  • A mirror cam mechanism a kind of conjugate cam mechanism consists of two cams, two rollers, and two links. Since profiles of two mirror cam are identical, a simultaneous machining of two cams is achievable. Some machining errors on cam profiles do not result in the internal acting force, which often causes problems in high speed cam mechanism between two links. Also, since angular accelerations of two links are same, the internal acting force by the difference of the angular accelerations does not occur in the mechanism. Thus the mirror cam mechanism is very useful in high speed machinery. This paper studies a design method as well as a machining method, and develops an exclusive CAD/CAM software for mirror cam profiles. The developed CAD/CAM software is applied to a typical mirror cam mechanism and a mock-up equipment is built in order to test the machinism mirror cm. Experimental investigations show that the contact between cam surface and roller surface according to cam rotation agrees well with the simulation on the developed CAD/CAM software.

  • The support structure of an optical mirror system is the one of the important design elements because the one affects the optical aberrations of the mirror surface. In this paper, Lagrange equation of the moving body of the fast steering mirror system(FSM) has been formulated to use with optimization design. Major goals for optimization are to assign the reasonably flexible stiffness to the structure and to enhance the first natural frequency of the mirror and support system in aid of more affordable control bandwidth for the FSM. Pursuing these purposes with the proposed method, the finite element analysis(FEA), optimization technique and the Zernike polynomial estimation are used for the design effects. It is concluded that the proposed approach for design well guides toward the desired design goals with regards to both structural and optical performances.

  • Optimization of a 30 cm lightweight mirror was proposed with the best optical performance under various loads of gravity and thermal loads with proper boundary conditions. A pattern for a lightweight mirror was generated based on the best optical performance combined with ease of manufacturing for proper design parameters of physical properties of face sheet, back sheet, rib, and web. Evaluation of the optical performances of a telescope mirror was obtained by using the finite element analysis program, NX I-DEAS. Surface errors, individual aberration terms, such as piston, tilts, focus and other aberrations were calculated by using Zernike polynomials. The proposed telescope mirror meets well the opto-mechanical design consideration of RMS surface error less than 16 nm.

  • A null lens system of autostigmatic type, consisting of two mirrors, is designed for testing a large aspherical mirror. The system is theoretically analyzed to determine the limitation of measurement accuracy according to the manufacturing and alignment errors. We confirmed that irregularity of the null lens surface is the principal factor among tolerances in limiting measurement accuracy. Consequently, we can predict that measurement accuracy will be from 5λ/100 to 4λ/1000 according to the amount of this irregularity. That is, we can present the limitation of possible measurement accuracy with actual alignment and manufacturing errors.

  • By comparing the measured optical reflection spectra with calculated one by the transfer-matrix method (TMM) in epitaxial wafers for vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs), we have estimated the systematic thickness errors in a simple and nondestructive way. The experimentally confirmed technique is based on the finding that the shape of the reflection spectra depends mainly on a newly defined single parameter, the effective error in the n-mirror layers, and the thickness error in the active cavity simply shifts the Fabry-Perot resonance wavelength. Also shown is that the proposed method is reliable when the relative standard deviation of the random thickness errors is less than 0.005. Because reflection spectra are routinely measured, we can easily estimate the thickness errors nondestructively with high spatial resolution.

  • The use of segmented mirrors is one of the ways to make the primary mirror of a spaceborne satellite larger, where several small mirrors are combined into a large monolithic mirror. To align multiple segmented mirrors as one large mirror, there must be no discontinuity in the x, y-axis (tilt) and axial alignment error (piston) between adjacent mirrors. When the tilt and piston are removed, we can collect the light in one direction and get an expected clear image. Therefore, we need a precise wavefront sensor that can measure the alignment error of the segmented mirrors in nm scale. The tilt error can be easily detected by the point spread image of the segmented mirrors, while the piston error is hard to detect because of the absence of apparent features, but makes a downgraded image. In this paper we used an optical testing interferometer such as a Fizeau interferometer, which has various advantages when aligning the segmented mirror on the ground, and focused on measuring the axial displacement error of a segmented mirror as the basic research of measuring the piston errors between adjacent mirrors. First, we calculated the relationship between the axial displacement error of the segmented mirror and the surface defocus error of the interferometer and verified the calculated formula through experiments. Using the experimental results, we analyzed the measurement uncertainty and obtained the limitation of the Fizeau interferometer in detecting axial displacement errors.

  • The projectors using liquid crystal display(LCD) have faults such as low optical efficiency, low brightness and even heat generation. To solve these problems reflective-type spatial light modulators based on MEMS (Microelectromechanical Systems) technology have emerged. Digital Micromirror DeviceTM(DMDTM), which was already developed by Texas Instruments Inc., and Thin-film Micromirror ArrayTM(TMATM), which has been recently developed by Daewoo Electronics Co., are the representative examples. The display using TMATM has particularly much higher optical efficiency than other projectors. But the micromirrors manufactured by semiconductor processes have inevitable distortion because of the limitations of the manufacturing processes, so that the distortions of their surfaces have great influence on the optical efficiency of the projector. This study investigated the effects of mirror flatness on the optical performance, including the optical efficiency, of the TMATM projector. That is to say, as a part of the efforts to enhance the performance of the TMATM projector, how much influence the form errors of a micromirror surface exert on the optical efficiency and the modulation of gray scale of the projector were analyzed through a pertinent modeling and simulations.

  • In the present research, the optical measurement error induced by vibration of the optical measurement tower for large mirrors at KRISS (Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science) is investigated. The vibrations of the tower structure, the interferometer, and the null lens are measured while the surface errors of the 600-mm-diameter on-axis aspheric mirror are measuring, under various environmental conditions. The increase of surface error induced by alignment error with respect to vibration is analyzed. As a result, the interferometer and the null lens, which are located on the top of the tower, are highly sensitive to vibration. Additionally, the surface error of the mirror is strongly increased when the vibration directions of the interferometer and the null lens are different. To reduce the alignment error and the surface error induced by vibration, the tower structure should be improved, to be insensitive to low-frequency vibration. Alternatively, optical measuring under stable conditions by vibration monitoring can improve the reliability of the surface error measurement.
