In this paper, for improving the performance of selecting and the sensitivity of the L-Band microwave radiometer for remote sensing of soil-moisture, the harmonic-suppressed hairpin bandpass filter is described. As the harmonic frequencies of the SIR can be controlled by the ratio of the impedance and electrical length, SIRs are used in the hairpin BPF for suppressing harmonics. Manufactured harmonic-suppressed hairpin BPF has the SIRs of three types and its harmonic is suppressed under 35 [dB] until 5 times of the center frequency of 1390 [MHz].
This paper presents a flexible low-profile antenna sensor for fatigue crack detection and monitoring. The sensor was inspired by the sense of pain in bio-systems as a protection mechanism. Because the antenna sensor does not need wiring for power supply or data transmission, it is an ideal candidate as sensing elements for the implementation of engineering sensor skins with a dense sensor distribution. Based on the principle of microstrip patch antenna, the antenna sensor is essentially an electromagnetic cavity that radiates at certain resonant frequencies. By implementing a metallic structure as the ground plane of the antenna sensor, crack development in the metallic structure due to fatigue loading can be detected from the resonant frequency shift of the antenna sensor. A monostatic microwave radar system was developed to interrogate the antenna sensor remotely. Fabrication and characterization of the antenna sensor for crack monitoring as well as the implementation of the remote interrogation system are presented.

Special problem emphasized by specialists in the field of analyzing the heat interchanges in the system ocean-atmosphere (SOA) is a necessity of determination of the near-surface atmospheric temperature, which can be only indirectly connected with characteristics of the SOA natural microwave radiation measured from satellites. That is why, the following dilemma is not obvious, but interesting and promised: what is better - to use the satellite methods for retrieving the partial parameters of the SOA or for analysis its state as a whole. To our opinion, this task is similar to the idea recognized by specialists engaged in the heat infrared region (8-12 mcm) of electromagnetic spectrum and its applications, where an intensity of natural infrared radiation (effective radiation) is used as the inherent property (the attribute) of the SOA heat balance. Here we studied important aspects of this problem: a) what medium initiates a heat transfer in the SOA and disturbs its heat balance - the ocean or the atmosphere b) what SOA parameters directly influence on its natural microwave radiation intensity (brightness temperature) measured from satellites? We relate these processes mainly to the synoptic range of time scales enriched by various events in the SOA interface such as the mid-latitude and tropical cyclones.
The Arctic environment is sensitive to change of sea-ice distribution. The increase and decrease of sea ice work to an index of globe warming progress. In order to predict the progress of hereafter earth global warming, continuous monitoring regarding a change of the sea ice area in the Arctic should be performed. The remote sensing based on an artificial satellite is most effective on the North Pole. The sea ice observation using a passive microwave sensor has been continued from 1970's. The determination of sea ice extent and ice type is one of the great successes of the passive microwave imagers. In this paper, to investigate the seasonal and inter-annual variation of sea-ice distribution we used here the sea ice data from July 2002 to May 2009 around the Arctic within $60^{\circ}N$ for the AMSR-E 12.5km sea-ice concentration, a passive microwave sensor. From an early analysis of these data, the arctic sea-ice extent has been steadily decreasing at a rate of about 3.1%, accounting for about $2{\times}10^5\;km^2$, which was calculated for the sea-ice cover reaching its minimum extent at the end of each summer. It is also revealed that this trend corresponds to a decline in the multi-year ice that is affected mainly by summer sea surface and air temperature increases. The extent of younger and thinner (first-year) ice decreased to the 2007 minimum, but rapidly recovered in 2008 and 2009 due to the dramatic loss in 2007. Seasonal variations of the sea-ice extent show significant year-to-year variation in the seasons of January-March in the Barents and Labrador seas and August-October in the region from the East Siberian and Chukchi seas to the North Pole. The spatial distribution of multi-year ice (7-year old) indicates that the perennial ice fraction has rapidly shrunk recently out of the East Siberian, Laptev, and Kara seas to the high region of the Arctic within the last seven years and the Northeast Passage could become open year-round in near future.

Aerosol indirect radiative forcing of climate change is considered the most uncertain forcing of climate change over the industrial period, despite numerous studies demonstrating such modification of cloud properties and several studies quantifying resulting changes in shortwave radiative fluxes. Detection of this effect is made difficult by the large inherent variability in cloud liquid water path (LWP): the dominant controlling influence of LWP on optical depth and albedo masks any aerosol influences. Here we have used ground-based remote sensing of cloud optical depth (${\tau}_c$) by narrowband radiometry and LWP by microwave radiometry to determine the dependence of optical depth on LWP, thereby permitting examination of aerosol influence. The method is limited to complete overcast conditions with liquid-phase single layer clouds, as determined mainly by millimeter wave cloud radar. The results demonstrate substantial (factor of 2) day-to-day variation in cloud drop effective radius at the ARM Southern Great Plains site that is weakly associated with variation in aerosol loading as characterized by light-scattering coefficient at the surface. The substantial scatter suggests the importance of meteorological influences on cloud drop size as well, which should be analyzed in the further intensive studies. Meanwhile, it is notable that the decrease in cloud drop effective radius results in marked increase in cloud albedo.

Sea ice covers wide area in Terra Nova Bay in East Antarctica where the Jangbogo Antarctic Research Station was built in 2014, which affects greatly on the sailing of an icebreaker research vessel. In this study, we analyzed the optimum sea route and sailable period of the icebreaker to visit the Jangbogo Antarctic Research Station by using sea ice concentration data observed by passive microwave sensors such as Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) and Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder (SSMIS) for the last decade, and by using sea route of the Araon, an icebreaker of Republic of Korea, from 2010 to 2012. It is found that Araon sailed in the route of sea ice concentration up to 78%. Sailing speed of the Araon decreased due to increasing sea ice concentration. However, Araon maintained the speed close to the average speed for the entire sailing period (~11 kn) in the route of sea ice concentration up to 70%. Therefore, we confirm that the Araon can sail typically in the route which shows sea ice concentration below 70%. We derived annually available sailing period in recent 10 years for the sea route of the Araon in 2010, 2011 and 2012, which is defined as the period showing sea ice concentration below 70% through the route. Maximum sailable period was analyzed to be 61 and 62 days for the route of the Araon in 2010 and 2011, respectively. However, the typical sailing in the routes was unavailable in some years because sea ice concentration was higher than 70% through the routes. Meanwhile, the sailable period for the routes of the Araon in 2012 was observed in every year, which was a minimum of 15 days and is a maximum of 89 days. Therefore, we could suggest that optimum route of icebreaker to visit the Jangbogo Antarctic Research Station is the route of the Araon in 2012. High resolution images from SAR or optical sensors are necessary to investigate sea ice condition near shoreline of Jangbogo research station due to several kilometers of low resolution of sea ice concentration.

Quantitative variability of AMSR2 (Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2) soil moisture data shows that the remotely sensed soil moisture is underestimated during Spring and Winter seasons and is overestimated during Summer and Fall seasons. Therefore the bias correction of the remotely sensed data is essential for the purpose of water resource management. To enhance their applicability, the bias of AMSR2 soil moisture data was corrected using ground observation data at Cheorwon Chuncheon, Suwon, Cheongju, Jeonju, and Jinju sites. Test statistics demonstrated that the correlation coefficient R is improved from 0.107~0.328 to 0.286~0.559 and RMSE is improved from 9.46~14.36 % to 5.38~9.62 %. Bias correction using ground network data improved the applicability of remotely sensed soil moisture data.

A satellite scatterometer is a microwave radar sensor used to measure the backscattering at a sea surface. This instrument transmits radar pulses to the sea surface and measure the radar energy reflected back towards the source. Changes in wind velocity make sea surface roughness change and then affect on backscattered power. This gives us information of sea surface wind speed. Directions of wind vectors are acquired by multiple, collocated, and nearly simultaneous measurements. It should be noted that the scatterometer observes not the wind directly but the wind stress vector relative to the surface current. This suggests the possibility that the satellite scatterometer winds can include the effect of the surface current. This study shows the evidence that scatterometer measure surface wind stress, not surface winds and presents the velocity structure of oceanic warm and cold eddies.
Synthetic Aperture Radar(SAR) is an active microwave instrument that performs high-resolution observation under almost all weather condition. Research and algorithms have been proposed to process radar signal and to increase the quality of SAR products. In fact, many complicated steps are involved in order to generate a SAR image product. The purpose of this paper is to derive quality assessment procedures and define important test parameters in each procedure inside a SAR processor. Thus those test parameter values indicate the quality of SAR image products and verify the processor's performance. Moreover, required procedures to correct and handle errors which are indicated during the assessment are also presented.
Real-time rainfall monitoring is of great practical importance over the highly populated Indochina area, which is prone to natural disasters, in particular in association with rainfall. With the goal of d etermining near real-time half-hourlyrain estimates from satellite, the three-layer, artificial neural networks (ANN) approach was used to train the brightness temperatures at 6.7, 11, and $12-{\mu}m$ channels of the Japanese geostationary satellite MTSAT against passive microwavebased rain rates from Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Microwave Imager (TMI) and TRMM Precipitation Radar (PR) data for the June-September 2005 period. The developed model was applied to the MTSAT data for the June-September 2006 period. The results demonstrate that the developed algorithm is comparable to the PERSIANN (Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information using Artificial Neural Networks) results and can be used for flood monitoring across the Indochina area on a half-hourly time scale.
