  • A gain-scheduled autopilot design for a bank-to-turn (BTT) missile is developed by using the Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) optimization technique and a state-space lineal interpolation method. The missile dynamics are brought to a quasilinear parameter varying (quasi-LPV) form. Robust linear control design method is used to obtain state feedback controllers for the LPV systems with exogenous disturbances at the frozen values of the scheduling parameters. Two gam-scheduled controllers for the pitch axis and the yaw/roll axis are constructed by linearly interpolating the robust state-feedback gains. The designed controller is applied to a nonlinear six-degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) simulations.

  • Side jet effect on the aerodynamic characteristics of a missile was investigated using experimental and computational methods. A couple of side jets were injected toward outward downstream at mid point of missile body. Cold air jet was used in the wind tunnel test, and cold and hot jet were used in the computation. Wind tunnel test was carried out with jet and without jet, and calculation was performed for three cases ; no jet, cold air jet, and hot mixture gas jet. From the comparison of measured and calculated data for all cases, two points could be deduced. Firstly, side jet made static stability to be unstable by increasing body normal force near the side jet exit and by decreasing tail normal force. Secondly, hot mixture gas had more significant effect on the static stability of a missile-type body than cold air jet.

  • In this paper, a horizontal LOS(line of sight) rate estimator for conventional sea skimming ASM(anti-ship missile) is proposed. A LOS rate dynamics model in 2 axis gimbal system and in homing geometry is derived. And a new LOS rate estimator is proposed by applying a Kalman filter theory to the LOS rate dynamics model. The proposed filter can estimate LOS rates with taking roll motions into account. Simulation results show the proposed filter produces smaller estimation errors than a conventional method.

  • Computational approaches for the aerodynamic design and optimization are introduced. In this paper the aerodynamic design methods and applications, which have been applied to various aerospace vehicles at Konkuk University, are introduced. It is shown that system approximation technique reduces computational cost for CFD analysis and improves efficiency for the design optimization process.

  • Nonlinear flow-induced vibration characteristics of a generic missile wing (or control surface) are investigated in this study. The wing model has freeplay structural nonlinearity at its pitch axis. Nonlinear aerodynamic flows with unsteady shock waves are considered in the transonic flow region. To practically consider the effects of freeplay structural nonlinearity, the fictitious mass method (FMM) is applied to structural vibration analysis based on a finite element method (FEM). A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique is used for computing the nonlinear unsteady aerodynamics of all-movable wings. The aerodynamic analysis is based on the efficient transonic small-disturbance aerodynamic equations of motion using the potential-flow theory. To solve the nonlinear aeroelastic governing equations including the freeplay effect, a modal-based computational structural dynamic (CSD) analysis technique based on fictitious mass method (FMM) is used in time-domain. In addition, CSD and unsteady CFD techniques are simultaneously coupled to give accurate computational results. Various aeroelastic computations have been performed for a generic missile wing model. Linear and nonlinear aeroelastic computations have been conducted and the characteristics of flow-induced vibration are introduced.

  • A recent air defense missile system(ADMS) is required to have a capability to intercept super-high speed targets such as tactical ballistic missiles(TBMs) by performing engagement control efficiently. The air defense missile system should be ready to engage the TBMs as soon as the ADMS detects TBMs because falling velocity of TBM is very high and remaining time interval to engage TBM is very short. As a result, the ADMS has to predict the trajectories of TBMs accurately with estimated states of dynamics to generate predicted intercept point(PIP). In addition, it is needed to engage TBMs accurately via transmitting the obtained PIP data to the corresponding intercept missiles. In this paper, an analysis about the relationship between ballistic coefficient and PIP accuracy which is depending on geodetic height of the first detection of TBM is included and an issue about effective engagement control for the TBM is considered.

  • Hanger in a rail-launched missile protrudes in general and causes to increase significant drag force. One method to avoid the significant increase of drag force is to apply fairings on the hanger. In this paper, sloping shaped fairing parameters of height, width, and length are optimized to minimize the drag force under subsonic speed region by examining three configurations of fairings : front-fairing only, rear-faring only, and the both front and rear fairing. We use Latin Hypercube Sampling method to determine the experimental points, and computational fluid dynamics with incompressible RANS solver was applied to acquire the data at sampling points. Then, we construct a meta model by kriging method. We find the best choice among three configurations examined : both front and rear fairing reduce the drag force by 63 % without the constraint of fairing mass, and front fairing reduced the drag force by 52 % with the constraint of hanger mass.

  • We design a homing guidance law based on the proportional navigation for the fast-rolling, single-axis control missiles and analyse the misdistance of the designed guidance system. The guidance law includes a compensation scheme which compensates for the phase-shift between the commanded and achieved acceleration which is peculiar to the fast rolling airframe with single-axis control. In the error analysis of the guidance system, we calculate the misdistance with respect to the target maneuver on the 3-dimensional space via direct simulations. Also, we conduct adjoint simulation on the 2-dimensional plane in case that phase-shift is perfectly compensated. Finally we approximate the linear time-varying dynamics of the missile with autopilot to a linear time-invarient system, and as a result we can find the misdistance as a closed-form.

  • The side jet effects between jet flow and free-stream on a missile body were investigated by experimentally and numerically for modeling aerodynamic coefficients in pitch plane. K-factors for normal force and pitching moment were introduced to estimate the side jet effects. The main parameters of the jet interaction phenomena were angle of attack, jet pressure ratio, Mach number and jet bank angle. The K-factors for normal force coefficient and pitching moment coefficients in pitch plane were analysed.

  • The nonlinear characteristics for the hinge of a deployable missile control fin are investigated experimentally. The nonlinearity is caused by a worn or loose hinge and manufacturing tolerance and cannot be eliminated completely. The structural nonlinearity has an effect on the static and dynamic characteristics of the control fin. Therefore, it is necessary to establish the accurate nonlinear model for the hinge of the control fin. In the present study the existence of nonlinearities in the hinge is confirmed from the frequency response experiments such as tip random excitation and base sine sweep. Using the system identification method, especially, “Force-State Mapping Technique”, the types of nonlinearities are identified and the nonlinear hinge model of the control fin is established.
