  • Mineral composition and content of 22 Korean Dancheong pigment products were obtained by Rietveld quantitative analysis. Jubosa, Hwang, Seokrok, Seokcheong and Hobun consist of pure cinnabar, orpiment, malachite, azurite and calcite (or aragonite), respectively. Whereas Seokganju, Hwangto, Noerok, Lapis lazuli, Baekto and Cockie hobun mainly consist of hematite, goethite, celadonite, lazurite, kaolin mineral and portlandite, respectively. And they all consist of soil minerals (quartz, feldspar, sericite and vermiculite) and filler minerals in the industry field (calcite, gypsum and anhydrite) at a different content. Quantitative XRD proved more useful method to determined exact mineral composition and content than chemical or microscopical data. If this method utilize for specification of natural pigment product, it is considered to be applicable in restoration technology and conservation science field.

  • This study was focused on whether or not isoflavones affect the increase in bone mineral density of growing females. Female Sprague-Dawley rats ($60{\pm}5\;g$) were randomly assigned to two groups and provided control diets (control group) or isoflavone-supplemented diet (IF group, 57.8 mg isoflavones/100 g diet) for 9 weeks in growing female rats. Measurements of Bone Mineral Density (BMD) and Bone Mineral Content (BMC) on the experimental animals were executed in the $3^{rd}$, $6^{th}$, $9^{th}$ weeks. In result, there was no significant difference in spine BMD between the isoflavones supplemented group and the control group. But, the IF group tended to have higher BMD than the control group in between 3 and 9 experimental weeks, and the striking difference could be shown in the $6^{th}$ week of feeding. In case of femur BMD, the effects of added isoflavones appeared in the $6^{th}$ week of feeding, and it became intensified in the $9^{th}$ week of feeding to the extent that the BMD in the IF group was significantly higher than that of the control group (p<0.05). In conclusion, isoflavone supplementation increased spine BMD per weight in the $6^{th}$ week of feeding, and affected the increase of femur BMD in the $9^{th}$ week. The result of the experiment implies that it affects positively the formation of spine and femur BMD of growing female rats. The study also suggests that the effects of isoflavone on the pattern of BMD formation might differ from the parts of bones.

  • Global warming caused by the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere is being treated as a major problem for the human life, and mineral carbonation is drawing attention as one of many countermeasures against this situation. In this study, mineral carbonation experiments using autoclaved lightweight concrete (ALC) were performed under various conditions to determine its potential as a carbonation material. ALC can be regarded as a promising material for carbonation because it contains about 27 wt.% of CaO, a major component of mineral carbonation. The CaCO3 content produced as a result of the carbonation of ALC calculated on the assumption that all of the CaO content participates in mineral carbonation is about 40 wt.%. The optimum conditions for the mineral carbonation reaction from ALC are the solid-liquid ratio of 0.01 and the reaction time of 180 minutes when calcite is considered as a single product, or 0.06 and 180 minutes when mixture of calcite and vaterite can be considered. The coexistence of vaterite with calcite at solid-liquid ratio of 0.06 or higher was interpreted to be the case where vaterite formed in the later stage and did not change to calcite until the reaction was completed.

  • In most domestic construction fields, excessive cement content has been used because of stubborn official inspection. The purpose of this study is to reduce the cement content of mix proportioning for the decrease of hydration heat, brittleness and drying shrinkage which governs durability of concrete significantly. Parameters includes the compressive strengths, type and dosage rate of chemical and mineral admixtures and types of concrete. It is found that the chemical admixture is efficient to the reduction of cement content for high strength concrete (400kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$) and the effectiveness of mineral admixtures in the low strength concrete is somewhat higher than the high strength concrete.

  • In this study, the compound materials of GRT/plastics (HDPE, LLDPE, LDPE, PP and PS) were developed. Their tensile strength, strain at yield and flexural modulus according to the change in CRT content were measured. And, the physical properties of the compound materials that the GRT content was changed in the waste vinyl HDPE and pure HDPE were measured, compared and analyzed. If tile GRT is added to PE plastics, the physical properties were superior to those of PP and PS, and in the case of HDPE, the waste vinyl HDPE had superior physical properties by the GRT content to the pure HDPE.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of application dosage and methods of selenium (Se) on mineral contents in garlic. The content of Se was higher in upland than paddy fields. Application of higher dosage of Se salt increased higher content of Se in leaf sheath and bulb of garlic. Se was detected also in the non-treated plot but its amount was negligible. Absorption of Se in garlic was higher when Se was applied in the form of sodium selenate. Foliar application of sodium selenate enriched Se content in garlic as compared with the soil dressing. However, Se content in garlic fluctuated depending on growing conditions. Se content of garlic grown on the artificial soil (vermiculite and commercial soil) in the plastic house was higher than the garlic grown in the paddy field. The growth of garlic was not affected by types, dosage and application methods of selenium. Mineral contents in garlic such as Mg, S and K were higher in the selenium treatment than control. However, this trend was not evident according to dosages of selenium fertilizers.

  • Content of crude protein in both pileus and stalk increased progresively as growth period became longer and then decreased at old stage. Contents of ash and reducing sugars followed the same trend as that of the crude protein. However, content of crude lipid decreased as growth progressed more. Seventeen kinds of amino acid were detected in Lentinula. Content of total amino acid increased as mushroom grew more, but decreased after old stage. The amino acid such as Glu, His, Gly and Ala were contained with relatively large amount in Lentinula. Content of free amino acid showed the similar trends as that of total amino acid. Contents of most of the mineral increased as growth period progressed, but K content decreased as growth period became longer. Contents of K and P were much higher than contents of other mineral. The major fatty acid contained in Lentinula were linoleicacid, palmitic acid and oleic acid. The large amount of volatile component in Lentinula was 1-octen-3-ol, so that this material was speculated to be major source of perfume. Other perfumic materials such ethyl acetate, 3-octanone, ethanol, (E)-2-octenal, 4-octen-3-one, acetaldehyde, ethyl formate were also contained in Lentinula, especially in pilous.
