  • The solid solutions of ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$, i.e. ${\alpha}$-sialons, are represented by a general formula of $M_x(Si,Al)_{12}(O,N)_{16}$, in which metal ions (M) dissolve into interstitial sites to stabilize the structure. Processing methods for the fabrication of ${\alpha}/{\beta}$-sialon composites, ${\alpha}-sialon/{\beta}Si_3N_4$ composites, refractory or tough ${\alpha}$-sialon ceramics have been developed to tailor the mechanical properties. Translucent and photoluminescent properties have been investigated recently. A number of applications of ${\alpha}$-sialon ceramics as engineering and optical ceramics are also presented.

  • Recently new technological development needs the advances in the fields of new materials. The most advanced design is not useful if new material's performance is not realized adequately for bearing the service loads and conditions. FGMs suggests the reasonable solution for the those requirements because of its wide range microstructure and the continuous constitutions. It's especially good for the heat-resisting components, piezoelectricity and aerocraft fields. However the fabrication and its experimental estimation methods have not been established because of its various freedom of material's properties. Therefore it is necessary to develope the fabrication method and estimation of strength and deformation. The experiments are conducted under a four point flexural test. According to results, this study shows that FGMs is well fabricated and the deformation and strain fields are expressed very well by digital image correlation method.

  • c-BN films were deposited on SKH-51 steels by electron assisted hot filament CVD method and microstructure development was studied processing parameters such as bias voltage, temperature, etching and phase transformation at boundary layer between BN compound and steel to develop a high performance wear resistance tools. A negative bias voltage higher than 200V at substrate temperature of $800^{\circ}C$ and gas pressure of 20 torr in B2H6-NH3-H2 gas system was one of optimum conditions to produce c-BN films on the SKH-51 steels. Thin layer of hexagonal boron nitride phase was observed at the interface between c-BN layer and substrate.

  • Process simulation requires accurate and reliable data for a wide variety of material properties, ranging from thermal conductivity to flow stress curves. Traditionally such data are gathered from experimental sources, which has significant disadvantages in that not all of the required data is readily available, it may be from various sources that are themselves inconsistent, measurement of high temperature properties is expensive, and furthermore the properties can be sensitive to microstructure as well as to alloy composition. This article describes the development of a new multi-platform software program called JMatPro, which is based on CALPHAD methodology, for calculating the properties and behavior of multi-component alloys. A feature of the JMatPro is that the calculations are based on sound physical principles rather than purely statistical methods. Thus, many of the shortcomings of methods such as regression analysis can be overcome.

  • Alloy 718 nozzle component was manufactured by hot working and electron beam welding process. In this process, domestic 718 materials were applied and evaluated. Hot compression tests were carried out at a lot of process conditions and microstructural evaluation was investigated. Using the results, FEM simulations were performed in order to optimize the hot working process. After hot working, forged work-pieces were machined and welded by electron beam. Final nozzle component were heat treated and their microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated.

  • The objective of this study is to demonstrate the ability of a computer simulation of microstructural evolution in hot forging of C-Mn steels. The development of microstructure is strongly dependent on process variables and metallurgical factors that affect time history of thermodynamical variables such as temperature, strain. and strain rate during deformation. Then finite element method is applied for the prediction of microstructural evolution, and it should be coupled with heat transfer analysis to consider the change of thermodynamical properties during forming process. In this study, Yada's recrystallization model and rigid-thermoviscoplastic finite element method are employed in order to analyze microstructural evolution during hot forging process. To show the validity and effectiveness of the proposed method, experiments are accomplished and the results of experiments are compared with those of simulations.

  • The origin and growth of laryngology is inseparably linked to the development of endoscopic surgery of the larynx. Phonomicrosurgery is a means of maximally preserving the layered microstructure of the vocal fold, that is, the epithelium and lamina propria. Phonomicrosurgery has developed from convergence of micro laryngoscopic surgical technique theory and the mucosal wave theory of laryngeal sound production. Improvements in technology (i.e., laryngoscopes, handled instruments, and lasers), which in part arise from developments in more frequently performed minimally invasive surgical procedures, will probably facilitate the next generation of procedural innovations. The best methods of optimizing phonosurgical outcomes include making an accurate diagnosis, completing a comprehensive voice evaluation, providing sufficient preoperative therapy, carefully selecting patients to undergo phonomicrosurgical procedures, and requiring sufficient postoperative rest and therapy. Phonomicrosurgery will continue to evolve as a result of the interdependent collaboration of surgeons with voice scientists, speech pathologist, and other voice professionals.

  • Palladium membranes have high selectivity of separation and removal of hydrogen to chemical process at high temperature. For the development of hydrogen permeable membrane, palladium was deposited on porous stainless steel support by electroless plating method. In this work, the activation effect on the surface of stainless steel support has been investigated for the effective palladium plating. The morphology and microstructure were characterized by SEM and the composition was analyzed by EDX. It is found that the composition of deposited nuclei on the stainless steel support was changed in accordance with activation cycles. It is also observed that Sn-enriched nuclei has been changed to Pd-enriched nuclei over the fifteenth activation. The uniform deposition of the dense palladium layer on porous stainless steel support has been performing with Sn-enriched nuclei and comparing with Pd-enriched nuclei.

  • In order to vary the primary recrystallization textures, AA 1050 sheets were cold rolled in two different manners. Differences in cold rolling schedule gave rise to the formation of different cold rolling textures also leading to the formation of different primary recrystallization textures. Upon annealing for grain growth, changes in microstructure and texture hardly occurred in the sample depicting Cube recrystallization texture, while grain growth was accompanied with the development {001}<100> Cube texture in the sample displaying a recrystallization texture comprising of weak rolling texture components. The selective growth of Cube oriented grains is attributed to the high mobility of their grain boundaries.
