance characteristics from 800 to 1800 mm in combustor and 470, 550, 870 mm in mixing section. We observed two dominant instability frequencies in this study. Lower frequencies were obtained at lower equivalence ratio region and it was associated with a fundamental longitudinal mode of combustor length. Higher frequencies were observed in higher equivalence ratio conditions. It was related to secondary longitudinal mode of coupled with the combustor and mixing section. In this instability characteristics, pressure oscillation of mixing section part was larger than pressure oscillation of combustor. As a result, combustion instability was strongly affected by acoustic characteristics of combustor and mixing section geometry.

  • The main objective of this study was investigation of combustion instability characteristics in a lean partially premixed gas turbine dump combustor. Dynamic pressure transducers were located on combustor and inlet section to observe combustion pressure oscillation and difference at each measurement places. Also flame shape and $CH^*$ chemiluminescence were measured using a high speed ICCD camera. The combustor length was varied in order to have different acoustic characteristics from 800 to 1090 mm. The first section of this paper shows the stability map in model gas turbine combustor. And the effects of combustor length, mixture velocity in the mixing section and equivalence ratio were studied by the pressure perturbation and heat release oscillation. Also, the instability frequency and mode analysis were studied in last two sections. We observed two dominant instability frequencies in this study. Lower frequencies were obtained at lower equivalence ratio region and it was associated with a fundamental longitudinal mode of combustor length. Higher frequencies were observed in higher equivalence ratio conditions. It was related to secondary longitudinal mode of combustor and mixing section.   • The fuel and oxidizer mixing process in the shock tube driven section is simulated numerically. The boundary condition is set based on an shock tube experimental condition. The objective is to predict the gas mixing time for experiments. In the experiment, the amount of fuel to be injected is determined in advance. Then, according to duration of fuel injection, 5 cases with the same fuel mass but different fuel mass flow rate are simulated. After fuel is injected into the driven section, the fuel and air will be mixed with each other through convection and diffusion processes. The mixing time is predicted numerically for experiments.

  • The quality of chaotic mixing in square cavity flow was studied numerically by CFD simulation and particle tracking technique. The chaotic mixing was generated by using time-periodic electro-osmotic flow. Finite Volume Method (FVM) was employed to get the stretching and folding field in cavity domain. With adjusting the initial condition of concentration distribution, the best values of modulation period and Peclet number which gave us good mixing performance was determined precisely. From $Poicar{\acute{e}}section$and Lyapunov exponents for characteristic trajectories we find that mixing performance also depends on modulation period. The higher value of modulation period, the better mixing performance wag achieved in this case. Furthermore, the results for tracking particle trajectories were also compared between using of Bilinear Interpolation and Higher-order scheme. The values of modulation period for obtaining best mixing effect were matched between using FVM and particle tracking techniques.

  • The quality of chaotic mixing in three-dimensional micro channel flow has been numerically studied using Fractional-step method (FSM) and particle tracking techniques such as $Poincar{\acute{e}}$ section and Lyapunov exponents. The flow was driven by pressure distribution and the chaotic mixing was generated by applying alternating current to electrodes embedded on the bottom wall at a first half period and on the top wall at a second half period. The equations governing the velocity and concentration distributions were solved using FSM based on Finite Volume approach. Results showed that the mixing quality depended significantly on the modulation period. The modulation period for the best mixing performance was determined based on the mixing index for various initial conditions of concentration distribution. The optimal values of modulation period obtained by the particle tracking techniques were compared with those from the solution of concentration distribution equation using FSM and CFX software and the comparison showed their good match.

  • This study was carried out to re-use the post-harvest substrate of Pleurotus pulmonarius. In this study, we used two mixing ratio. First, a mixing ratio is developed by Gangwon Province Agriculturl Research and Extension Services[Poplar sawdust(10)+Cottonseed hull(50)+Cottonseed mal(20)+Beet pulp(20)]. Second, mixing ratio is developed by farmers[Poplar sawdust(60)+Cottonseed hull(10)+Cottonseed mal(10)+Beet pulp(20)]. First mixing ratio research results, Hosan was no difference in the yield by 30%, Yield of the Hwasan has increased by 20%. Second mixing ratio research results, Hosan was no difference in the yield by 20%. However, Hwasan has decreased.

  • An ejector is a kind of pump which is using pressure energy of high pressure fluid. This study aims to investigate performance influencing according to change the ejector mixing section shape using CFD simulation by Finite Volume Method. Optimum conditions were suggested 3 kind of variable such as nozzle diameter, nozzle length, distance from nozzle tip to the diffuser inlet. The results, It was confirmed that the diameter of the nozzle was the greatest effect in performance of the ejector. The diameter of the nozzle get smaller, mixing ratio was increased. On the other hand, nozzle length, distance from nozzle tip to the diffuser inlet had little effect on performance. It was proposed specific Mixing section, Nozzel diameter 23.8mm using the Artificial Neural Network.

  • Heat pipes with binary mixture fabricated and tested for applications where condenser temperature is in a range of $10^{\circ}C$ to $130^{\circ}C$. The pipe materials 8.0 mm O.D. cupper tube and the working fluids are ethanol-water mixtures. The total length of test of the heat pipe was 1710mm in which evaporator section was 1570mm, adiabatic section was 50mm and condenser section was 90mm. Mixing ratios of ethanol and water could be variable in mole fraction. Temperature of condenser section was $10^{\circ}C$, $80^{\circ}C$ and $130^{\circ}C$. Heat pipe performance experimental study was accomplished with change of mixing ratio in these temperatures. The fill charge ratio was 20% of the heat pipe volume. Wick structure was woven-wire and method of experimental work was that thermal load was increased 20W step until the heat pipe wall temperature reached at $150^{\circ}C$. Results were following: At coolant $10^{\circ}C$ and $130^{\circ}C$, mixing ratio that have beat thermal performance was 0.8M+ and at coolant $80^{\circ}C$, was 0.3 ${\sim}$ 0.5 M+.
