Pure tantalum powder has been produced by combining Na as a reducing agent, $K_2$TaF$_{7}$ as feed material, KCl and KF as a diluent in a stainless steel (SUS) bomb, using the method of metallothermic reduction. And we examined various types of after-treatment that affect the high purification of powder. A significant amount of impurities contained in recovered powder was removed in various conditions of acid washing. In particular, 20% (HCl + HNO$_3$) was effective in removing heavy metal impurities such as Fe, Cr and Ni, 8% H$_2$SO$_4$ + 8% $Al_2$(SO$_4$)$_3$ in removing fluorides such as K and F from non-reactive feed material, and 2% $H_2O$$_2$ + 1 % HF in removing oxides that formed during reaction. Significant amounts of oxygen and part of light metal impurities could be removed through deoxidation and heat treatment process. On the other hand, because it is difficult to remove completely heavy metal impurities such as Fe, Cr, and Ni through acid washing or heat treatment process if their contents are too high, it is considered desirable to inhibit these impurities from being mixed during the reduction process as much as possible.

Amorphous vanadium titanates (aVTOs) are examined for use as a negative electrode in lithium-ion batteries. These amorphous mixed oxides are synthesized in nanosized particles (<100 nm) and flocculated to form secondary particles. The $V^{5+}$ ions in aVTO are found to occupy tetrahedral sites, whereas the $Ti^{4+}$ ions show fivefold coordination. Both are uniformly dispersed at the atomic scale in the amorphous oxide matrix, which has abundant structural defects. The first reversible capacity of an aVTO electrode ($295mAhg^{-1}$) is larger than that observed for a physically mixed electrode (1:2 $aV_2O_5$ | $aTiO_2$, $245mAhg^{-1}$). The discrepancy seems to be due to the unique four-coordinated $V^{5+}$ ions in aVTO, which either are more electron-accepting or generate more structural defects that serve as $Li^+$ storage sites. Coin-type Li/aVTO cells show a large irreversible capacity in the first cycle. When they are prepared under nitrogen (aVTO-N), the population of surface hydroxyl groups is greatly reduced. These groups irreversibly produce highly resistive inorganic compounds (LiOH and $Li_2O$), leading to increased irreversible capacity and electrode resistance. As a result, the material prepared under nitrogen shows higher Coulombic efficiency and rate capability.

To test the potential effects of extracellular electron shuttles (EES) on the rate and extent of heavy metal release from contaminated soils during microbial iron reduction, we created anaerobic batch systems with anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS) as a surrogate of EES, and with contaminated soils as mixed iron (hydr)oxides and microbial sources. Two types of soils were tested: Zn-contaminated soil A and As/Pb-contaminated soil B. In soil A, the rate of iron reduction was fastest in the presence of AQDS and > 3500 mg/L of total Fe(II) was produced within 2 d. This suggests that indigenous microorganisms can utilize AQDS as EES to stimulate iron reduction. In the incubations with soil B, the rate and extent of iron reduction did not increase in the presence of AQDS likely because of the low pH (< 5.5). In addition, less than 2000 mg/L of total Fe(II) was produced in soil B within 52 d suggesting that iron reduction by subsurface microorganisms in soil B was not as effective as that in soil A. Relatively high amount of As (~500 mg/L) was released to the aqueous phase during microbial iron reduction in soil B. The release of As might be due to the reduction of As-associated iron (hydr)oxides and/or direct enzymatic reduction of As(V) to As(III) by As-reducing microorganisms. However, given that Pb in liquid phase was < 0.3 mg/L for the entire experiment, the microbial reduction As(V) to As(III) by As-reducing microorganisms has most likely occurred in this system. This study suggests that heavy metal release from contaminated soils can be strongly controlled by subsurface microorganisms, soil pH, presence of EES, and/or nature of heavy metals.
Introduction : Recently, water and environmental pollution becomes serious social problem and high technology makes this pollution accelerate. Hydrogen sulfide, the main subject of our research, is one of the most dangerous air pollutant like SO$_x$ and NO$_x$. The major contaminant in coal gasification is H$_2$S, which is very toxic, hazardous and extremely corrosive. Therefore, control of hydrogen sulfide to a safe level is essential. Although commercial desulfurization process called liquid scrubbing is effective for removal of H$_2$S, it has drawbacks, the loss of sensible heat of the gas and costly wastewater treatment. Many investigations are carried out about high-temperature removal ol H$_2$S in hot coal-derived gas using metal oxide or mixed metal qxide sorbents. It was reported that ZnO was very effective sorbent for H2S removal, but it has big flaw to vaporize elemental zinc above 600\ulcorner \ulcorner As alternative, metal oxides such as CaO, $Fe_2O_3$, TiO$_2$ and CuO were added to ZnO. Especially, different results are reported for $Fe_2O_3$ additive. Tamhankar et al. reported SiO$_2$ with 45 wt% $Fe_2O_3$ sorbent is favorable for removal of H$_2$S and regeneration.
New Schiff base derivatives of organoheterobimetallic-${\mu}$-oxoisopropoxide $[Bu_2SnO_2Ti_2(OPr^i)_6]$ have been synthesized by the thermal condensation ${\mu}$-oxoisopropoxide compound with Schiff bases in different molar ratios (1:1-1:4) yielded the compounds of the type $[Bu_2SnO_2Ti_2(OPr^i)_{6-n}(SB)_n]$ (where n is 1-4 and SB=Schiff base anion) respectively. The ${\mu}$-oxoisopropoxide derivatives have been characterized by elemental, spectral analysis (IR, $^1H$, $^{13}C$, $^{119}Sn$ NMR) and molecular weight measurement The studies reveal that the derivative compounds show monomeric nature. Further these are found less susceptible to hydrolysis as compared to parent compound and may prove excellent precursors for the mixed metal oxides.
Gas identification techniques using pattern recognition methods were developed from four micro-electronic gas sensors for noxious gas mixture analysis. The target gases for the air quality monitoring inside vehicles were two exhaust gases, carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), and two odor gases, ammonia (NH3) and formaldehyde (HCHO). Four MEMS gas sensors with sensing materials of Pd-SnO2 for CO, In2O3 for NOX, Ru-WO3 for NH3, and hybridized SnO2-ZnO material for HCHO were fabricated. In six binary mixed gas systems with oxidizing and reducing gases, the gas sensing behaviors and the sensor responses of these methods were examined for the discrimination of gas species. The gas sensitivity data was extracted and their patterns were determined using principal component analysis (PCA) techniques. The PCA plot results showed good separation among the mixed gas systems, suggesting that the gas mixture tests for noxious gases and their mixtures could be well classified and discriminated changes.
In this study, the adsorption efficiency of mixed heavy metals in aqueous solution was investigated using steel slag. Moreover, heavy-metal stabilization treatment of contaminated marine sediment was achieved using steel slag as stabilizing agents. Heavy metal adsorption was characterized using Freundlich and Langmuir equations. The equilibrium adsorption data were fitted well to the Langmuir model in steel slag. The adsorption uptake of heavy metals were higher in the order of $Pb^{2+}$ > $Cd^{2+}$ > $Cu^{2+}$ > $Zn^{2+}$ > $Ni^{2+}$. The steel slage was applied for a wet-curing duration of 150 days. From the sequential extraction results, the exchangeable, carbonate, and oxides fractions of Ni, Zn, Cu, Pb, and Cd in sediment decreased by 13.0%, 6.0%, 1.3%, 17.0%, and 50.0%, respectively.

An anti-aging compound ethyl (4-(2,3-dihydro-1H-indene-5-carboxyamido) benzoate) rapidly crystallizes in emulsion systems, and a flavonoid 3,5,7-trihydroxy-4'-methoxy-8-prenylflavone bearing a whitening function causes coloration of cosmetic compounds when mixed with metal oxides. In this study, an electrospray method was used to encapsulate water-insoluble bioactive compounds in polymeric microparticles. Poly (methyl methacrylate) and polycaprolactone were used to encapsulate ethyl (4-(2,3-dihydro-1H-indene-5-carboxyamido) benzoate) and 3,5,7-trihydroxy-4'-methoxy-8-prenylflavone, respectively. It was found that polymer concentration, the structure of electrospray nozzle, and compatibility between polymers and bioactive compounds were important factors in the preparation of the particles. Polycaprolactone particles encapsulating 3,5,7-trihydroxy-4'-methoxy-8-prenylflavone was effective in preventing coloration of a cosmetic compound when mixed with metal oxides.
In this study, Ti added Mn-Cu mixed oxide catalysts were prepared by a co-precipitation method and used for the low temperature (< $200^{\circ}C$) selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx with $NH_3$. Physicochemical properties of these catalysts were characterized by BET, XRD, XPS, and TPD. Mn-Cu mixed oxide catalysts were found to be amorphous with a large surface and they showed high SCR activity. Experimental results showed that the addition of $TiO_2$ to Mn-Cu oxide enhanced the SCR activity and $N_2$ selectivity. Ti addition led to the chemically adsorbed oxygen species that promoted the oxidation of NO to $NO_2$ and increased the number of $NH_3$ adsorbed-sites such as $Mn^{3+}$.
The production of biodiesel by transesterification of soybean oil was performed on $MoO_3$, $SnO_2$ and $CeO_2$ mixed oxides. The catalysts were characterized using XRD and $NH_3$-TPD. $MoO_3$ showed the highest activity among the three metal oxides. When 7 wt% of catalysts was introduced into the reactants, the highest activity was obtained and the water added to reactant decreased the catalytic activity. $MoO_3$ and $SnO_2$ mixed with 50:50 showed the highest activity and $CeO_2$ added with 20% on the $MoO_3-SnO_2$ mixed oxide also showed the highest activity. The catalytic activity showed to have a good relationship with the amount of acid site of catalysts. When the waste soybean oil was used as a reactant, the conversion was decreased about 30%.
