  • Development of high strength steel requires proper understanding of hydrogen behavior since the higher the steel strength the greater the susceptibility of hydrogen assisted cracking. This paper provides a brief but broad overview on hydrogen entry and transport behavior of high-strength ferritic steels. First of all, hydrogen absorption, diffusion and trapping mechanism of the steels are briefly introduced. Secondly, several experimental methods for analyzing the physical/chemical nature of hydrogen uptake and transport in the steels are reviewed. Among the methods, electrochemical permeation technique utilized widely for evaluating the hydrogen diffusion and trapping behavior in metals and alloys is mainly discussed. Moreover, a modified permeation technique accommodating the externally applied load and its application to a variety of steels are intensively explored. Indeed, successful utilization of the modified permeation technique equipped with a constant load testing device leads to significant academic progress on the hydrogen assisted cracking (HAC) phenomenon of the steels. In order to show how the external and/or residual stress affects mechanical instability of steel due to hydrogen ingress, the relationship among the microstructure, hydrogen permeation, and HAC susceptibility is briefly introduced.

  • The properties of pyrolytic carbon (PyC) deposited from $C_2H_2$ and a mixture of $C_2H_2/C_3H_6$ on $ZrO_2$ particles in a fluidized bed reactor were studied by adjusting the deposition temperature, reactant concentration, and the total gas flow rate. The effect of the deposition parameters on the properties of PyC was investigated by analyzing the microstructure and density change. The density could be varied from $1.0\;g/cm^3$ to $2.2\;g/cm^3$ by controlling the deposition parameters. The density decreased and the deposition rate increased as the deposition temperature and reactant concentration increased. The PyC density was largely dependent on the deposition rate irrespective of the type of the reactant gas used.

  • Recently, interest in technology for eco-friendly energy harvesting has been increasing. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is one of the most fascinating materials that has been used in energy harvesting technology as well as micro-filters by utilizing an electrostatic effect. To enhance the performance of the electrostatic effect-based nanogenerator, most studies have focused on enlarging the contact surface area of the pair of materials with different triboelectric series. For this reason, one-dimensional nanofibers have been widely used recently. In order to realize practical energy-harvesting applications, PVDF nanofibers are modified by enlarging their contact surface area, modulating the microstructure of the surface, and maximizing the fraction of the ν-phase by incorporating additives or forming composites with inorganic nanoparticles. Among them, nanocomposite structures incorporating various nanoparticles have been widely investigated to increase the β-phase through strong hydrogen bonding or ion-dipole interactions with -CF2/CH2- of PVDF as well as to enhance the mechanical strength. In this study, we report the recent advances in the nanocomposite structure of PVDF nanofibers and inorganic nanopowders.

  • In order to improve the mechanical properties of tungsten at room and elevated temperature, hafnium carbide (HfC) reinforced tungsten matrix composites were prepared using the spark plasma sintering technique. The effect of HfC content on the compressive strength and flexural strength of the tungsten composites was investigated. Mechanical properties of the composites were also measured at elevated temperatures and their trends, with varying reinforcement volume fraction, were studied. The effect of reinforcement fraction on the thermal properties of the composites was investigated. The thermal conductivity and diffusivity of the composites decreased with increasing temperature and reinforcement volume fraction. An inherently low thermal conductivity of the reinforcement as well as interfacial losses was responsible for lower values of thermal conductivity of the composites. Values of coefficient of thermal expansion of the composites were observed to increase with HfC volume fraction.

  • TRISO coated particles with a ZrC barrier layer were fabricated by a fluidized-bed chemical vapor deposition (FBCVD) method for a use in a very high temperature gas-cooled reactor (VHTR). The ZrC layer was deposited by the reaction between $ZrCl_4$ and $CH_4$ gases at $1500^{\circ}C$ in an $Ar+H_2$ mixture gas. The amount of free carbon codeposited with in ZrC was changed by controlling the dilution gas ratio. Near-stoichiometric ZrC phase was also deposited when an impeller was employed to a $ZrCl_4$ vaporizer which effectively inhibited the agglomeration of $ZrCl_4$ powders during the deposition process. A near-stoichiometric ZrC coating layer had smooth surface while ZrC containing the free carbon had rough surface with tumulose structure. Surface roughness of ZrC increased further as the amount of free carbon increased.

  • A large grain YBCO bulk superconductor is fabricated by the top-seeded melt growth (TSMG) method. In the TSMG process, the seed crystal is placed on the top surface of a partially melted compact and therefore the seed crystal is frequently tilted during the melt process due to intrinsic unstable nature of Y211 particle +liquid phase mixture. In this work, we report the successful growth of single-domain YBCO bulk superconductors by a bottom-seeded melt growth (BSMG) method. Investigations on the trapped magnetic field and the microstructures of the synthesized specimens show that a bottom-seeded melt growth method has hardly affected on the crystal growth behavior, the microstructure development and the magnetic properties of the large grain YBCO bulk superconductors. The bottom-seeded melt growth method is clearly beneficial for the stable control of seed orientation through the melt process for the fabrication of a large grain YBCO bulk superconductor.

  • We fabricated Ni and Ni-W alloys for use as a substrate in YBCO coated conductor applications and evaluated the effect of W in Ni on texture, microstructure and surface morphology, and hardness of substrate. Pure Ni, Ni-2 at.%W, and Ni-5at.%W alloy substrates were prepared by plasma arc melting, cold rolling, and the recrystallization heat treatment at various temperature (700- 130$0^{\circ}C$). It was observed that Ni-W alloy substrates had stronger cube texture and maintained it at higher annealing temperature, compared to pure Ni substrate : The full-width at half- maximums of in-plane texture was 13.40$^{\circ}$ for Ni substrate and 4.42$^{\circ}$-5.57$^{\circ}$ for Ni-W substrate annealed at 100$0^{\circ}C$. In addition, it was observed that the Ni-W substrate had smaller grain size, shallower boundary depth, and higher hardness, compared to those of pure Ni substrate.

  • Functionally gradient materials(FGMs) generally consist of different material components, such as ceramics and metals. Continuous changes in their composition, microstructure, porositys, and so on result in gradients in the properties of FGMs. In this study AlN/Al-$Al_3$Ti FGM cubes were fabricated by the powder metallurgical process, and the characteristics of the FGMs were investigated. Powders of Mg and Ti mixed with Al in different ratios or the stack of the mixed powders having a stepwisely controlled compositional gradient from one plane to another were formed in a steel mold. The more the composition of Mg and sintering temperature are increased, the more the amount of AlN is formed. AlN and $Al_3$Ti distributed with continuously gradient composition were detected by XRD analysis and also revealed in optical microstructures, and microhardness tests.

  • In this study, the 95W heavy alloys of 3/7, 5/5 and 7/3 of Ni/Fe ratio were sintered at the temperature range between 1420 and $1480^{\circ}C$ for 1h and their microstructures were discussed for an effect of the ${\mu}$-phase $(Fe_7W_6)$ on the microstructure. The ${\mu}$-phase was observed in the only 95W-1.5Ni-3.5Fe alloy of 3/7 and it is thought to be formed and grown from the surface of the W particle. The W particle was surrounded with the ${\mu}$-phase and there were only the W particles and this phase without Ni-Fe-W matrix at the most part. The ${\mu}$-phase changed the interphase structure in the alloy and the grain growth of the W was suppressed because of interrupting the solution-reprecipitation of the W. The W content in the matrix was considered to be lowered due to the interruption of the solution-reprecipitation and the formation of the ${\mu}$-phase in the .

  • The efficiency of complex slurry preparation route for the development of high performance RS-SiCf/SiC composites has been investigated. The green bodies for RS-SiC and RS-SiCf/SiC composite materials prior to the infiltration of molten silicon were prepared with various C/SiC complex matrix slurries, which associated with both different sizes of starting SiC particles and blending ratios of starting SiC and carbon particles. The reinforcing materials in the composite system were uncoated and C coated Tyranno SA SiC fiber. The characterization of RS-SiC and RS-SiCf/SiC composite materials was examined by means of SEM, EDS and three point bending test. Based on the mechanical property-microstructure correlation, process optimization methodology is discussed.
