  • As compared with conventional sintering, rapid heating in microwave system could enhance sinterability and final properties of alumina with a very short sintering time. In this study microwave sintering was performed using zirconia brick as a reaction chamber which was positioned in a 2.45 GHz(700 W) multimode microwave cavity. Microwave-sintered alumina showed high density and smaller grain size than conventionally sintered alumina because the ratio of densification rate/grain growth rate was increased by rapid heating.

  • A preliminary study for energy efficient soil heating and contaminant removal using microwave was conducted. Soils sampled from floodplain were heated with microwave oven, and soil heating property and energy efficiency were compared to those heated with electrical furnace. In addition the effects of water, soil organic matter, and contaminated diesel on soil heating with microwave were investigated. Even though the electrical power consumption of electrical furnace and microwave oven were similar, temperature of soil heated with microwave oven was significantly higher than that of soil heated with electrical furnace. The increase of soil moisture content delays the raise of soil temperature during heating it with microwave oven. However, the effects of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) (<10%) in contaminated soil matrix and small amount of soil organic matter (<5%) on the increase of soil temperature by microwave were not significant. Further studies for contaminated soils with different texture using pilot scale microwave reactor are required for application of this technique in the field.

대두의 Phytate 함량에 미치는 microwave heating의 영향 (Effect of microwave heating on the content of phytic acid and phosphorus in soybeans)

  • 대두에 함유된 영양저해인자의 하나인 phytic acid를 감소시키기 위해 일정시간 침지시킨 대두를 microwave로 가열처리하여 phytic acid 및 phosphorus의 함량 변화를 관찰하였다. 단원콩, 만리콩 및 Amsoy의 phytic acid 함량은 각각 탈지대두 1 g중에 19.19 mg, 18.38 mg 및 16.73 mg 함유되어 있었다. 가열시간이 길어짐에 따라 콩에 함유된 phytic acid 및 phytate phosphorus 함량은 감소하는 경향을 보여서, 5분 가열시에 단원콩, 만리콩 및 Amsoy의 phytic acid 감소율은 각각 26.29%, 24.85%, 23.72%이었다. 단원콩을 12에서 30분간 autoclaving 처리하였을때 phytic acid 및 phytate phosphorus의 감소율은 18.62%와 16.95%로 microwave로 5분 처리하였을 때가 훨씬 효과적이었다. 대두의 수분함량과 microwave 가열효과와의 관계는 수분함량이 낮을수록 phytic acid의 감소 효과가 컸다. 몇가지 염용액에 12시간 침지시킨후 4분간 가열처리시 phytic acid의 감소율은 2.5% NaCl에서 24.52%, 2% $NaHCO_3$에서 26.62%, 혼합 염용액(M.S.S.)에서 28.47%로 증류수의 21.53%보다 약간 높게 나타났으며, phytate phosphorus 감소율 또한 위의 세가지 염용액에서 26.17%, 24.64% 및 26.60%로서 증류수의 19.73%보다 약간 더 효과가 있는 것으로 나타났다.

  • The silver thick film has been used in many industries such as display, chip, solar cell, automobile, and decoration with conventional heating. The silver thick film is fired with optimal time and temperature. However, decreasing the fabrication time is required due to high production power. Furthermore, there is a problem that silver in electrode is diffused throughout any substrates. For inhibiting the Ag diffusion and long fabrication time we considered a microwave heating. We investigated firing of silver thick film with conventional and microwave heating. The temperature of substrate was measured by thermal paper and the temperature of substrate was under $100\;^{\circ}C$ The shrinkage of electrode was measured with optical microscopy and optical profilometry. The shrinkage of electrode heat treated with microwave for 5min was similar to the that fired by the conventional heating for several hours. After firing by two types of heating, the diffusion of silver was determined using a optical microscope. The microstructure of sintered silver thick film was observed by SEM. Based on our results, the microwave heating should be a candidate heating source for the fabrication electronic devices in terms of saving the tact time and preventing the contamination of substrate.

  • The pyrolytic behavior of waste tire under microwave heating was investigated. Experiments were conducted using a lab- and bench-scale system to delineate the effects of microwave output power on the response. As the results of experiments, it was found that as the microwave output power was increased between 0.84 and 3.04 kW/kg, the oil yield and required time rapidly increased and decreased, respectively. With further increase of the microwave output power, the oil yield and required time did not change significantly.

  • Microwaves are high frequency radiation capable of generating very rapid, uniform and efficient heating of textile material. Microwave heated dyeing of polyester fabric was tried with different solvent systems, irradiation time and dye concentration. Microwave fixation methods were used with 100% water,30% urea, EG and DMF, respectively, pad-baths in which the padded fabrics were exposed over a heated or boiling water bath to maintain sufficient moisture content during irradiation. In order to ascertain the relation between the dyeing property of polyester fabric and the microwave irradiation condition caused by microwave heating, the K/S values and fastness properties of dyed fabrics such as light, washing and sublimation fastness were measured.

  • This presentation shows energy-efficiency of microwave-accelerated esterification of free fatty acid with a heterogeneous catalyst by net microwave power measurement. In the reaction condition of 5wt% sulfated zirconia and 1:20 molar ratio of oil to methanol at $60^{\circ}C$ and atmospheric pressure, more than 90% conversion of the esterification was achieved in 20 minutes by microwave heating, while it took about 130 minutes by conventional heating. Electric energy consumption for the microwave heating in this accelerated esterification was only 67% of estimated minimum heat energy demand because of significantly reduced reaction time.

  • A chemical batch tests were conducted to evaluate if microwave heating enhances phosphorous release from waste activated sludge (WAS) at pH 2.5, 5, 7, 9 and 11. Polyphosphate-accumulating organisms have a unique physiological feature, which releases intracellular polyphosphate granules when they are exposed under high temperature environments. Microwave irradiation was found to encourage large amount of phosphorus release from WAS, depending on pH and temperature conditions. Most of phosphorus was released below $59^{\circ}C$ within 30 min. A marked increase in phosphorus release was observed under alkaline or acidic conditions. However, based on control tests for phosphorus release under different pH conditions without microwave heating, the largest amount of phosphorus released by microwave irradiation was found at pH 7, followed by 5, 9, 11. On the other hand, crystallization was conducted to obtain magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP) from phosphate released by microwave heating at pH 7. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that the recovered crystalline materials were MAP. MAP is an environmentally friendly fertilizer, which slowly releases ammonia and phosphorus in response to the demand of plant root. Thus, the recovered MAP as a phosphate fertilizer is fully expected to play a important role in the reduction of agricultural non-point pollution.

동결 및 마이크로파 가열이 멥쌀가루겔 및 인절미의 조직 특성에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Freezing and Microwave Heating on the Textural Characteristics of Nonwaxy Rice Flour Gels and Rice Cake(Injolmi))

  • The textural characteristics of nonxaxy rice flour gels and rice cake(Injolmi) with different water contents and additives were evaluated after freezing and microwave heating. As moisture content of rice flour gels increased from 45% to 55%, its hardness and gumminess decreased, but adhesive and cohesiveness had no significant difference. Microwave heating did not markedly affect the texture but frozen storage was very effective to prevent the hardening of products. Hardness of reheated rice gels increased more rapidly in non-packaged sample than in PE wrap film and affected by storage time of 24hrs at 20$^{\circ}C$. As sugar content of rice flour gels increased from 0% to 10%, its hardness, adhesiveness, and gumminess decreased, while cohesiveness did not change.

  • The objective of this study is to develop the prototype system for microwave heating in a manufacture process of alkali activated Hwangtoh binder as replacement materials for the cement in concrete. In order to achieve this, four research phases are carried out as follows: 1) establishment of a system concept 2) deduction of a system element 3) design of the entire system 4) making of the prototype system for microwave heating.
