모래지치(Messerschmidia sibirica) 추출물의 항산화성 및 생리활성 (Antioxidant and Physiological Activities of Different Solvent Extracts from Messerschmidia sibirica)

  • Messerschmidia sibirica is a halophyte that grows in high-salinity areas of coastal sand dunes and sandy shores. This study was conducted to investigate the constituents, antioxidant potency, and physiological activities of M. sibirica. Mineral analyses revealed that potassium, calcium, sodium, and magnesium were the most prevalent minerals in M. sibirica leaves and stems. We used 70% ethanol, 80% methanol, and distilled water as solvents to prepare extracts from M. sibirica tissues, with extraction yields of between approximately 19% and 27% being obtained. Among the six types of extract, the leaf ethanol extract (LEE) was characterized by the highest total polyphenol and flavonoid contents, and the antioxidant activities of the LEE were also the highest among the different solvent extracts. In addition, the leaf water extract was shown to have the highest tyrosinase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities, whereas the leaf methanol extract was found to have the highest elastase inhibitory activity. Notably, all leaf extracts were established to have more than 75% β-secretase (BACE1) inhibitory activity at a final concentration of 0.5 mg/mL. These results indicate that leaf extracts of M. sibirica may have beneficial antioxidant properties, and could thus have potential application as functional supplements in food and pharmaceutical products.

Insulin growth factor binding protein-3 enhances dental implant osseointegration against methylglyoxal-induced bone deterioration in a rat model

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of insulin growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) on the inhibition of glucose oxidative stress and promotion of bone formation near the implant site in a rat model of methylglyoxal (MGO)-induced bone loss. Methods: An in vitro study was performed in MC3T3 E1 cells treated with chitosan gold nanoparticles (Ch-GNPs) conjugated with IGFBP-3 cDNA followed by MGO. An in vivo study was conducted in a rat model induced by MGO administration after the insertion of a dental implant coated with IGFBP-3. Results: MGO treatment downregulated molecules involved in osteogenic differentiation and bone formation in MC3T3 E1 cells and influenced the bone mineral density and bone volume of the femur and alveolar bone. In contrast, IGFBP-3 inhibited oxidative stress and inflammation and enhanced osteogenesis in MGO-treated MC3T3 E1 cells. In addition, IGFBP-3 promoted bone formation by reducing inflammatory proteins in MGO-administered rats. The application of Ch-GNPs conjugated with IGFBP-3 as a coating of titanium implants enhanced osteogenesis and the osseointegration of dental implants. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that IGFBP-3 could be applied as a therapeutic component in dental implants to promote the osseointegration of dental implants in patients with diabetes, which affects MGO levels.

Comparative Study of Camel Milk from Different Areas of Xinjiang Province in China

  • Xinjiang province is the main camel feeding area in China with a large square, and camel milk from different areas have different qualities. By now, there are few reports about the quality of camel milk from different areas of Xinjiang province in China. In this study, seven batches of camel milk and one batch of cow milk were collected, and the contents of fat, protein, lactose, total solid, and nonfat milk solid of these milk samples were determined, as well as the contents of lysozyme and vitamin C. All samples were scored and compared by principal component analysis score and comprehensive weighted multi-index score. As the results, camel milk from different areas showed different contents of fat (4.62%-7.02%), protein (3.34%-3.95%), lactose (3.85%-4.79%), total solid (13.59%-17.00%), nonfat milk solid (8.55%-9.73%), vitamin C (12.10-41.25 ㎍/mL), and lysozyme (8.70-22.80 ㎍/mL), as well as different qualities. This variation would help people to know more about quanlity of camel milk in Xinjiang province. Camel milk from Jeminay showed the best quality, and then followed by camel milk from Fukang, Changji, and Fuhai, while cow milk showed the lowest score. Therefore, Jeminay is the most suitable place for grazing camels. Our findings show the different qualities of camel milk in different distribution areas of Xinjiang province, and provide an insight for the evaluation of camel milk. In the present study, only seven components in camel milk were determined, many other factors, such as cfu, mineral, and other vitamins, have not been considered.

염장 죽순을 이용한 요구르트의 제조와 특성 (Preparation and Characteristics of Yogurt Prepared with Salted Bamboo Shoots)

  • 담양 염장 죽순을 첨가한 요구르트를 개발하기 위해 죽순에 함유되어 있는 일반성분을 분석하였고, 관능검사를 통해 최적 발효조건과 죽순첨가 형태를 결정하였다. 죽순은 수분함량이 82.59 %, 단백질 4.56 %, 지질 0.52 %, 회분 0.50 %, 그리고 식이섬유소가 11.72 %(w/w) 함유되어 있었으며, 무기질은 Ca, P, S, Na, Mg, K 순서로 높은 함량을 보였다. 죽순을 첨가하기 위한 요구르트는 ABT-5 미생물을 0.005 % 접종하여 $40\;^{\circ}C$에서 13시간 발효시켰으며, 요구르트 첨가용 죽순은 형태를 달리하여 관능검사를 실시한 결과 $5{\times}5{\times}5\;mm$ 크기로 절단한 죽순을 50 % 설탕에 절임하여 15 %(w/w) 비율로 첨가한 시료의 선호도가 가장 높았다. 이와 같이 제조된 죽순 요구르트는 $4\;^{\circ}C$ 냉장온도에서 15일 동안 저장 중 pH와 산 생성, 젖산균수, 그리고 비피더스균수의 변화가 나타나지 않아 저장성이 우수였다. 따라서 죽순 첨가 호상요구르트는 기호성과 품질 특성이 우수하고 영양학적으로도 훌륭한 상품적 가치가 있을 것으로 판단된다.

Resin infiltrant protects deproteinized dentin against erosive and abrasive wear

  • Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the anti-erosive/abrasive effect of resin infiltration of previous deproteinized dentin. Materials and Methods: Dentin slabs were randomly assigned to 3 groups (n = 15): Control (no deproteinization; no resin infiltrant applied), RI (no deproteinization; resin infiltrant applied), and DRI (deproteinization; resin infiltrant applied). After undergoing the assigned treatment, all slabs were subjected to an in vitro cycling model for 5 days. The specimens were immersed in citric acid (0.05 M, pH = 3.75; 60 seconds; 3 times/day) and brushed (150 strokes). Between the challenges, the specimens were exposed to a remineralizing solution (60 minutes). The morphological alterations were analyzed by mechanical profilometry (㎛) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Data were submitted to one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey tests (p < 0.05). Results: Control and RI groups presented mineral wear and did not significantly differ from each other (p = 0.063). DRI maintained a protective layer preserving the dentin (p < 0.001). After erosive/abrasive cycles, it was observed that in group RI, only 25% of the slabs partially evidenced the presence of the infiltrating, while, in the DRI group, 80% of the slabs presented the treated surface entirely covered by a resin-component layer protecting the dentin surface as observed in SEM images. Conclusions: The removal of the organic content allows the resin infiltrant to efficiently protect the dentin surface against erosive/abrasive lesions.

Physicochemical Properties of Restructured Black Goat Jerky with Various Types of Ultra-Ground Seaweed Powders

  • This study investigated the effects of ultra-ground seaweed powders (USP) on the physicochemical properties (proximate composition, mineral contents, pH, color, shear force, sensory evaluation, electronic nose, and electronic tongue) of restructured black goat jerky. Restructured black goat jerky was prepared using three different treatments, i.e., 3% (w/w) each of ultra-ground sea tangle (ST; Undaria pinnatifida), sea mustard (SM; Saccharina japonica), and sea string (SS; Gracilaria verrucosa) powders. Moisture and ash contents were significantly higher in the USP-treated group than in the control (p<0.05). Potassium, calcium, and zinc contents were significantly higher in the SM than in the other USP-treated groups (p<0.05). In contrast, pH values were significantly higher in the ST and SM than in the control and SS (p<0.05). CIE L*, CIE a*, CIE b*, and shear force were significantly lower in the USP-treated groups than in the control (p<0.05). Sensory evaluation revealed no significant difference in taste, texture, seaweed-like odor, and goaty flavor (p<0.05). Principal component analysis (PCA) and peak graph analysis of the electronic nose showed that the SS differed the most from the control compared with the other USP-treated groups, owing to the seaweed odor of ultra-ground SS powder. The PCA and ranking analysis of the electronic tongue showed that the umami taste of the SM was higher than that of the control and other USP-treated groups. Therefore, the potassium, calcium, zinc contents, and umami taste of reconstituted black goat jerky were significantly higher in the SM than in the control and other USP-treated groups.

Comparative nutritional analysis for protopanaxadiol-enhanced genetically modified rice and its non-transgenic counterpart

  • In the assessment of the biosafety of genetically modified (GM) crops, a comparative approach to identifying similarities and differences between transgenic and non-transgenic crops is helpful in identifying potential safety and nutritional issues. In this study, we aimed to compare the nutritional composition of a protopanaxadiol-enhanced genetically modified rice (PPD GM rice) with its non-transgenic counterpart. The nutritional profile of PPD GM rice was assessed against that of the parental rice cultivar 'Dongjin' to ascertain nutritional equivalence. No differences were observed between PPD GM and Non-GM rice cultivar in proximate analysis, mineral content, and amino acid composition. Although significant differences were observed in crude fat, crude protein, total dietary fiber, and some minerals between PPD GM rice and Dongjin, these variances fell within the range suggested by common cultivars (Anmi and Nipponbare) and Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) data. Similarly, while some amino acids showed significant differences, these metabolites did not deviate from the OECD range. Principal component analysis (PCA) was conducted using the nutritional analysis data of PPD GM rice and Dongjin. The results revealed that PPD GM rice and Dongjin were grouped according to their respective cultivation years. This suggests that the variability in the nutritional composition of PPD GM rice tends to resemble that of the parental rice cultivar 'Dongjin' rather than being solely attributed to genetic modification. Overall, our findings indicate that the nutritional composition of PPD GM rice is substantially equivalent to that of its non-transgenic counterpart.

국내 대수층 유형 분류를 통한 지하수위와 수질의 특성화 (Characterization of Groundwater Level and Water Quality by Classification of Aquifer Types in South Korea)

  • 국가지하수관측망은 지하수 장해 예방과 지하수자원의 효율적 관리를 위해 유역별로 암반 대수층 또는 충적과 암반 대수층 모두에 설치·운영되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 수리지질학적 유형인 자유면과 피압 대수층으로 재분류하여 국내 지하수의 수위와 수질 특성을 재평가하고, 모니터링 자료의 활용방안을 모색하고자 하였다. 충적-암반 쌍으로 구성된 관측소에서 산출된 지하수위 관측자료의 주성분 분석(PCA) 결과, 충적-암반 대수층의 수위변동 주성분은 유사한 변동 패턴을 보였다. 강수량에 따른 수위 상승율과 질산성질소 농도에서도 유의미한 차이가 없었다. 반면, 수리지질학적 유형으로 분류한 경우, 자유면 대수층과 피압 대수층의 지하수위 변동 주성분이 서로 다른 특성을 보였다. 강수에 대한 지하수위 반응에서도 차이가 나타났는데, 수위 상승률은 자유면 대수층과 피압 대수층에서 각각 4.6 (R2=0.8)과 2.1 (R2=0.4)로 산정되어 피압 대수층에서는 강수 함양의 영향을 덜 받는 것으로 판단된다. 피압 대수층으로 분류된 관정들에서는 질산성질소 평균 농도가 3 mg/L 이하로, 인위적 오염의 영향을 거의 받지 않은 자연배경농도로 판단된다. 결과적으로, 국가지하수관측망의 대수층을 수리지질학적 유형으로 재분류했을 때, 수위변동 패턴과 질산성 질소 농도 분포에서 유형별 차이가 구분되어 대수층 유형 분류의 타당성을 검증할 수 있었다. 이러한 대수층의 수리지질학적 상태는 함양량 평가에 따른 지하수자원의 양적 관리와 잠재오염원으로부터의 수질 관리에 필요한 핵심정보를 제공함으로 지하수자원 관리에 기여할 수 있다.

지역별 산딸기 열매의 유용물질 함량, 항산화 활성 및 암세포 성장억제 효능 분석 (Bioactive Component Analysis, Antioxidant Activity, and Cytotoxicity on Cancer Cells on Rubus crataegifolius Clones by Region)

  • 본 연구는 산딸기 열매의 지역별(장성, 화성, 울산, 순창, 포항) 영양성분, 항산화 활성 및 암세포 성장억제 효능 분석을 통하여 기능성을 갖는 산딸기 품종을 육성하고자 수행하였다. 모든 지역의 산딸기 열매에서 일반성분은 탄수화물 함량이 높게 나타났으며, 무기성분은 칼슘($996.6{\mu}g/g{\pm}0.8%$)이 가장 높은 함량을 보였으며, 나트륨($6.2{\mu}g/g{\pm}1.0%$)은 가장 낮았다. 유리아미노산은 총 26종, 구성아미노산은 총 18종을 분석하였다. 전자공여능 실험 결과 울산 산딸기가 $500{\mu}g/ml$의 농도에서 열수추출물은 80%, 에탄올추출물은 82.6%의 높은 소거능을 보였다. 또한 암세포 성장억제 효과를 확인하기 위한 세포독성 실험 결과, B16F10 cell은 울산 산딸기 열수추출물과 포항 산딸기 에탄올추출물, H1299 cell은 순창 산딸기 열수추출물과 포항 산딸기 에탄올추출물 그리고 MCF-7 cell은 장성 산딸기 열수추출물과 순창 산딸기 에탄올추출물에서 각각 세포독성이 나타났다. 따라서 이와 같은 기초자료를 바탕으로 기능성 특성을 지닌 산딸기를 선발하여 기능성 품종으로의 개발 가능성을 확인할 수 있었다.

친환경 무기 형광 안료 A3V5O14 (A = K and Rb) and Cs2V4O11 개발: 결정구조, 광학적 특성 및 착색 특성 (Development of environmentally friendly inorganic fluorescent pigments, A3V5O14 (A = K and Rb) and Cs2V4O11: Crystal structure, optical and color properties)

  • 본 연구에서는 밝고 화사한 적색 및 황색의 착색 특성을 가지며, 우수한 발광특을 가진 새로운 무기 형광 안료를 개발하기 위하여, A3V5O14 (A = K and Rb) 및 Cs2V4O11를 water assisted solid state reaction(WASSR) 방법과 고상법을 혼합하여 합성을 하였다. 합성한 A3V5O14 (A = K and Rb ) 및 Cs2V4O11 샘플은 AVO3 및 AV3O8 (A = K, Rb and Cs)가 불순물로 다소 확인되었으나, trigonal 구조의 A3V5O14 (A = K and Rb)와 orthorhombic 구조의 Cs2V4O11가 주상으로 확인되었다. A3V5O14 (A = K and Rb)와 Cs2V4O11는 자외선 영역에서 강한 광흡수를 나타내었으며, 각각 적색광 및 녹색광 발광을 나타내었다. 또한, 합성된 A3V5O14 (A = K and Rb)는 a* 값 (+ : 적색도, -: 녹색도)은 각각 + 35.5와 + 45.9를, Cs2V4O11는 b* 값(+: 황색도, -: 청색도)는 + 50.3을 나타내었으며, 45 이상의 L* 값(명도)을 가지고 있어, 밝고 화사한 느낌을 구현하기위한 황색안료로 응용이 가능할 것으로 기대된다.
