Microstrip reflectarray is an antenna which controls its radiation pattern with a number of reflective elements. Conventionally, the reflectarray has been researched to replace curved reflector antennas. In this paper, design theories of reflectarray is briefly introduced, and research trends of high gain and broadband reflectarrays are reviewed. To improve the gain of the reflectarrays, it is required that the reflection phase errors on the reflectarray surface be minimized. For this purpose, sufficiently wide reflection phase range and low phase sensitivity should be realized with the designed element. For bandwidth improvement, the reflection phase of the element should be linear with the frequency variation. In this paper, various researches to improve the reflection phase characteristics of the element for high gain and broadband reflectarrays, such as multi-layer and single-layer multi-resonant structures, are reviewed. Also, dual-reflectarray configuration for compact antenna design is reviewed. Finally, various applications of reflectarrays such as contoured beam, near-field focusing, and RCS reduction are reviewed.

In this paper, the slot coupled stacked microstrip antenna, which has wide bandwidth characteristics because of the double tuning effects from the interactions between two patches and feeding slot and improves distortions of radiation patterns due to spurious radiation from feeder, is analyzed. For the analy- sis Green function in the spectrum domain and Galerkin method is applied with an accurate analysis mode for slot coupled feeding structure using the scattering analysis method. The basis functions are 3 EB modes for patches and 5 PWS modes for feeder. The slot coupled stacked microstrip antennas are designed and fabricated with the center frequency of 11.5 Ghz and 12.0 GHz. The experimental results show the wide bandwidth characteristics of 1.9 ~ 2.2 GHz and agree well with the simulation results which have 15~20% bandwidth.

In this paper, the resonance characteristics of zigzag wire dipole antennas are first analyzed by the method of moment(MOM) for shortening the space occupation length of straight wire dipole antenna Considering the shortening effect the integrated zigzag dipole antennas with the simplified microstrip feed are designed. Since the integration gives rise to discontinuities due to antenna line width with abrupt bend angles, the compensation by the chamfer is applied. Futhermore the integrated parasitic zigzag lines are properly attached to both sides of substrate for compensation of the effect of the dielectric substrate, hence improving the resonance characteristic. The design results at UHF and ISM band are verified with experiments.

Two substrate integrated waveguide (SIW)-based antennas for the application of software-defined radar are proposed and investigated herein. It is usually well known that SIWs are easily integrated, lightweight, have low insertion loss, and low interference levels compared to conventional microstrip structures. The primary function of the proposed antennas is to transmit continuous waves for indoor motion detection, with the lowest amount of loss and an appropriate amount of gain. Moreover, the results of this study show that the size of the antenna can be reduced significantly (i.e., by about 40%) by applying a meander line structure. The operating frequencies of the proposed antennas are both within the industrial, scientific, and medical band (i.e., 2.4-2.4835 GHz). Measured results of return loss are -16 dB and -20 dB at 2.435 GHz and 2.43 GHz, respectively, and the measured gain is 8.2 dBi and 5.5 dBi, respectively. Antenna design and verification are undertaken through commercially available full electromagnetic software.

In this paper, Ive propose a bow-tie-shaped meander slot antenna find by a microstrip line to achieve compact size as well as wideband characteristic. While conventional bow-tie slot antennas exhibit wide band characteristic, they have relatively large size. On the other hand, the meander slot antennas are very small, but they reveal quite narrow bandwidth (typically less than 1 %). To realize miniaturized antennas balling large bandwidth, combination of the bow-tie slot and the meander slot geometries is proposed in this paper. Theoretical results show that the proposed antenna with uniform slot width is 65.5 % smaller than that of the conventional bow-tie antenna in size, while the bandwidth is 3 times larger than that of the meander slot antenna. Moreover, the non-uniform slot width antenna shows 60 % smaller in size and about 3.5 times wider in bandwidth than the previous antennas. Measured antenna performance reveals excellent agreement with the predicted values.

Effect of a finite grounded substrate on mutual coupling characteristics of a 2-element array antenna using inductor loaded patch antennas is investigated. The mutual coupling characteristics of a 2-element array antenna using inductor loaded patch antennas positioned along the E-plane are compared with those positioned along the H-plane. The magnitude of mutual coupling is very small and the distance between the center of element and the substrate edge on the E-plane for the minimum mutual coupling is similar regardless of the direction at which antenna elements are positioned in the case of a 2-element array antenna using inductor loaded patch antennas.

The effect of a finite substrate size on the radiation characteristics of a two-element linear E-plane array antenna using microstrip patch antennas is investigated. The average active element pattern characteristics of two-element E-plane array antennas printed on different dielectric constant substrates with various substrate sizes and element spacings are analyzed. Using the average active element pattern, the radiation pattern characteristics of the array antenna versus scan angle is analyzed. The simulation results show that the diffracted fields of surface waves from substrate edges have a significant effect on the radiation characteristics of a 2-element E-plane array antenna. The distance between the center of patch antenna and the substrate edges on the E-plane for the enhancement of radiation characteristics of the array antenna is about $0.35{\lambda}_0$.

A new, systematic, simplified design procedure for quasi-Yagi antennas is presented. The design is based on the simple impedance matching among antenna components: i.e., transition, feed, and antenna. This new antenna design is possible due to the newly developed ultra-wideband transition. As design examples, wideband quasi-Yagi antennas are successfully designed and implemented in Ku- and Ka-bands with frequency bandwidths of 53.2% and 29.1%, and antenna gains of $4{\sim}5 dBi$ and $ 5{\sim}5.6 dBi$, respectively. The design method can be applied to other balanced antennas and their arrays.

A series-fed microstrip array antenna of beamwidth $10^{\circ}$, squint angle $80^{\circ}$ and SLL -15 dB below is designed. Series-fed arrays are formed by interconnecting all the elements by high-impedance transmission lines and feeding the power at the first element and it is a traveling-wave antenna which is terminated with a matched load. Radiation patterns and impedance matching of the antenna are analyzed by Ensemble 4.0, which is a popular software package for designing printed antennas and arrays. The squint angle of beam can be controlled by the spacing between the elements. The major advantages of series-fed array antennas are that feed arangement is compact and the losses associated with the feeding network are less than those of a corporate feed type. The antennas are fabricated on the RT/Duroid Laminates of 62 mil thickness. The experimental results are very close to the specifications to be designed.

A small size broadband microstrip patch antenna with small ground plane has been fabricated using MEMS. Multiple layer substrates we used to realize small size and broadband characteristics. The microstrip patch is divided into 4 pieces and each patch is connected to each other using a metal microstrip line. The fabrication please process is simple and only one mask is needed. Two types of microtrip antennas are fabrication Type A is the microstrip antenna with metal lines and type B is the microstrip antenna without metal lines. The size of proposed microstip antenna is $8{\times}12{\times}2mm^3$ and the experimental results show that the antenna type A and type B have the bandwidth of 420MHz at 5.3 GHz and 480MHz at 5.66 GHz, respectively
