  • A purpose of this study is to study on Rene Descartes's mind-body theory in medical aspect. Though Rene Descartes was not so much a doctor as a philosopher, he had health and medical science at heart. When he came into the world in 1596, he was in poor health. Therefore, he suffered from his bad health. Descartes's ideas absolutely colored Western thought for three hundred years, especially, his mind-body theory, mechanistic life-view, and reductionism had important effect on medical study and science of public health. As a rule, we know that his mind-body theory was applicable to mind-body dualism, and his mind-body dualism was connected with biomedical model of medicine. But by this study, his mind-body theory was not only mind-body dualism but also mind-body monoism. And he asserted mind-body interaction too. In other words, he advocated mind-body dualism in scientific aspect, but he knew mind-body monoism from his experence. He confessed this fact to Princess Elizabeth of Bohemia, he wrote mind-body interaction in $\boxDr$Discours de la methode$\boxUl$, $\boxDr$Meditationes de prima philosophia$\boxUl$, and $\boxDr$Traite des passions de 1'ame$\boxUl$ etc. However, only mind-body dualism of his mind-body theories was written in our medical text book, morever mental realm was excluded from the persuit of learning Descartes advocated a mechanistic world-view and mechanistic life-view, he regarded human body as a machine part. And a paticent corresponds to a troubled machine, a doctor deserves a repairman. But this point of view made holistic understanding of man impossible. Descartes divide the whole into basic building blocks, we named the approach Reductionism. Reductionism led to ontological concept in medical science, bacteriology established 'specific cause-specific disease-specific therapy'. We examined medical influence of Descartes's thought, we need to draw out a philosophic basis of medical science and science of public health by a close study of his records.

  • This study aims to look into the concept of Human Mind and Moral Mind and the issue of their axiological interpretation in Daesoon Thought. In the Song dynasty, the concept of the Human Mind and Moral Mind was understood as indicating two aspects of the universal Human Mind. Discourse on this theory was undertaken by scholars such as Cheng Yichuan (程伊川), Su Shi (蘇軾), and Zhu Xi (朱熹). The differences between the Human Mind and Moral Mind were interpreted as issues of cultivation. The discussion of the Human Mind and Moral Mind were established through a systematic theory by Zhu Xi, and this developed into various forms of discourse and ideological stances thereafter. One of the most important issues of the Human Mind and Moral Mind theory was its axiological interpretation, which was divided largely into three patterns. One was to interpret the Human Mind and Moral Mind as evil and good respectively (proponents included Cheng Yichuan and Zhu Xi in his early theories), the other one saw them as value-neutral and good (proponents included Zhu Xi, Toegye 退溪, and Yulgok 栗谷), and the last one interpretation held them as pre-evil and pre-good (Dasan 茶山). As the Human Mind and Moral Mind can be seen as a universal human issue, the examination of those patterns in the Confucian tradition would be meaningful for understanding the Human Mind and Moral Mind as a theoretical base in Daesoon Thought. In Daesoon Thought, the Human Mind and Moral Mind are defined as private and public respectively, but no further explanation is provided regarding these items. If we infer by considering the two in the light of the overall ideology and values that Daesoon Jinrihoe pursues, the Human Mind can be said to represent basic biological desires such as clothing, food, and sexual satisfaction all of which are human vital activities needed for the preservation of the human race. The Moral Mind can be seen as a mind that is set upon practicing morality and realizing the ideological aims of 'supporting the nation and comforting the people,' 'vast saving all creatures,' and achieving 'harmony and peace for humankind.' However, the conscience and the selfish mind, which are related axiologically to the Human Mind and the Moral Mind, are defined respectively as good and evil and explained in a relatively systematic way which includes conceptual claims and details on the origin of these aspects of mind. The reason why the discussions of the conscience and selfish mind are more systematically described than the Human Mind and Moral Mind seems to be that issues relating to the conscience and selfish mind are more directly applicable to matters of religious doctrine.

  • Toegye and Yulgok both tried to obtain the extent of goodness from the emotion they feel in reality. Toegye thought the extent of goodness is being obtained by Li[理], Yulgok thought it by Chi[氣]. But Four Bases[四端] as goodness from Li[理] would possibly threat the human identity, and the emotion of appropriateness as goodness from Chi[氣] doesn't even prove itself that it is appropriate. They explain the problems and answers through Theory of Human Mind?Moral Mind. Toegye explains that Moral Mind is meaningful as it make people identify themselves as moral existence, Yulgok explains Moral Mind is meaningful that it satisfies standard of appropriateness. While Toegye and Yulgok define Moral Mind and Human Mind as emotion of Yi-fa[已發], Chutzu defines Moral Mind and Human Mind as consciousness. and he defines consciousness as 'preparing Li(理) and practicing the emotion'. So according to Chutzu, Moral Mind and Human Mind derives the reaction from the Li(理) in order to respond to the external stimulation. Supervision of mind is completed by consciousness of Moral Mind. It means that mind not limited to Yi-fa[已發]. Then we should think that Toegye and Yulgok's Theory of Human Mind?Moral Mind is something newly resulted from their own philosophic problem. Toegye and Yulgok's Theory of Human Mind?Moral Mind is commonly explaining human mind in experiential aspect, and it will be esteemed as definite and realistic theory of Mind because it emphasizes willingness which motivates an essential activity.

  • This study was purposed to explore children's development in the theory of mind. Children of age 7, 9 and 11 explained others' good and bad behaviors, and answered to questions about ‘mind’ and ‘heart’ Children's behavior explanations with internal factors, including traits and mental states, were scored and analyzed. The responses of mind-related knowledges were categorized and compared by age. Results showed that children's internal explanations were not different with age, and most of the children explained internally for others' bad behaviors more than for good ones. Secondly, children conceptualized cold-minded ‘mind’ and hot-minded ‘heart’ differentially, but showed developmental differences in mind-related knowledges. It was hard for the younger children to explain ‘mind’ and ‘heart’ Children came to construct their knowledge with age; ‘mind’ including cognitive monitoring, and ‘heart’ working outside the personal emotions.

  • In both the East and the West, the most classical question in classical philosophy was, "What is truly a human virtue and a good man?" A good man realized a human virtue. A good man was composed of mind and body. The question is harmony of mind and body. This article aims to articulate the terms related on Mind and Body in Confucian analects. We analyzed the terms related to Mind (mind, mind-heart, human nature, feeling, will etc) and we analyzed the terms related to Body (body, self, ki etc). Confucius's Theory of Mind and Body Relation focus on self-cultivation and revelation of universal virtue. Chu-his(1130-1200)'s commentary of the terms related on Mind and Body in Confucian analects is based on Heaven's principle vs. man's desire. He advanced the theory of the human mind and moral mind on the bases of Li-Ki. Dasan(1762-1836) deconstructs the mind-law of 16 characters and the theory of Li-KI. He argues that the human mind and moral mind coexist as a servant and a master. Dasan insists that the human mind is controlled by the moral mind but he wants to reconstruct the new theory of mind-body, mind-heart.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of the mind maps which were drawn with pencil or color pens by elementary students. For this study, 31 students of the 6th grade were selected and trained mind mapping. After training, the subjects had drawn mind maps with color pens about the ROCK for 15minutes and drew mind maps with pencil after 2days of mind mapping using color pens. In addition to activities of mind mapping, the students handed in their papers which were written one's impression of drawing two kinds of mind mapping. The results were follows: First, in central circle which was linked words connected firstly with ROCK as key word, the difference of 2kinds mind maps were little showed in the quantity and quality of the words, branches and their adequacy. Second, the mind maps using pencils had more words, branches and images than mind maps of using color pens in the whole assessment. Third, the most students suggested that the mind mapping using pencil were advantage to economy of time, retouching words and branches, also the mind mapping using pencil made the students relax the strain for drawing it because of retouching possibility. Consequently, the results of this study suggest the mind mapping using pencil has advantage effect on the purpose of gaining students' thinking abundantly and economy of time in elementary science classes.

  • We have numerous terms representing mind. We can understand them largely as the relationship of 'Discernible Mind' and 'Indiscernible Mind.' Because, our understanding mind is formed by linguistic discernment. When any discernment arise from our mind, we recognize the mind shown by discernment[Discernible Mind]. At the same time, we can think orignal mind[Indiscernible Mind] outside that discernment. Buddhism, generally, has understood mind in the relation with everything. That is to say, they have understood it from the perspective of dependent co-arising. In the early Buddhism and the abhidharma Buddhism, approaches to mind were mainly made by the discerning method. They explained arising and vanishing of 'Discernible Mind' by the law of dependent arising. Co-arisen 'Discernible Mind' is impermanent and temporary. But they never be denied on 'Discernible Mind' as an vainness. In $Mah{\bar{a}}y{\bar{a}}na$ Buddhism, $N{\bar{a}}garjuna$ understood the essence of dependent arising as the ${\acute{s}}{\bar{u}}nyata$ (emptiness) and the law of dependent arising as simultaneous dependence, not gradual dependences. $N{\bar{a}}garjuna$ criticized on vainness of Discernible Mind through ${\acute{s}}{\bar{u}}nyata$, and made possible to directly perceive Indiscernible Mind, before Discernment. Undiscriminating Mind can not be explained for being stayed beyond the state linguistic discernment(false discrimination), however, had been approached from various other names to potential consciousness or original nature. While ${\acute{s}}{\bar{u}}nata$ thought focused on criticizing vainness of discernment, Hwaeum thought suggested aspect of Indiscernible mind from the aspect of $ekay{\bar{a}}na$ dependant co-arising that everything has been co-arisen, the truth of discrimination. Furthermore, it opened the path to affirm the both indiscernible mind and discernible mind by illuminating that everything is manifestation of original nature itself, i.e. nature-arising. Hwaeum thought focused on perfect understanding by explicating the relation both indiscernible mind and discernible mind from the view point of non-abiding, rather than clarifying 'Discernible Mind' and 'Indiscernible Mind', itself. That is to say, from the aspect of dependant co-arising, Hwaeum thought plays a role that enters the indiscernible world from discernible world, and also, another role, from the aspect of nature-arising that is manifesting discernible world from indiscernible world. These aspects are important for righteous understanding on mind, and also simultaneously, very effective for healing disease of obsession, a kind of metal disease.

  • Western Medicine had been taking the occurrence of a disease as a physical matter and had tried to step forward from this angle till the late twentieth. But lately for about 20 years, a lot of researchers have started to understand the disease and human function as those in holistic system They supposed that the human function was the result of the interactions in 'Mind-Brain-Body' system and tried to explain and prove about the theory at the molecular level. The name of this new field of human science is 'Mind-Body Medicine' and in the center stand the 'Psychoneuroendoimmunology. Traditional Korean Medicine of which the core system was formed 2500 years ago, explains the complex interaction between mind and body with the theory of 'Mind-Brain-Body' system. To research on the correlation between mind and body, we tried to explain from the viewpoint of medical classic about the philosophical background, relations among mind, five viscera, and body, interaction between mind and body.
