Experiment study on a down scaled two-phase catalytic reactor is presented. As a preliminary step for the development of catalytic reactor, nano-particulate catalyst was prepared. Perovskite La$\_$0.8/Sr$\_$0.2/CoO$_3$is chosen and synthesized as a catalyst considering superior catalytic performance in reduction and oxidation process where oxygen is involved among the reagent. Reactor that has a scale of 2${\times}$10${\times}$25mm was made by machining of A1 block as a layered structure considering further extension to micro-machining. Hydrogen peroxide of 70wt% was adopted as reactant and was provided to the reactor loaded with 1.5 g of catalyst. Reactant flow rate was varied by precision pump with a range of 0.15cc/min to 17.2cc/min. Temperature distribution within reactor was recorded by 3 thermocouples and total amount of liquid product was measured. Temperature distribution and factors that affect temperature were observed and relation between temperature distribution and production rate was also analyzed. Relative time scale plays a significant role in the performance of the reactor. To obtain steady state operation, appropriate ratio of flow rate, catalyst mass and reactor geometry is required and furthermore to get more efficient production rate temperature distribution should be evenly distributed. The database obtained by the experiment will be used as a design parameter for micro reactor.

This paper shows a non-contact optical method to inspect micron scale parts which will be manufactured in micro-factory system. This inspection system should have some characteristics like a small size, flexibility, and high measuring speed. In the viewpoint of measuring capabilities, it also has resolution under micron scale with measuring range over millimeter scale. Two methods will be presented in this paper, one is Moire and the other is white-light scanning interferometry. Also some experimental results will be presented to show the possibilities of the proposed inspection system.
Starburst galaxies have strong star formation activity and generate large scale outflows which eject a huge amount of gas mass. This process affects galaxy activity, and therefore, the detailed study of nearby starburst galaxies could provide valuable information for the study of distant ones. So far there have been only a few studies of galactic-scale molecular outflows due to the sensitivity limitation of telescopes. Our study provides two nearby examples, NGC 2146 and NGC 3628. We used Nobeyama Millimeter Array (NMA) CO(1-0) data, Chandra soft X-ray data, and NMA 3 mm data to study the kinematics of molecular outflows, their interaction with ionized outflows, and the star forming activity in the starburst region. We found that the gas ejected through molecular outflows is much more significant than that used to form stars.
Flywheel energy storage systems have advantages over other types of energy storage devices in such aspects as unlimited charge/discharge cycles and environmental friendliness. In this paper we propose a millimeter scale flywheel energy storage device. The flywheel is supported by a pair of passive magnetic bearings and rotated by a toroidally wound electric motor/generator. The geometry of the bearings is optimized for the maximum dynamic performance.
As the most sensitive radio interferometer ever operated in millimeter/submillimeter, the ALMA has opened a new window on extragalactic astronomy. Its superior resolution and sensitivity allow the community to study the gas kinematics of distant galaxies as well as the molecular gas properties of nearby galaxies in GMC scale, already in its early commissioning stage. Also the ALMA provides a great tool to probe the dust contents of extragalactic sources at all redshifts, which is important in understanding of galaxy formation and evolution history over cosmic time. In this presentation, I will review the ALMA capabilities with the emphasis on the extragalactic science. I will also revisit some highlights from the early science and discuss future perspectives.
We report the first detection of linearly polarized emission at an observing wavelength of 350 mum from the radio-loud active galactic nucleus 3C 279. We conducted polarization observations for 3C 279 using the SHARP polarimeter in the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory on 2014 March 13 and 14. For the first time, we detected the linear polarization with the degree of polarization of $13.3%{\pm}3.4%$ (3.9sigma) and the electric vector position angle (EVPA) of $34.^{\circ}7{\pm}5.^{\circ}6$. We also observed 3C 279 simultaneously at 13, 7, and 3.5 mm in dual polarization with the Korean very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) Network on 2014 March 6 (single dish) and imaged in milliarcsecond (mas) scales at 13, 7, 3.5, and 2.3 mm on March 22 (VLBI). We found that the degree of linear polarization increases from 10% to 13% at 13 mm to 350 mum and the EVPAs at all observing frequencies are parallel within < $10^{\circ}$ to the direction of the jet at mas scale, implying that the integrated magnetic fields are perpendicular to the jet in the innermost regions. We also found that the Faraday rotation measures RM are in a range of $-6.5{\times}102{\sim}-2.7{\times}103$ rad m-2 between 13 and 3.5 mm, and are scaled as a function of wavelength:| {RM}| ${\backslash}propto$ {lambda }-2.2. These results indicate that the millimeter and sub-millimeter polarization emission are generated in the compact jet within 1 mas scale and affected by a Faraday screen in or in the close proximity of the jet.

This paper presents a fully synthesizable low power interconnect bus for millimeter-scale wireless sensor nodes. A segmented ring bus topology minimizes the required chip real estate with low input/output pad count for ultra-small form factors. By avoiding the conventional open drain-based solution, the bus can be fully synthesizable. Low power is achieved by obviating a need for local oscillators in member nodes. Also, aggressive power gating allows low-power standby mode with only 53 gates powered on. An integrated wakeup scheme is compatible with a power management unit that has nW standby mode. A 3-module system including the bus is fabricated in a 180 nm process. The entire system consumes 8 nW in standby mode, and the bus achieves 17.5 pJ/bit/chip.
The lack of short baselines, referred to as the short-spacing problem (SSP), is a well-known limitation of the performance of radio interferometers, causing a reduction of the flux detected from source structure on large angular scales. The very large number of antennas operated in the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) generates situations for which the impact of the SSP takes a complex form, not simply measurable by a single number, such as the maximal recoverable scale. In particular, extended antenna configurations, complemented by a small group of closeby antennas at the centre of the array, may result in a double-humped baseline distribution with a significant gap between the two groups. In such cases one should adopt as the effective maximal recoverable scale the one associated with the extended array and use only the central array to recover missing flux, as one would do with single dish or ACA (Atacama Compact Array) observations. The impact of the missing baselines can be very important and may easily be underestimated, or even overlooked. The present study uses ALMA archival data of the 29SiO(8-7) line emission of the AGB star W Hydrae for a demonstration. A critical discussion of the reliability of the observations away from the star is presented together with comments of a broader scope. Properties of the circumstellar envelope of W Hya within ~15 au from the star, many of which are not mentioned in the published literature, are briefly described and compared with R Doradus, an AGB star having properties very similar to W Hya.
As a part of micro engine development feasibility estimation was done through fabrication and test of down scaled combustor and MEMS fabricated spark electrode. In an experimental observation of the down scaled combustion phenomena where flame propagation was observed by optical method and pressure change in combustor which gives the information about the reaction generated thermal energy was recorded and analyzed. Optimal combustor scale was derived to be about 2mm considering increased heat loss effect and thermal energy generation capability. Through the fabrication and discharge test of MEMS electrode effects of electrode width and gap was investigated. Electrode was fabricated by thick PR mold and electroplating. From the result discharge voltage characteristic in sub millimeter scale electrode having thickness of $40{\mu}m$ was obtained. From the result base technology for design and fabrication of micro engine was obtained.
Cu, which exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in underground environments, has been investigated as a canister material for use in the deep geological disposal of spent nuclear fuels. In this study, the technical viability of atmospheric plasma spraying for producing Cu-coated canisters was investigated. A high-purity Cu film (millimeter scale) was deposited onto a stainless-steel substrate using a plasma gun with a shroud structure. Potentiodynamic polarization studies revealed that the Cu film exhibited a sufficiently low corrosion rate in the groundwater electrolyte. In addition, no pitting corrosion was observed on the Cu film surface after accelerated corrosion studies. A prototype cylindrical Cu film was fabricated on a 1/20 scale on a stainless-steel tube to demonstrate the scalability of atmospheric plasma spraying in producing Cu-coated canisters.
