Recently, development of Al-based alloys for high mechanical performance has been an important issue in automotive industry. The present study focused on the design of a high strength Al-based alloy for rheo-diecasting. The research was based on thermodynamic calculation and experimentals to optimize the alloy compositions. Two important considerations were carried out: i) to obtain uniform slurry with fine and globular microstructures for rheo-diecasting, ii) to be strengthend by T6 heat treatment. In order to evaluate the effect of Si content on the slurry microstructure and castability, thermodynamic calculation and fluidity test were carried out. The effects of various alloying components, such as Mg, Cu and Zn, on age hardenability were also investigated. The mechanical properties of the rheo-diecasting products using the newly developed alloy are 324MPa in tensile strength, 289MPa in yield strength, and 11.2% in elongation after T6 heat treatment.

Alkali-activated slag concretes are being extensively researched because of its potential sustainability-related benefits. For such concretes to be implemented in large scale concrete applications such as infrastructural and building elements, it is essential to understand its early and long-term performance characteristics vis-a'-vis conventional ordinary portland cement (OPC) based concretes. This paper presents a comprehensive study of the property and performance features including early-age isothermal calorimetric response, compressive strength development with time, microstructural features such as the pore volume and representative pore size, and accelerated chloride transport resistance of OPC and alkali-activated binder systems. Slag mixtures activated using sodium silicate solution ($SiO_2$-to-$Na_2O$ ratio or $M_s$ of 1-2) to provide a total alkalinity of 0.05 ($Na_2O$-to-binder ratio) are compared with OPC mixtures with and without partial cement replacement with Class F fly ash (20 % by mass) or silica fume (6 % by mass). Major similarities are noted between these binder systems for: (1) calorimetric response with respect to the presence of features even though the locations and peaks vary based on $M_s$, (2) compressive strength and its development, (3) total porosity and pore size, and (4) rapid chloride permeability and non-steady state migration coefficients. Moreover, electrical impedance based circuit models are used to bring out the microstructural features (resistance of the connected pores, and capacitances of the solid phase and pore-solid interface) that are similar in conventional OPC and alkali-activated slag concretes. This study thus demonstrates that performance-equivalent alkali-activated slag systems that are more sustainable from energy and environmental standpoints can be proportioned.
The surfaces of titanium specimens were modified by immersion in calcium phosphate buffered solutions (pH 5.8, 7.0, 8.0) for 10 days and simulated body fluid(SBF) for 30 days by turns. The modified surfaces were characterized using scanning electron microscopy(SEM), X-ray diffractometery(XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer(FT-IR), and compared with specimen immersed in only SBF. The results indicated that the immersion in calcium phosphate buffered solutions accelerated the formation of the surface films. The formed layer showed granular shaped microstructure, and recognized as calcium phosphate such as a hydroxyapatite(HA) or a $\beta$-tri-calcium phosphate($\beta$-TCP). The thickness of the layer increased of the buffered solutions in order of pH 8.0, 7.0 and 5.8 and the density increased in order of pH 7.0, 8.0 and 5.8.
Over the past decade, liquid crystalline epoxy (LCER) has attracted much attention as a promising matrix for the development of efficient heat dissipation materials. This study presents a comprehensive study including synthesis, preparation and chacterization of polymer/inorganic composites using typical 4,4-diglycidyloxybiphenyl (DP) epoxy among LECR. To confirm the thermal conductivity of composite materials, we have prepared composite samples composed of epoxy resin and single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) as a filler. In particular, DP composites exhibit higher thermal conductivity than commercial epoxy composites that use the same type of filler due to the highly ordered microstructure of the LCER. In addition, the thermal conductivity of the DP composite can be controlled by controlling the amount of filler. In particular, the DP composite containing a SWCNT content of 50 wt% has the highest thermal conductivity of 2.008 W/mK.
High $J_c$ over 1 $MA/cm^2$ YBCO film has been successfully prepared using nitrate precursors by spray pyrolysis method. Aerosol drolpets generated using a concentric spray nozzle were directly sprayed on a $LaAlO_3$(100) single crystal substrate. The cation ratio of precursor solution was Y:Ba:Cu=1:2.65:1.35. The distance between nozzle and substrate was 15 cm. Deposition temperature was ranging from $750^{\circ}C\;to\;800^{\circ}C$. Deposition pressure was 100 Torr, and oxygen partial pressure was varied from 10 Torr to 50 Torr. The microstructure, phase formation, texture development and superconducting properties of deposited films were largely changed with oxygen partial pressure. Deposited films showed a texture with(001) planes parallel to substrate plane. High quality film was obtained when film was deposited at $760^{\circ}C$ with an oxygen partial pressure of 30 Torr. The critical current density($J_c$) of the YBCO film was 1.75 $MA/cm^2$ at 77 K and self-field.

For the development of a new creep test technique, the availability of SP-Creep test is discussed for 1Cr-0.5Mo boiler header material. And some results are also compared with those of 2.25Cr- 1Mo steel which widely uses as boiler superheater tube. The results can be summarized as follows. The load exponents(n) obtained by SP-Creep test for 1Cr-0.5Mo steel are decreased with increasing creep temperature and the values are 15.67, 13.89, and 17.13 at 550$^{circ}C$ ,575$^{circ}C$ and 600$^{circ}C$, respectively. The temperature dependence of the load exponent is given by n = 107.19 - 0.1108T. This reason that load exponents show the extensive range of 10∼16 is attributed to the fine carbide such as M$_{23}$C$_{6}$ in lath tempered martensitic structures. At the same creep condition, the secondary creep rate of 1Cr-0.5Mo steel is lower than the 2.25Cr-1Mo steel1 due to the strengthening microstructure composed by normalizing and tempering treatments. Through a SEM observation, it can be summarized that the primary, secondary, and tertiary creep regions of SP-Creep specimen are corresponding to plastic bending, plastic membrane stretching, and plastic instability regions among the deformation behavior of four steps in SP test, respectively.y.
This study investigated the effect of bonding temperature and holding time on microstructures and mechanical properties of diffusion bonded joint of Haynes230. The diffusion bonds were performed at the temperature of 950, 1050, and $1150^{\circ}C$ for holding times of 30, 60, 120 and 240 minutes at a pressure of 4MPa under high vacuum condition. The amount of non-bonded area and void observed in the bonded interface decreased with increasing bonding temperature and holding time. Cr-rich precipitates at the linear interface region restrained grain migration at $950^{\circ}C$ and $1050^{\circ}C$. However, the grain migration was observed in spite of short holding time due to the dissolution of precipitates to base metal in the interface region at $1150^{\circ}C$. Three types of the fracture surface were observed after tensile test. The region where the coalesce and migration of grain occurred much showed high fracture load because of base metal fracture whereas the region where those did less due to the precipitates demonstrated low fracture load because of interface fracture. The expected fracture load could be derived with the value of fracture area of base metal ($A_{BF}$) and interface ($A_{IF}$), $Load=201A_{BF}+153A_{IF}$. Based on this equation, strength of base metal and interface fracture were calculated as 201MPa and 153MPa, respectively.
In order to provide with fundamental data of the wrought Mg alloy for press forging, the effect of annealing temperature on the microstructure, texture development and tensile properties is studied in a commercial AZ31B Mg alloy sheet. Basal texture i.e. $(0001){\pm}5^{\circ}$[21$\bar{3}$0] is developed in a commercial AZ31B Mg sheet, and the texture is not changed considerably by annealing over $400^{\circ}C{\times}30min$, while (10$\bar{3}$0) component with high intensity can be observed due to abnormal grain growth. When the sheet is tensile-deformed with RD, $45^{\circ}$ and TD directions at room temperature, fracture strains are given by 25.8, 21.4 and 11.9% in the order of RD, $45^{\circ}$ and TD directions, respectively. With increasing annealing temperature up to $450^{\circ}C{\times}30min$, little change in mean grain size can be revealed by annealing below $300^{\circ}C{\times}30min$ but an abnormal grain growth, where some grains become significantly coarser than the rest, occurs by annealing above $400^{\circ}C{\times}30min$. The maximum tensile strain of around 25% is obtained by annealing below $300^{\circ}C{\times}30min$, but it is abruptly decreased to 16% by annealing above $400^{\circ}C{\times}30min$ owing to intergranular fracture of abnormal grown grains.
The $UO_2$ pellets are usually sintered under hydrogen gas atmosphere. Hydrogen gas may cause unexpected early failure of the refractory bricks in the sintering furnace. In this work, nitrogen was mixed with hydrogen to investigate the effect of nitrogen gas on a failure machanism of the refractory bricks and on the microstructure of the $UO_2$ pellet. The hydrogen-nitrogen mixed gas experiments show that the larger nitrogen the mixed gas contains, the less the refractory materials are reduced by hydrogen. The weight loss measurements at $1400^{\circ}C$ for fire clay and chamotte refractories containing high content of $SiO_2$ indicate that the weight loss rate for the mixed gas is about half of that for the hydrogen gas. Based on the thermochemical analyses, it is proposed that the weight loss is caused by hydrogen-induced reduction of free $SiO_2$ and/or $SiO_2$ bonded to $Al_2O_3$ in the fire clay and chamotte refractories. However, the retardation of the hydrogen-induced $SiO_2$ reduction rate under the mixed gas atmosphere may be due to the reduction of the surface reaction rate between hydrogen gas and refractory materials in proportion to volume fraction of nitrogen gas in the mixed gas. On the other hand, the mixed gas experiments show that the test data for $UO_2$ pellet still meet the related specification values, even if there exists a slight difference in the pellet microstructural parameters between the cases of the mixed gas and the hydrogen gas.

We investigated the electrochemical properties and microstructure on the various argon deposition pressure $(P_{Ar})$ and the low annealing temperature $(400^{\circ}C)$ of $LiCoO_2$ cathodes, which deposited by R.F. magnetron sputtering. The microsuucture and composition of Lico02 thin film was changed as a function of $P_{Ar}$. The capacity and electrochemical properties were improved with Ph of $LiCoO_2$ thin films. The cycling reversibility and stability of thin film batteries were measured by cyclic voltammetry and the constant current charge-discharge. The physical properties of cathode films were analyzed by ICP-AES, XRD, SEM and AFM for composition, crystallization and surface morphology.
