  • An optimum route to fabricate the $Al_2O_3/Cu$ nanocomposites with sound microstructure and improved mechanical properties was investigated. Microstructural investigations for the composites prepared using $Al_2O_3/Cu$-nitrate showed that fine Cu particles with average size of 150 nm were homogeneously distributed within the $Al_2O_3$ matrix grains and at the grain boundaries. Fracture strength of 953 MPa and toughness of 4.8 Mpa(equation omitted)m were measured for the composite. The strengthening and toughening of the composites are explained by the refinement of the microstructure and the crack bridging/deflection, respectively.

  • Nd:YAG laser welding of AZ31B-H24 magnesium alloy was carried out using AZ61 filler wire(Mg-6wt%Al-1wt%Zn). Microstructure and mechanical properties of welded joint were examined by optical microscopy, scanning electronic microscopy(SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS), electron probe micro analyzer(EPMA) and victors hardness, tensile test at the room and elevated temperature. Test results indicate that the specimens welded with AZ61 filler wire have better tensile strength, elongation and victors hardness at room temperature than those of welded without filler wire. However tensile strength are similar but elongation are quite different at elevated temperature.

  • The forging process design and microstructure evolution for gas turbine disk of a Waspaloy is investigated in this study. Parameters related to deformation are die and preform geometry, and forging temperature of die and workpiece. Die and preform design are considered to reduce the forging load, and to avoid the forging defects. Blocker and finisher dies for multistage forging are designed and the initial billet geometry is determined. The control of hot forging parameters such as strain, strain rate and temperature also is important because the microstructure change in hot working affects the mechanical properties. The dynamic recrystallization evolution has been studied in the temperature range 900-$1200^{\circ}C$ and strain rate range 0.01-1.0s-1 using hot compression tests. Modeling equations are required represent the flow curve, recrystallized grain size, recrystallized volume fraction by various tests. In this study, we used to thermo-viscoplastic finite element modeling equation of DEFORM-2D to predict the microstructure change evolution during thermo-mechanical processing. The microstructure is updated during the entire thermal and deformation processes in forging.

  • In present study, the effect of heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the gravity cast superchargers housing using A356 alloy were investigated. In order to identify the characteristics of superchagers housing casting with heat treatment, Vickers hardness test, electrical conductivity test, opical and scanning electron microscopy were performed. And also, to investigate their mechanical properties, the T6 treated superchagers housing casting in optimum heat treatment condition were carried out tensile test using UTM (Universal Testing Machine).

  • Carbon-ceramic composites were fabricated by using fly ash and PANOX fibers as reinforcement. Fly ash, because of its small size particles e.g. submicron to micron level can be effectively dispersed along with fibrous reinforcements. Phenolic resin was used as carbon precursor. Both dry as well as wet methods were used for forming composites. The resulting composites were characterized for their microstructure, thermal and mechanical properties. The microstructure and mechanical properties of composites are found to be dependent on type of the fly ash, fibrous reinforcements as well as processing parameters. The addition of fly ash improves hardness and the fibers, which get co-carbonized on heat treatment, increase the flexural strength of the carbon-ceramic composites. Composites with dual reinforcement exhibit about 30-40% higher strength as compared to the composites made with single reinforcement, either with fly ash as filler or with chopped fibers.

  • Demand of the clean and convenient natural gas has continuously increased with recognizing of the environment problem since liquefied natural gas was introduced in Korea. Clean fuel natural gas was supplied to each city through high tensile strength pipeline connected by welding. Grades of pipeline were divided into the high and middle pressure according to supply pressure. Pipeline was welded mainly SMA welding process due to its easy handling, the other welding process was adopted according to the constructing condition. We were examined on the microstructure variation and mechanical properties of weld metal for high pressure pipeline, API 5L X-42.

  • A study has been made of preferred orientation, crose sectional microstructure, surface morphology and mechanical properties of copper foils fabricated by electrodeposition on 304 stainless steel plate from copper sulfate baths for high speed plating. The preferred orientation of the copper foils changed from the [110] to the [111] to ture with decreasing bath temperature and increasing cathode current density. The foils with the [110] texture had the field oriented texture type structure and the surface of many asperities grooved approximately perpendicular to the subtrate. A specimen with the [111]+[311] texture had the lower strength than one with the [10] texture, if they were obtained under similar electrolysis conditions.

  • This paper is concerned with effects of Mn and heat-input on the mechanical properties of EGW welds. Four different kinds of welding consumables were fabricated by varying Mn contents such as 1.3, 1.5, 1.7, 2.0%Mn and each consumable was welded for EGW on four heat-input conditions between 190 and 340 KJ/Cm. Mn contents were decreased as heat-input increases and alloy elements (C, Si, Ti, B, Al) to deoxidize easily also revealed similar tendency to Mn. Their microstructure, Charpy impact property and strength were investigated, and it is found that Charpy impact property and strength exhibit a strong dependence on change of microstructure by Mn contents and heat-input. The increase of Mn contents or the decrease of heat-input made the microstructure fine and increase volume fraction of acicular ferrite, thereby leading to the great improvement of Charpy impact property and strength. In case of single EGW, optimum Mn contents are over 1.7% for the toughness and strength.

  • This research introduces an innovative approach for fabricating microstructure surfaces using spray-coating deposition. The resulting surface, referred to as Magnetically Responsive Microstructures (MRM), exhibits hierarchically structured micro-pillar arrays with remarkably high aspect ratios. The fabrication process involves precisely mixing PDMS and hexane with Carbonyl iron powders, followed by ultrasonication and spray-coating on the top of a PDMS substrate placed on the neodymium magnet. The MRM surface shows hydrophobic properties, characterized by a contact angle surpassing 150° and an aspect ratio exceeding 10. Through a comprehensive exploration of critical parameters, including spray amount, magnet-substrate distance, and solution ratio enhanced dynamic tunability and exceptional hydrophobic characteristics are attained. This novel approach holds significant potential for diverse applications in the realm of dynamically tunable microstructures and magnetically responsive surfaces.
