  • The optimal greenhouse scales for controlled tomato should be studied because the increase of oil price and labor costs following the shortage of workforce makes greenhouse cultivation hard to gain profits. The purpose of this study is to estimate optimal production scales by greenhouse types for controlled tomato. The translog cost function is estimated based on the production cost survey data. The results can be summarized as follows: First, the average production cost of controlled tomato per kg decreases as the production scale increases. Second, according to the tomatoes farm of standard farming income data of RDA, the minimum production scale is 23 ton. Third, the estimated output of single-span greenhouse considering production scale with minimum average cost is 345 ton and production cost per kg is 1,476 won. The corresponding figures of multi-span greenhouse are 415 ton and 936 won, respectively. The study results can be used as basic materials for efficient decision making of tomato farmhouses and novice farmers. Also, the study shows that multi-span greenhouse should be encouraged to be built, since it requires lower marginal cost than single greenhouse. The results of this paper will help increase the income of farmhouses and cut expenses for the coming years.

  • Handling vast amount of data found in large transactional datasets is an obvious challenge for the conventional data mining algorithms. Addressing this challenge, our paper proposes a parallel approach for proper decomposition of mining problem into sub-problems in order to find frequent patterns from these datasets. The proposed, Pattern Mining for Large Distributed Dataset (PMLDD) approach, ensures minimum dependencies as well as minimum communications among sub-problems. It establishes a linear aggregation of the intermediate results so that it can be adapted to large-scale programming models like MapReduce. In this context, an algorithmic structure for MapReduce programming model is presented. PMLDD guarantees an efficient load balancing among the sub-problems by a specific selection criterion. Further, it optimizes the number of required iterations over the dataset for mining frequent patterns as compared to the existing approaches. Finally, we believe that our approach is scalable enough to handle larger datasets in terms of performance evaluation, and the result analysis justifies all these mentioned concerns.

  • This study estimates the cost function through offshore fishery cost data and analyzed the economies of scale of Korea's offshore fishery. For the estimation of the cost function, translog cost function was used, and the analysis implemented the panel analysis of the panel data. Also, annual economies of scale of the offshore fishery and economies of scale of 14 offshore fisheries in 2015 were analyzed using translog cost function coefficient estimation. The analysis result of economies of scale of Korea's offshore fishery showed that with the exception of 2003, economies of scale exist in all periods of time. However, as it almost reaches the minimum efficient scale, it was revealed that further scale expansion will bring inefficiency. Thus, according to the analysis result, Korea's offshore fishery requires a scale reduction policy rather than scale expansion policy, and this seems to coincide with the current government's fishery reconstruction policy and its practice such as the fishing vessel buyback program. The analysis result of economies of scale of each offshore fishery in 2015 showed that economies of scale of each offshore fishery exists with the exception of five trawl fisheries such as large pair-trawl and large otter trawl and large purse seines. This strongly suggests that the five fisheries and Large Purse Seines with non performing economies of scale need urgent scale reduction and should be the first target for the government's fishery reconstruction policy.

  • In this paper, a novel gray-scale lossless image coder combining context-based minimum mean squared error (MMSE) prediction and entropy coding is proposed. To obtain context of prediction, this paper first defines directional difference according to sharpness of edge and gradients of localities of image data. Classification of 4 directional differences forms“geometry context”model which characterizes two-dimensional general image behaviors such as directional edge region, smooth region or texture. Based on this context model, adaptive DPCM prediction coefficients are calculated in MMSE sense and the prediction is performed. The MMSE method on context-by-context basis is more in accord with minimum entropy condition, which is one of the major objectives of the predictive coding. In entropy coding stage, context modeling method also gives useful performance. To reduce the statistical redundancy of the residual image, many contexts are preset to take full advantage of conditional probability in entropy coding and merged into small number of context in efficient way for complexity reduction. The proposed lossless coding scheme slightly outperforms the CALIC, which is the state-of-the-art, in compression ratio.

  • In this paper, we propose the minimum risk estimator (MRE) and the approximate maximum likelihood estimator (AMLE) of the location and the scale parameters of the two-parameter exponential distribution with Type-II censoring. The MRE's can be derived by minimizing the mean squared error among the class of estimators which include some estimators as special cases. We show that the MRE's are more efficient than the other estimators of the scale and the location parameter in the terms of the mean squared error.

  • Mathematical morphology, theoretical foundation for morphological filter, is very efficient for the analysis of the geometrical characteristics of signals and systems and is used as a predominant tool for smoothing the data with noise. In this study, H/W design of morphological filter is implemented to process the gray scale dilation and the erosion in the same circuit and to choose the maximum and minimum value by a selector, resulting in their education of the complexity of the circuit and an architecture for parallel processing. The structure of morphological filter consists of the structuring-element block, the image data block, the control block, the ADD block, the MIN/MAX block, etc, and is designed on an one-chip for real time operation.

  • Among many other alternative energy resources, small scale hydro power has been brought into attention as a reliable source of energy today, which had been relatively neglected since 1960s. Especially, Kaplan micro-turbine can be applied to various kind of small hydro power plants, such as reservoirs for agriculture purpose, sewage treatment plants and water purification plants. However present low head of Kaplan micro-turbines and small scale hydro turbines, have limitations in the minimum required head and flow rate for efficient operation. This research is to develop modeling analysis for the Kaplan micro-turbine, which can improve economical features of small hydro power plants. The contents and scope of this research are the efficiency improvement of Kaplan micro-turbine.

  • Current low head and small scale hydroturbines have limitations in the minimum required head and flow rate for efficient operation. This study attempts to develop a new concept hydroturbine which is expected to run efficiently even in very low head and small flow rate, so that the limitations on the conventional small scale hydropower could be alleviated and competition with other alternative energy sources in the economic respect could be attained. A small scale catapillar track- hydroturbine was fabricated and the performance test was carried out in a water tunnel over the head range of H = 0.8 m ~ 1.26 m. The peak turbine efficiency was 41.3% at the speed ratio of 0.6, and the turbine loss was mostly due to the friction at the chain drive used for power transmission from the runner to the shafts. This type of turbine is expected to become competitive when some improvement in the power transmission mechanism is made.

  • Many works on energy-efficient cluster event detection schemes have been done considering the energy restriction of sensor networks. The existing cluster event detection schemes transmit only the boundary information of detected cluster event nodes to the base station. However, If the range of the cluster event is widened and the distribution density of sensor nodes is high, the existing cluster event detection schemes need high transmission costs due to the increase of sensor nodes located in the event boundary. In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient cluster event detection scheme using the minimum boundary polygons (MBP) that can compress and summarize the information of event boundary nodes. The proposed scheme represents the boundary information of cluster events using the MBP creation technique in the large scale of sensor network environments. In order to show the superiority of the proposed scheme, we compare it with the existing scheme through the performance evaluation. Simulation results show that our scheme maintains about 92% accuracy and decreases about 80% in energy consumption to detect the cluster event over the existing schemes on average.

  • MR dampers have been proposed for the control of cable vibration of cable-stayed bridge in recent years due to their high performance and low energy consumption. However, the highly nonlinear feature of MR dampers makes them difficult to be designed with efficient semi-active control algorithms. Simulation study has previously been carried out on the cable-MR damper system using a semi-active control algorithm derived based on the universal design curve of dampers and a bilinear mechanical model of the MR damper. This paper aims to verify the effectiveness of the MR damper for mitigating cable vibration through a full-scale experimental test, using the same semi-active control strategy as in the simulation study. A long stay cable fabricated for a real bridge was set-up with the MR damper installed. The cable was excited under both free and forced vibrations. Different test scenarios were considered where the MR damper was tuned as passive damper with minimum or maximum input current, or the input current of the damper was changed according to the proposed semi-active control algorithm. The effectiveness of the MR damper for controlling the cable vibration was assessed through computing the damping ratio of the cable for free vibration and the root mean square value of acceleration of the cable for forced vibration.
