  • Medical lift column controlling the vertical position while supporting heavy eccentric load should have the high fatigue strength as well as the extremely low structural deflection and vibration in order to maintain the positioning accuracy. The lift column driven by a induction motor is generally in a three-step sliding boom structure and exhibits the time-varying stress distribution according to the up-and-down motion. This study is concerned with the numerical prediction of the fatigue strength of the lift column subject to the time-varying stress caused by the up-and-down motion. The stress variation during a motion cycle is obtained by finite element analysis and the fatigue life is predicted making use of Palmgren-miner's rule and S-N curves. In order to secure the numerical analysis reliability, a 3-D FEM, model in which the detailed lift column structure and the fitting parts are fully considered, is generated and the interfaces between lift column and pads are treated by the contact condition.

  • In this study, a fatigue analysis of an external fuel tank and pylon for fixed-wing aircraft was carried out as part of the domestic development of fixed-wing aircraft. Through structural analysis, the analysis areas were selected, and the transfer function for unit loads was established in the selected parts. For each of the continuous load profiles, stress components in the selected areas were calculated using the load of each profile and the transfer function, and the Von Mises equivalent stress was employed as the representative stress of each profile. In addition, the rainflow counting technique was used to extract individual profiles obtained from the initial large load profiles and to calculate their amplitude and average values. For life evaluation, the S-N diagram of the Metallic Materials Properties Development and Standardization (MMPDS) was applied, and the damage value was calculated by Miner's rule to assess the life of the selected area. As a result of the life assessment, the life span requirement for the selected area of the external fuel tank and the pylon was assessed as being satisfied.

  • This paper focuses on improvement of the reliability for endurance test to serve military automobiles. The driving loads have been measured by use of the wireless telemetry system for the drive shaft of the 4-wheel drive car. In order to analyze the transmission input torque and engine revolution of loads of the test courses and unpaved road have been made use of the revolution counting and cumulative damage by miner's rule. This paper presents the evaluated result for quantified damage about the test courses and roads.

  • The objectives of this study were to analyze the load acting on the transmission when tractor performed rotary operations in the poorly drained paddy fields and to compare its severeness with those obtained under different operational conditions. The loads were measured at the input shaft of the transmission and the load spectrum was constructed using the rain-flow cycle counting method. The severeness of the loads was represented by the partial damage sum which was determined by suing the modified Miner's rule. In the field with a shallow hardpan PTO speed affected severeness of the rotary operations greater than the forward speed did. In the field with deep hardpan, on the other hand, the effect of the forward speed was greater. the severeness in the well drained fields did not differ significantly from that in the field with a shallow hardpan. The severest load was recorded in the field with a deep hardpan.

  • Using the fatigue test results obtained in the SAE Fatigue Cumulative Damage Test Program, prediction methods of fatigue crack initiation life for notched members undergoing random loaming histories were discussed in detail. Conventional fatigue life predictions based on so-called modified Miner's rule were found to be apt to give nonconservative estimate, due to lack of sufficient consideration for stress-interaction effect. A modified .epsilon.-N curve concept was proposed to account for the stress-interaction effect. The predicted fatigue life based on the modified .epsilon.-N curve concept was in good agreement with the experimental results of SAE Test Program. Specifically for the cases when fatigue data was not available at hand, was proposed a procedure to give conservative estimate of fatigue life.

  • Camber with positive deflection is one of the very important design parameters in the manufacture of railway coach. Positive camber is defined as concave shape such as an arch and it increases the strength of structure remarkably. But during the operation of a structure, the positive camber turns into negative camber and it loses the strength of structure. Therefore we should consider the camber effect when we evaluate the fatigue strength of negative cambered structure. For this purpose, we made a model of negative cambered locomotive car body and performed structural analysis and also we measured the dynamic loads at critical points during commercial line operation. Fatigue strength of locomotive was calculated by applying Miner's damage accumulation rule. Fatigue strength of the two locomotives which have different camber were compared to find out the effect of camber on dynamic load amplitude. We found that the more negative camber a locomotive had, the shorter fatigue strength obtained.

  • In this study, the counting method for multi-axial and multi-point load states was proposed. Using this counting method, the load spectrum is generated from the service load history which is measured for boom structure of excavator. Loading state for loading points of boom structure is described as a multi-dimensional state space. From this load spectrum, the stress spectrum was generated by FEM analysis using the superposition of the unit load. The cumulated damage at the severe damage point of In nm structure by the failure example is calculated by Palmgren-Miner's rule. As a result of this study, the fatigue life estimation using the multi-axial and multi-point load counting method is useful.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop improved boom structures with reliable fatigue strength of weldment and lower production cost. For that purpose, multi-body dynamic analysis was performed to evaluate forces acting on arm & boom cylinders and joints of boom structure during operation of an excavator for three working postures, then stress analysis was made to investigate stress distribution around diaphragms at the bottom plate of boom structures which was known to be susceptible to fatigue failures of welded joints, and finally boom structures with optimum arrangement of diaphragms was proposed. This work mainly consists of the following two parts: part 1 focuses on multi-body dynamic analysis of excavators during operation and part 2 includes evaluations of fatigue strength of welded joints for modified boom structures.

  • This paper deals with the lifetime prediction of Aircraft Flaperon Joint made of AISI 4130 steel. Reviews are performed on the published damage models at first. And three different damage models are used for predicting the fatigue life of the structure subjected to variable amplitude fatigue loading. These models require no increase in complexity of use, nor do they require additional material property or mission loading information to achieve the improved accuracy. Finally a comparison among the fatigue results is performed. It is observed that the Miner's rule could predict longer life than other cumulative damage models which take into account loads below the endurance limit.

  • Fatigue life prediction methodology of the rubber component made of vulcanized natural rubber under variable amplitude loadings was studied. The displacement-controlled fatigue tests were conducted at different levels and the maximum Green-Lagrange strain was selected as damage parameters. A fatigue life curve of the rubber represented by the maximum Green-Lagrange strain was determined from the nonlinear finite element analysis. The transmission load history of SAE as variable amplitude loading was used to perform the fatigue life prediction. And then a signal processing of variable loading by racetrack and simplified rainflow cycle counting methods were performed. The modified miner's rule as cumulative damage summation was used. Finally, when the gate value is 30%, the predicted fatigue life of the rubber component agreed well with the experimental fatigue lives with a factor of two.
