  • Oceanographic survey data were analyzed to understand the characteristics of a warm eddy observed in the Ulleung Basin in July 2005. The temperature distribution at 200 db and vertical sections provided evidence of the warm eddy in the Ulleung Basin (UWE05). Based on the 5$^{\circ}C$ isothermal line on 200 db temperature, the major axis was 160 km from southwest to northeast, and the minor axis was 80 km from southeast to northwest. The homogeneous layer in the thermocline of UWE05 had mean values of 10.40$^{\circ}C$ potential temperature, 34.35 psu salinity, and 26.37 kg/m$^3$ potential density (${\sigma}_{\theta}$) and provided evidence that UWE05 also existed during the winter of 2004-2005. A warm streamer initially flowed along the circumference of UWE05 and mixed with the upper central water. Two northward current cores were found on the western side of the measured current section at the central latitude of UWE05. One was the East Korean Warm Current (EKWC) and the other was the main stream of the western part of UWE05. Geostrophic transport of the upper layer (from the surface to the isopycnal surface of 26.9 ${\sigma}_{\theta}$) was approximately 2.5 Sv in the eastern side of UWE05. However, the measured transport was twice as large as the geostrophic transport. Mass conservation of geostrophic transport was well satisfied in the upper layer. The direct current measurements and geostrophic transport analysis showed that the EKWC meandered around UWE05.

  • Information technology devices, such as cellular phones, MP3s and so on, due to restrictions of space, require thin and small micro-speakers to generate sound. The reduction of the size of micro-speakers has resulted in the decrease of sound quality, due to such factors as frequency range and sound pressure level. In this study, the acoustical properties of oval microspeakers has been studied as a function of pattern shape on the diaphragm. The other conditions of micro-speakers, except for the pattern, was not changed. When the pattern is present on the diaphragm and the shape of pattern was a whirlwind, the resonance frequency was reduced due to the decrease of tensile strength of diaphragm. The patterns presented in the semi-minor axis of diaphragm did not effect a change of resonance frequency. However, increasing the number of patterns in the semimajor axis of diaphragm became a reason for the decrease of resonance frequency on edge side. When the depth of pattern on edge side was increased, the resonance frequency was decreased due to reduction of geometrical stiffness. If the height of edge and dome were increased, the resonance frequency and geometrical stiffness rapidly increased. After reaching the maximum values, they began to decrease with the continuous increase of height.

  • In this paper, we present an image retrieval system using shape features. The preprocessing to gain shape feature includes edge extraction using chain code. The shape features consist of center of mass, standard deviation, ratio of major axis and minor axis length. The similarity is estimated as comparing the features of query image with the features of images in database. Thus, the candidates of images are retrieved according to the order of similarity. The result of an experimentation is dullness for scale, rotation and translation. We evaluate the performance of shape features for image retrieval on a database with over 170 images. The Recall and the Precision is each 0.72 and 0.83 in the result of average experiment. So the proposed method is presented useful method.

  • For multi-stage deep drawing process including ironing operation and biaxial forming in this study, tool developments are achieved, and the developed tool sets are applied to experimental investigations. In process and tool designs, a contact condition between intermediate blank and lower die is considered as the sequential one. In this study, the material used is cold-rolled thin sheet (SPCE) with the initial thickness of 0.4mm. From the experimental approaches, several failures such as tearing, localized thickening and thinning, are observed. To solve these failures, the contact surface on the lower die is modified. As the experimental results by applying the modified lower die, it is investigated that the failures are not occurred, and the excessive deformation behavior due to the thinning and thickening effects are decreased. Furthermore, the thickness distributions on the major axis and the minor axis of each intermediate blank are investigated to be already satisfied the target (ironing) thickness, respectively. By this systematic approach, it is confirmed that the experimental results show good agreements with the designed and required configuration of each deformed and final products.

  • It is important to study using experimental animals for research about stroke. Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI) is avaluable diagnosticmethods for stroke diagnosis. The purpose of this research is to know the Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI) and histopathological characteristics findings after induction of photothrombotic cerebral infarction in rat brain. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were anesthetized, Rose Bengal dye(20 mg/kg) was intravenously injected. The right sensonrimotor cortex of rat brain was exposed to cold light of 7 mm diameter at a position of 1 mm anterior and 3.5 mm lateral to bregma for 20 min. The post-infarction effects were monitored by T1 weighted and T2 weighted images of brain MRI. Histopathological changes were observed after Hematoxylin & Eosin staining. The lesion appeared clearly high signal intensity area on T2 weighted images(the major axis $7.04{\pm}0.11$ mm, the minor axis $3.08{\pm}0.04$ mm) and also H&E staining was same result. In conclusion, MRI was avaluable diagnostic methods for diagnosis and serial changes of stroke.

  • When stress is beyond elastic limit or cracks occur in a reinforced concrete member subjected to axial force and biaxial bending, curvature about each principal axis of uncracked section is influenced by axial force and bending moments about both major and minor principal axes. It is mainly due to the translation and rotation of principal axes of the cross section after cracking. Recently, by considering these effects, a numerical method predicting the behavior of concrete columns subjected to axial force and biaxial bending was proposed. In this study, in order to verify the proposed numerical method and investigate the effects of cracking on the behavior of reinforced concrete columns, a series of tests were carried out for 16 tied reinforced concrete columns with 100×100 mm square and 200×100 mm rectangular sections under various loading conditions. The angle between the direction of eccentricity and the major principal axis of uncracked section were 0, 30, 40° for the square section and 0, 30, 45, 60, 90° for the rectangular section, respectively. A comparison between numerical predictions and test results shows good agreements in ultimate loads, axial force-lateral deflection relations, and lateral deflection trajectories. It is also found, in this limited investigation, that the ACI's moment magnifier method is conservative in both uniaxial and biaxial loading conditions.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the internal nozzle flow and cavitation characteristics numerically in both circular and elliptical nozzles. The program FLUENT 6.2 was used to perform the numerical simulation of the cavitating flow in the nozzles. A comparison was made between the cavitation shapes predicted numerically and those found experimentally in order to validate the numerical solution. This study showed that the cavitation in the circular nozzle had a cylindrical shape that was symmetrical with the nozzle axis. However, the cavitation in the elliptical nozzles had a horseshoe-like shape. In addition, the radial velocity distribution varied between the major and the minor axis planes when the working fluid was flowing into the inlet.

  • This study proposes a new and highly-accurate artificial intelligence model, namely ANN-IP, which combines an interior-point (IP) algorithm and artificial neural network (ANN), to improve the axial compression capacity prediction of elliptical concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns. For this purpose, 145 tests of elliptical CFST columns extracted from the literature are used to develop the ANN-IP model. In this regard, axial compression capacity is considered as a function of the column length, the major axis diameter, the minor axis diameter, the thickness of the steel tube, the yield strength of the steel tube, and the compressive strength of concrete. The performance of the ANN-IP model is compared with the ANN-LM model, which uses the robust Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) algorithm to train the ANN model. The comparative results show that the ANN-IP model obtains more magnificent precision (R2 = 0.983, RMSE = 59.963 kN, a20 - index = 0.979) than the ANN-LM model (R2 = 0.938, RMSE = 116.634 kN, a20 - index = 0.890). Finally, a new Graphical User Interface (GUI) tool is developed to use the ANN-IP model for the practical design. In conclusion, this study reveals that the proposed ANN-IP model can properly predict the axial compression capacity of elliptical CFST columns and eliminate the need for conducting costly experiments to some extent.

  • In laser material processing for high thermal conductivity, the thermal effect of laser beam shape was examined through computer simulations. In this paper, a circular beam with a focal radius of $500{\mu}m$, an elliptical beam with a major axis of 4 mm and a minor axis of 1 mm, and a rotating beam with a focal radius of $500{\mu}m$ and an angular velocity of 5 rad/sec were compared. Simulation results showed that there was no clear difference in the maximum temperature between the circular focus and the elliptical shape, but the heating and cooling rates were different. The simulation result for a laser beam rotating in a circular pattern with a radius of 5 mm showed an asymmetric temperature rise due to the combination of linear and rotational motion. At points where the rotational and linear speeds combined, the temperature gradually rose and reached the maximum temperature; whereas at points where the rotational and linear speeds were attenuated, the temperature tended to gradually decrease after reaching the maximum temperature. Based on the results of this study, the authors expect to be able to optimize laser material processing by designing patterns of laser beams.
