  • In Japan, the municipal solid waste, which amounts to 50 million tons, is generated every year and most of it is incinerated. The bottom and fly ashes are disposed to the registered disposal areas under the provisions of The Waste Disposal and Public Cleaning Law. Especially, as the fly ash from the municipal waste incineration (the primary fly ash) contains heavy metals (lead, zinc, etc) and dioxins, it cannot be disposed directly without decontamination, such as moiling, cementation, chelating and dissolving processes provided in the law. However, these procedures for decontamination, except melting, are not enough for dioxins. Even in case of melting, the fly ash from the process (the secondary fly ash) contains high concentration of heavy metals (e.g., Zn; 1-20%, Pb; 1-10%). For these reasons, Metal Mining Agency of Japan (MMAJ), a governmental organization, started a four-year project to develop the treatment technologies of these fly ashes in 1999. The purpose of the project is to establish the integrated technologies to recover the valuable metals from, and to decontaminate, the primary and secondary fly-ashes in the practical scale by utilizing the existing metallurgical processes and facilities, along with the energy saving and the reduction of the environmental impact.

  • The mining industry of Japan had rapidly grown after the World War II with the economic growth. There existed more than 350 mines all over Japan in the 1960’s. The mines however had been closed one after another under the influence of the world and domestic economic events such as the mining-related pollution in Japan after the middle of the 60’s, the Oil Crisises in 73 and 79 and the Strong Yen in 85 (Fig. 1). • In the beginning of $20^{th}$ century, the coal mining industry had an important role in Japan at which two-thirds of the coal product came from the Kitakyushu-Chikuho District (KCD). As a consequence of mining activities, land-use condition in this district showed notable changes. This paper presented a study of land-use changes in coal mining area by characterizing land-use pattern transition over the last 100 years. In order to carry out the rigorous analysis of land-use, a series of land-use maps over the last 100 years was developed using geographic information systems (GIS). The historic topographic map and another available old data were used to investigate the long-term changes of land-use associated with past mining within the GIS platform. The results showed that the utilization of a series of developed land-use maps successfully indicated the difference of land-use pattern in the KCD before and after the peak of mining activities. The general findings from land-use analysis described that forest and farm lands were lost and turned into abandoned sites in the last 100 years.

  • Text mining techniques provide valuable insights into research information across various fields. In this study, text mining was used to identify research trends in wood science from 2012 to 2022, with a focus on representative journals published in Korea and Japan. Abstracts from Journal of the Korean Wood Science and Technology (JKWST, 785 articles) and Journal of Wood Science (JWS, 812 articles) obtained from the SCOPUS database were analyzed in terms of the word frequency (specifically, term frequency-inverse document frequency) and co-occurrence network analysis. Both journals showed a significant occurrence of words related to the physical and mechanical properties of wood. Furthermore, words related to wood species native to each country and their respective timber industries frequently appeared in both journals. CLT was a common keyword in engineering wood materials in Korea and Japan. In addition, the keywords "MDF," "MUF," and "GFRP" were ranked in the top 50 in Korea. Research on wood anatomy was inferred to be more active in Japan than in Korea. Co-occurrence network analysis showed that words related to the physical and structural characteristics of wood were organically related to wood materials.

  • Data mining has broad applications that reach beyond scholarly and scientific research and provide internet search engine services that are commonly used forms of Text and Data Mining('TDM') of websites. The exceptions and limitations for data mining provide a competitive advantage in the global race for policy innovation because it permits researchers to conduct computational analysis - TDM on any materials to which they have access. For this purpose, Japan and the EU added limitations on copyright to legalize some TDM research through amendments to copyright law, and the U.S. copyright law has allowed data mining by the fair use provision. On the other hand, there are no explicit exceptions and limitations for data mining under the Korean Copyright Act, and there are no cases considering data mining fair use. We review comparatively exceptions and limitations on copyright which will help to encourage AI-related business by using more data smoothly through the mining process and extracting more valuable information.

  • Text data mining ('big data methods') is one of the most widely used approaches during the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, text data mining on Scopus databases or Web of Science (WoS). Text data mining is widely used to collect literature for later bibliometric analysis, and in the end, it becomes a literature review article. Therefore, in this article, we reveal the trend of publication of literature reviews in Scopus journals from Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, and Malaysia. This article describes two essential parts, namely 1) a comparison of international publication trends and subject area of literature review publications, and 2) a comparison of Top 5 for Authors, Affiliation, Source Title, and Collaboration Country.

  • Among non-timber forest products, Tricholoma matsutake is a high value added item. Many countries, including Korea, China, and Japan, are doing research and technology development to increase artificial cultivation and productivity. However, the production of T. matsutake is on the decline due to global warming, abnormal temperatures and pine tree pest problems. Therefore, it is necessary to identify trends in domestic and foreign research on T. matsutake, respond to preemptive research and development to preserve the genetic resources of T. matsutake and increase its productivity. Based on the correlation between keywords in the high frequency keywords, it was observed that microbial clusters of T. matsutake are mainly found in Korea. The main focus in China has been the pharmacology studies on the ingredients of T. matsutake. The main focus in Japan has been on preserving the genetic diversity and species of T. matsutake. Thus, future domestic studies of T. matsutake will require pharmacological studies on the ingredients of T. matsutake and on its genetic diversity and species conservation. In addition, unlike China and Japan, genetic keywords did not appear in Korea at high frequency. Therefore, Korea will have to proceed with research using modern molecular biology techniques.
