  • Cracks in the concrete structure are known to develope by various mechani는, including an alkali-aggregate reaction. The alkali-silicate reaction between aggregates and cement is studied using polarized microscope, electron probe microanalyser and electron microscope. Metamorphosed, biaxial quartz and feldspars grains appear to have reacted readily with alkali from cement. For a given mineral, fine-grained minerals tend to react readily over the coarse-grained ones. A chemical analysis shows that the elements K, Na, Ca, and Si migrated, in most cases, fro the portion of h호 concentration to the low, Some clay minerals, including smectite and illite are newly formed as one of the reaction products. The continual expansion and shrinkage of the expandible clay minerals, probably due to repeated absorption and loss of water within the structure, plays an important role in the development of cracks within the concrete structure.

  • We explored the dynamic motions and the lateral equilibrium positions of an elastic capsule in channel flow at moderate Reynolds number varying Re, aspect ratio, size ratio, membrane stretching and bending coefficient. The transition of tank-treading/swinging to tumbling motion was observed in the simulations and the transition of dynamic motions for capsules resulted in different trend of the variation in the lateral equilibrium positions. Though other conditions were similar, the capsule with tumbling motion migrated closer to the wall than that with tank-treading motion.

  • We report and discuss molecular and isotopic properties of hydrate-bound gases from 55 samples and void gases from 494 samples collected during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 204 at Hydrate Ridge offshore Oregon. Gas hydrates appear to crystallize in sediments from two end-member gas sources (deep allochthonous and in situ) as mixtures of different proportions. In an area of high gas flux at the Southern Summit of the ridge (Sites 1248-1250), shallow (0-40 meters below the seafloor (mbsf)) gas hydrates are composed of mainly allochthonous mixed microbial and thermogenic methane and a small portion of thermogenic C2+ gases, which migrated vertically and laterally from as deep as 2-2.5 km depths. In contrast, deep (50-105 mbsf) gas hydrates at the Southern Summit (Sites 1248 and 1250) and on the flanks of the ridge (Sites 1244-1247) crystallize mainly from microbial methane and ethane generated dominantly in situ. A small contribution of allochthonous gas may also be present at sites where geologic and tectonic settings favor vertical gas migration from greater depth (e.g., Site 1244).

  • The vertical distribution and diurnal migration of Evadne nordmanii has been studied at different stations in the Irish Sea. There are many reports that the migrations of planktonic animals tend to be hampered by thermoclines and haloclines. Physical and chemical factors were compared with vertical distribution and diurnal migrations of the animal. Evadne must be essentially an epiplanktonic form with the ability to endure strong light intensity. The animals generally migrated to the very surface layer from their shallow day strata with the decreased of light intensity. During the night their distribution seems rather random or even throughout all the layers, with a tendency to concentrate at the bottom layers, when the water was homogeneous physically and chemically. E. nordmanii may penetrate minor thermoclines and haloclines, but they may avoid chemically distinct waters or possibly currents.

  • Dyeing and washing fastness properties of polyurethane-impregnated polyester (PU-impregnated PET), and the distribution of two disperse dyes between PET and PU film were studied to investigate the effect of PU portion to exhaustion and washing fastness. Dyeing properties of PU-impregnated PET were quite different with those of PET: PU-impregnated PET absorbed disperse dye linearly from the early stage of dyeing to equilibrium, and it exhibited excellent build-up property up to 4 %owf dyeing. The absorbed dye on PU film at early dyeing stage migrated to more substantive PET at the temperature higher than $115^{\circ}C$. The amount of exhausted dye on PET portion was larger than on PU film and the distribution ratio was $2.08{\sim}2.34$. The grade of washing fastness of PU-impregnated PET was the same as or lower by $0.5{\sim}1$ grade than PU film whose washing fastness was lower by $0.5{\sim}1$ than PET.

  • Creativity is a long cherished and widely studied aspect of human behavior that allows us to re-invent the familiar, and to imagine the new. Computational creativity (CC) is a newly burgeoning area of creativity research that brings together academics and practitioners from diverse disciplines, genres and modalities, to explore the potential of computers to be autonomously creative, or to collaborate as co-creators with people. We describe here an architecture for creative Web services that will act as a force magnifier for CC, both for academic research, and for the effective deployment of real CC applications in industry. For researchers, this service-oriented architecture supports the pooling of technologies in a robust interoperable framework, in which CC models are conceived, developed and migrated from lab settings to an industrial strength platform. Industry developers, for their part, will be able to exploit novel results of CC research in a robust, low-risk form, without having to re-implement algorithms from a quickly moving field. We illustrate the architecture with the first of a growing set of creative Web services that provide robust figurative language processing on demand.

  • Parallel Genetic Algorithms partition the whole population into several sub-populations and search the optimal solution by exchanging the information each others periodically. Distributed Genetic Algorithm, one of Parallel Genetic Algorithms, divides a large population into several sub-populations and executes the traditional Genetic Algorithm on each sub-population independently. And periodically promising individuals selected from sub-populations are migrated by following the migration interval and migration rate to different sub-populations. In this paper, for the Travelling Salesman Problems, we analyze and compare with Distributed Genetic Algorithms using different Genetic Algorithms and using same Genetic Algorithms on each separated sub-population The simulation result shows that using different Genetic Algorithms obtains better results than using same Genetic Algorithms in Distributed Genetic Algorithms. This results look like the property of rapidly searching the approximated optima and keeping the variety of solution make interaction in different Genetic Algorithms.

  • Between 40,000 and 60,000 liters of light oil were spilled when an underground pipe broke at a newly constructed landfill site in coastal area, Korea. Methods were presented to examine the subsurface distribution of the contaminants in hydrocarbon-contaminated soil. As results, large quantities of oil and grease were found to have migrated horizontally at the site. Oil and grease plume at concentrations of 38-88 mg/kg was formed horizontally through silty sand with gravel fill and the vertical movement of the contaminants was thought to be limited to groundwater level between 2 and 4 m corresponding to sea water level. Right after finding the leakage area, the early action of excavation and pumping out the mixture of groundwater and oil was taken and it was proved to be very effective for preventing further contamination. Two months after the leakage, oil and grease in sea water sample near contaminated area was not detectable.

  • Spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a common condition that often leads to death or disability. Accurate prediction of the outcome and decisions regarding the treatment of ICH patients are important issues. We report a case of thalamic hemorrhage with an intraventricular hemorrhage that was suddenly migrated into the third and fourth ventricles in its entirety 8 hours after symptom onset. To our knowledge, this case is the first report of spontaneous migration of thalamic ICH into ventricles, and we suggest a possible mechanism for this case with a brief review of the literature.

  • The main aim this paper is to investigate the "Bayt al-Hikma" ("The House of Wisdom"), an important medieval centre for translation and science. In this paper, the author attempts to define the establishment, tasks and development of this institution and its place in medieval civilization. In addition, considerable attention is given to the scientific activity of the Central Asian scholars in Baghdad, who migrated there when caliph al-Ma'mun shifted his court from Marw to Baghdad in 819 CE. The paper describes "Bayt al-Hikma" as an important institution for translation and science and describes some of the Central Asian scholars' activities in Baghdad. Despite its brevity, this short overview shows that these scholars had an important influence on the development of medieval sciences.
