  • Purpose: The aims of this study are compare with microstructure and mechanical properties of Co-Cr-Mo alloys fabricated by powder metallurgy(P/M) process and casting process respectively. Methods: Microstructure and micro-hardness were tested by SEM and Vickers Hardness Tester. The sintered specimen was produced by furnace-coolling after sintering, however the casting specimen were produced thru air-cooling and water-cooling after the casting. For observation of phase transformation during sintering, DSC analyzing was carried out. Results: Mean pore size of sintered Co-Cr-Mo alloy was $4.32{\mu}m$ and that of casting alloy was $1.63{\mu}m$. Hardness of sintered alloy was lower than water-quenched casting alloy. Conclusion: Proper sintering temperature of Co-Cr-Mo alloy was above $1,200^{\circ}C$ and pore size of casting specimen were finer than sintered specimen, but hardness were similar.

  • A steel with chemical composition, 0.22% C, 0.25% Si, 1.26% Mn, 0.22% Cr, 0.04% Ti, 0.0042% B, and a microstructure of ferrite and spheroidized cementite has been press-formed to automotive center pillar followed by local-hardening heat-treatment. Hardness, tensile properties, fractography, microstructure and surface roughness of local-hardening heat-treated automotive center pillar have been examined. The directly heated and quenched area had fully martensitic structure with Vickers hardenss in the range of 500 to 510. The heat affected area close to the directly heated area showed dual-phase structure of ferrite and martensite. The width of the heat-treated and heat-affected areas after the local-hardening heat treatment was ranging from 32 mm to 50 mm. The surface of the local-hardening heat-treated center pillar revealed some temper color as a consequence of the oxidation during the heat treatment, but the surface roughness was not affected by the local-hardening heat treatment.

  • Effects of conventional rolling(CR) and differential speed rolling(DSR) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Cu-Ni-Si alloy were investigated in detail. The copper alloy with thickness of 3 mm was rolled to 50 % reduction at ambient temperature without lubricant with a differential speed ratio of 2:1. The conventional rolling in which the rolling speed of upper and lower rolls is identical was performed under identical rolling conditions. The shear strain introduced by the CR showed positive values at positions of upper roll side and negative values at positions of lower roll side. However, it showed zero or positive values at all positions for the samples rolled by the DSR. The microstrucure and texture development of the as-rolled copper alloy did not show any significant difference between CR and DSR. The tensile strength of the DSR processed specimen was larger than that of the CR processed specimen. The effects of rolling methods on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the as-rolled copper alloy are discussed in terms of the shear strain.

  • A novel additive manufacturing method with TIG-MIG hybrid heat source was applied for fabricating 5356 aluminum alloy component. In this paper the microstructure evolution, mechanical properties and fracture morphologies of both as-deposited and heat-treated component were investigated, and how these were affected by different heat-treated temperature. The as-deposited microstructure showed dominant equiaxed grains with second phase, and the size of them is coarse in the bottom region, medium in the middle region and fine in the top region owing to different thermal cycling conditions. Compared with as-deposited microstructure, the size of grain becomes large and second phases gradually dissolve in the matrix as heat-treated temperature increase. Different microstructures determine the mechanical properties of component. Results show that average ultimate tensile strength enhances from 226 to 270 MPa and average microhardness increases from 64.2 to 75.3 HV0.1 but ductility decreases from 33 to 6.5% with heat-treated temperature increasing. For all components, the tensile properties are almost the same in the vertical direction (Z) and horizontal direction (Y) due to equiaxed grains, which exhibits isotropy, and the mechanisms of these are analyzed in detailed. In general, the results demonstrate that hybrid arc heat source has the potential to fabricate aluminum alloy component.

  • This paper presents a study of the microstructure and mechanical properties of commercial high-hardness armor (HHA) steels tempered at different temperatures. Although the as-received specimens of all the steels exhibit a tempered martensite structure with lath type morphology, the A steel, which has the smallest carbon content, had the lowest hardness due to reduced solid solution hardening and larger lath thickness, irrespective of tempering conditions. As the tempering temperature increases, the hardness of the steels steadily decreases because dislocation density decreases and the lath thickness of martensite increases due to recovery and over-aging effects. When the variations in hardness plotted as a function of tempering temperature are compared with the hardness of the as-received specimens, it seems that the B steel, which has the highest yield and tensile strengths, is fabricated by quenching, while the other steels are fabricated by quenching and tempering. On the other hand, the impact properties of the steels are affected by specimen orientation and test temperature as well as microstructure. Based on these results, the effect of tempering on the microstructure and mechanical properties of commercial high-hardness armor steels is discussed.

  • This work sought to examine the suitability of twin roll strip casting for Ag-27%Cu-25%Zn-3%Sn brazing alloy (BAg-7A) and to investigate the mechanical properties and microstructure of the strip. The effect of aging heat treatment on the properties was also studied,. This new manufacturing process has applications in the production of the brazing alloy. XRD and microstructural analysis of the Ag-27%Cu-25%Zn-3%Sn strip represented eutectic microstructure of a Cu-rich phase and a Ag-rich matrix regardless of heat treatment. The results of mechanical tests showed tensile strength of 470MPa, a significant enhancement, and an 18% elongation of the twin roll casted strip, due mainly to the solid solution strengthening of Zn atoms (${\sim}20%$) in the Cu-rich phases. Tensile results showed gradually decreasing strengths and increasing elongation with aging heat treatment. Microstructural evolution and fractography were also investigated and related to the mechanical properties.

  • Decarburized zone of metal tongue which is used in seat belt for automobiles was carbon-restoration quenched and tempered using nitrogen-methanol gaseous atmosphere. The effects of microstructure and mechanical properties of metal tongue on the effectiveness of carbon-restoration during tempering was studied. Metal tongue showed $20{\sim}30{\mu}m$ decarburized zone. However, after carbon-restoration, it has uniform microstructure and thus hardness without decarburized zone. Carbon-restoration quenching and tempering process resulted in better wear and corrosion resistances than quenching and tempering process.

  • In this study, we report the microstructure and characterization of Ta20Nb20V20W20Ti20 high-entropy alloy powders and sintered samples. The effects of milling time on the microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated in detail. Microstructure and structural characterization were performed by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The mechanical properties of the sintered samples were analyzed through a compressive test at room temperature with a strain rate of 1 × 10-4 s-1. The microstructure of sintered Ta20Nb20V20W20Ti20 high-entropy alloy is composed of a BCC phase and a TiO phase. A better combination of compressive strength and strain was achieved by using prealloyed Ta20Nb20V20W20Ti20 powder with low oxygen content. The results suggest that the oxide formed during the sintering process affects the mechanical properties of Ta20Nb20V20W20Ti20 high-entropy alloys, which are related to the interfacial stability between the BCC matrix and TiO phase.

  • The effect of Cu content on microstructure and mechanical properties of nano-sized Cu dispersed $Al_2O_3(Al_2O_3/Cu)$ nanocomposites was investigated. The nanocomposites with Cu content of 2.5 to 10 vol% were prepared by reduction and hot-pressing of $Al_2O_3/CuO$ powder mixtures. The nanocomposites with Cu content of 2.5 and 5vol% exhibited the maximum fracture strength of 820MPa and enhanced toughness compared with monolithic $Al_2O_3$. The strengthening was mainly attributed to the refinement of $Al_2O_3$ matrix grains. The toughening mechanism was discussed by the observed microstructural feature based on crack bridging.

  • γ-dicalcium silicate (γ-C2S) is characterized by its strong carbonation reactivity and has the prospect to be utilized as a building material with the added benefit of CO2 capture. This paper aims to point out the impact of γ-C2S on the microstructure characteristics and mechanical properties of GGBFS paste, and mortar samples. Three curing conditions including un-carbonation, natural carbonation, and accelerated carbonation were applied to the research. Besides, hydration products after the carbonation process are also detected. What's more, the carbonation treatment method also meets the requirement of capture more greenhouse gas and recycles the waste products of metallurgy.
