Application of Ultrasonography to Investigate Postpartum Anestrus in Water Buffaloes

  • Anestrus is one of the most important production limiting disorders in dairy buffaloes and its underlying causes have been a current topic of studies. The objectives of this study were to explore the causes of anestrus in buffaloes with the application of ultrasonography. Two examinations were performed by transrectal ultrasonography at 12 days apart in buffalo cows that were not seen in oestrus at 60 or more days postpartum. As high as 54.5% buffaloes had silent ovulation and 45.5% suffered from the true anestrus with ovarian dysfunction. The duration of anestrus after calving was 60~90, 91~120, 121~180 and 181~365 days in 27%, 32%, 18% and 23% buffalo cows, respectively. Treatment with prostaglandin of cyclic buffalo cows with a corpus luteum (72.7%) resulted in higher estrous rate as compared with close observation of estrus (23.1%) by the farmer (p=0.021). Acyclic buffalo cows without any corpus luteum on ovaries were successfully treated with gonadotropin releasing hormone (70%), resulting in higher estrous detection rate than those treated with a vitamin-mineral mixture (20%) (p=0.035). In conclusion, poor heat detection due to silent ovulation is the most important cause of apparent anoestrus in buffaloes; however the percentage of the true anestrous is also quite high in postpartum buffaloes.

A Sensitive Procedure for the Rapid Determination of Mandelic Acid by Flow Injection Analysis and Chemiluminescence Detection

  • A rapid and sensitive chemiluminescence (CL) method using flow-injection (FI) has been developed for the determination of mandelic acid which is based on the enhancement of mandelic acid to the CL intensity of ${Ru(bipy)_{3}}^{2+}$-Ce(IV) system. The enhancement effect was dependent on the concentration of mandelic acid, based on which, CL system was established for the determination of mandelic acid. The concentrations of ${Ru(bipy)_{3}}^{2+}$+, Ce(IV), and $H_2SO_4$ were optimized. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the linear range and detection limit are 1.46-342.0 ${\mu}g/ml$ and 0.072 ${\mu}g/ml$, respectively. The correlation coefficient (R) was 0.99732. The utility of this method was demonstrated by determining mandelic acid in capsules and human urine sample.

Analysis and Comparison of Rock Spectroscopic Information Using Drone-Based Hyperspectral Sensor

  • We conducted a fundamental study on geological and rock detection via drone-based hyperspectral imaging on various types of small rock samples and interpreted the obtained information to compare and classify rocks. Further, we performed hyperspectral imaging on ten rocks, and compared the peak data value and reflectance of rocks. Results showed a difference in the reflectance and data value of the rocks, indicating that the rock colors and minerals vary or the reflectance is different owing to the luster of the surface. Among the rocks, limestone used for hyperspectral imaging is grayish white, inverted rock contains various sizes and colors in the dark red matrix, and granite comprises colorless minerals, such as white, black, gray, and colored minerals, resulting in a difference in reflectance. The reflectance of the visible ray range in ten rocks was 16.00~85.78%, in the near infrared ray range, the average reflectance was 23.94~86.43%, the lowest in basalt and highest in marble in both cases. This is because of the pores in basalt, which caused the difference in reflectance.

Trace Elements Deficiency and the Diagnostic Usefulness of Hair Mineral Analysis in Children with Chronic Gastrointestinal Disease (만성 소화기 질환 환아에서 미량원소 결핍과 모발 검사의 유용성)

  • Purpose: Patients with chronic gastrointestinal disease are at risk for trace element deficiency due to impaired absorption and gastrointestinal loss. The aim of this study was to evaluate the trace element status of patients with gastrointestinal disease by blood and hair analysis, and to determine the usefulness of hair mineral analysis for diagnosing trace element deficiency not detected by a blood test. Methods: An analysis of hair minerals was performed and compared with blood mineral analysis in 13 patients with chronic gastrointestinal disease. The concentration of each element in the hair and blood was compared in the subgroups based on parenteral nutritional support or clinical symptoms. Results: Almost all patients had trace element deficiency. The trace elements deficient in the blood or hair analysis included zinc, selenium and copper. The hair zinc concentration was significantly lower in the group receiving parenteral nutritional support. The hair selenium concentration was statistically associated with the clinical symptoms of hair loss, brittle hair and loss of hair pigmentation. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that patients with chronic gastrointestinal disease should receive adequate zinc and selenium replacement to avoid trace element deficiency especially when treated with long-term parenteral nutrition. Hair mineral analysis is useful as a complementary tool for the detection of a trace element deficiency.

  • We have applied the geophysical survey, mainly electric and electromagnetic (EM) methods, to a test site contaminated by hydrocarbon waste disposal and local spill. The multi-frequency, moving source & receiver EM survey along with ground penetrating radar (GPR) showed a fairly good performance in detection of buried metal pipes and objects. Magnetic survey measuring vertical and horizontal gradients were so sensitive to the small metallic objects spread over the surface that it's hard to discriminate the buried pipe. We chose electrical resistivity, EM and GPR survey to examine the soil contamination. Depth slices of resistivity distribution as the results of the inversion of resistivity and EM data coincided each other and closely matched the contaminated area determined by chemical analysis of the soil samples. GPR images did not show the reflection events related with contamination plume since there are no distinct spill in this site. We inferred the contamination using the penetration depth of the GPR energy, which could be used as auxiliary information to the resistivity and EM results. We summarized the applicability of each survey methods based on this results and proposed a desirable survey scheme for the determination of hydrocarbon contaminated site.

Analysis on the contamination and source of VOCs in groundwaters of Gwangju area (광주광역시의 지하수 중 휘발성유기화합물(VOCs)의 오염과 오염원 분석)

  • VOCs were detected in the 21 groundwaters out of 37 groundwaters sampled from around the Hanam Industrial Complex and the Gwangju stream. Ten components of chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons of VOCs were detected in the 18 groundwater samples. Among them, total trihalomethanes (TTHM) concentration is in the range of $0.1~36.2{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/L$, CECs concentration is $2.3~190{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/L$, and chlorinated solvents concentration containing PCE, TCE, etc. is $0.1~124.2{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/L$ respectively. Ten components of the aromatic hydrocarbons of VOCs were detected in the 5 groundwater samples, but their concentration are less than $1{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/L$. Detection frequency and concentration of the chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons components from the groundwaters in the Hanam Industrial Complex are higher than those of nearby downtown Gwangju stream. VOCs components except for TCE are lower than the MCL of USGS drinking water standard. TCE concentration of the 2 groundwater samples is over MCL, whose concentrations are 5 and 25 times higher than MCL, respectively. TCE is detected from the H8 and H10 groundwater samples and CFCs is detected H8 and H11 groundwater samples in the Hanam Industrial Complex. TTHM in study area is estimated from leakage of the main waters or sewage waters. Because most of the studied groundwater is under an aerobic condition, aromatic hydrocarbons are well degraded. But chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons are degraded very slowly.

Determination of bromide in bottled mineral water and ground water in Korea (먹는 샘물 및 지하수 원수 중 bromide 분석연구)

  • This study was performed to compare international analytical methods of bromide and applied to determine bromide in bottled mineral water and raw ground water in Korea. Bromide in water was eluted by 10~50 mM potassium hydroxide (KOH) and determined by ion chromatography-suppressed conductivity detector (IC-CD). Sample was purified with Ba- and H-on-guard cartridge and $0.2\;{\mu}m$ membrane filter. The method detection limit (MDL) and the limit of quantitation (LOQ) of bromide were 0.2 and $0.5\;{\mu}g/L$, respectively. The calibration curve showed good lineality above 0.9993 in the ranges of the $0.5\sim80\;{\mu}g/L$. A correlation coefficient of bromide in ground water and sum of bromide and bromate in bottled mineral water is 0.808.

A study on the emission of fluorine-based chemicals and the detection of perfluorooctane sulfonic acids(PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acids(PFOA) in domestic main rivers (국내 불소계 화학물질 배출 현황 및 주요 수계의 과불화화합물(PFOS, PFOA) 검출 특성에 관한 연구)

  • As a result of the survey on the emission status of fluorine-based chemicals in Korea, 13 kinds of substances, including hydrogen fluoride (91%) and perfluorocarbons (5%), were emitted in workplaces. By regional groups, about 98% was emitted in the Gyeongbuk, Gyeonggi and Chungcheong regions, and about 98% in three sectors of industry related to manufacture of electronic parts, chemicals and non-metallic mineral products. The detection status of PFOS and PFOA in domestic main rivers was continuously detected in the Nakdong River, the Geum River and the Anseong Stream estuary with high fluorine-related chemical emissions, and four sites of PFOS and two sites of PFOA were detected for the first time in 2021. PFOS and PFOA were continuously detected in relatively high concentrations in the rivers where there were many semiconductor and display related sectors of industry.

Operational Ship Monitoring Based on Integrated Analysis of KOMPSAT-5 SAR and AIS Data (Kompsat-5 SAR와 AIS 자료 통합분석 기반 운영레벨 선박탐지 모니터링)

  • The possibility of ship detection monitoring at operational level using KOMPSAT-5 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and Automatic Identification System (AIS) data is investigated. For the analysis, the KOMPSAT-5 SLC images, which are collected from the west coast of Shinjin port and the northern coast of Jeju port are used along with portable AIS data from near the coast. The ship detection algorithm based on HVAS (Human Visual Attention System) was applied, which has significant advantages in terms of detection speed and accuracy compared to the commonly used CFAR (Constant False Alarm Rate). As a result of the integrated analysis, the ship detection from KOMPSAT-5 and AIS were generally consistent except for small vessels. Some ships detected in KOMPSAT-5 but not in AIS are due to the data absence from AIS, while it is clearly visible in KOMPSAT-5. Meanwhile, SAR imagery also has some false alarms due to ship wakes, ghost effect, and DEM error (or satellite orbit error) during object masking in land. Improving the developed ship detection algorithm and collecting reliable AIS data will contribute for building wide integrated surveillance system of marine territory at operational level.

Object Detection from High Resolution Satellite Image by Using Genetic Algorithms

  • With the commercial availability of very high resolution satellite imagery, the concealment of national confidential targets such as military facilities became one of the most bothering task to the image distributors. This task has been carried out by handwork masking of the target objects. Therefore, the quality of the concealment was fully depends on the ability and skill of a worker. In this study, a spectral clustering based technique for the seamless concealment of confidential targets in high resolution imagery was developed. The applicability test shows that the proposed technique can be used as a practical procedure for those who need to hide some information in image before public distribution
