  • This paper presents a scaled teleoperation scheme for 3-D microassembly on the experimental microassembly workcell. A workspace mapping between a master and a slave microrobot system is presented to teleoperatively control the microrobot system for microassembly such as peg-in-hole task. Based on this result, a scaling factor is designed and applied to the teleoperated micromanipulation for peg-in-hole task in a mesoscale. Using 3-D virtual simulator, the workspace of microrobot system, and the working path trajectory for microassembly is visually represented. The proposed method is validated through the execution of 3-D microassembly such as peg-in-hole task on the experimental microassembly workcell. The proposed method in the developed ...

  • This paper introduces an approach to enhance the performance of magnetic manipulation systems for microrobot actuation. A variety of eight-electromagnet configurations have been proposed to date. The previous study revealed that achieving 5 degrees of freedom (5-DOF) control necessitates at least eight electromagnets without encountering workspace singularities. But so far, the research considering the influence of iron cores embedded in electromagnets has not been conducted. This paper offers a novel approach to optimizing electromagnet configurations that effectively consider the influence of iron cores. The proposed methodology integrates probabilistic optimization with finite element methods (FEM), using Bayesian Optimization (BO). The Bayesian optimization aims to optimize the worst-case magnetic force generation for enhancing the performance of magnetic manipulation system. The proposed simulation-based model achieves approximately 20% improvement compared to previous systems in terms of actuation performance. This study has the potential for enhancing magnetic manipulation systems for microrobot control, particularly in medical and microscale technology applications.

  • In this paper, a compact 3-DOF mobile microrobot with sub-micron resolution is presented. It has many outstanding features : it is as small as a coin ; its precision is of sub-micrometer resolution on the plane ; it has an unlimited travel range ; and it has simple and compact mechanisms and structures which can be realized at low cost. With the impact actuating mechanism, this system enable both fast coarse motion and highly precise fine motion with a pulse wave input voltage controlled. The 1 -DOF impact actuating mechanism is modeled by taking into consideration the friction between the piezoelectric actuator and base. This modeling technique is extended to simulate the motion of the 3-DOF mobile robot. In addition, experiments are conducted to verify that the simulations accurately represent the real system. The modeling and simulation results will be used to design the model-based controller for the target system. The developed system can be used as a robotic positioning device in the micromanipulation system that determines the position of micro-sized components or particles in a small space, or assemble them in the meso-scale structure.

  • Recently, the microrobots powered by biological muscle actuators were proposed. Among the biological muscle actuators, frog muscle is well known as a good muscle actuator and has a large displacement, actuation forces and piezoelectric properties. Therefore, for the application of the biomimetic microrobot, this paper reports the electromechanical properties of frog muscle. First of all, the experimental setup has been established for measuring generative force of the frog muscle. Through the various electrical stimulating inputs to the frog muscle, we measured the contractile force of the frog muscle. From the measuring results, we found that the actuating contractile force responses of the frog muscle are determined by the amplitude, frequency, duty ratio, and wave form of the stimulation signal. This study will be beneficial for the development of the microrobot actuated by frog muscle.

  • In this thesis, we construct the microrobot succor system and navigate the real-time path planning and visual tracking of each robot. The system consists robots, vision system and a host computer. Because the robots are free-ranging mobile robot, it is needed to make and gallow the path. The path is planned and controlled by a host computer, ie. Supervisory control system. In path planning, we suggest a cost function which consists of three terms. One is the smoothness of the path, another is the total distance or time, and the last one is to avoid obstacles. To minimize the cost function, we choose the parametric cubic spline and update the coefficients in real time. We perform the simulation for the path planing and obstacle avoidance and real experiment for visual tracking

  • In order to design an effective foot surface which can provide adequate friction for a self-propelled medical microrobot moving inside the small intestine, frictional mechanisms between the small intestine inner wall and the foot surface of the robot must be understood. In this paper, mechanical interlocking effect was considered to design the surface of the foot that can generate the desired frictional force. The concept of the design was derived from the hookworm that lives inside the small intestine. Hookwarms are known to adhere to the small intestine wall by interlocking with villi on the surface of the small intestine. The interlocking mechanism was considered as the main frictional mechanism for the design of the microrobot foot surface in this work. 2 mm and 6 mm diameter solid and hollow cylindrical shaped foot specimens were designed and tested to assess the frictional force between the specimens and the porcine small intestine specimen.

  • This paper addresses the localization and navigation problem in the movement of service robots by using invisible two dimensional barcodes on the floor. Compared with other methods using natural or artificial landmarks, the proposed localization method has great advantages in cost and appearance since the location of the robot is perfectly known using the barcode information after mapping is finished. We also propose a navigation algorithm which uses a topological structure. For the topological information, we define nodes and edges which are suitable for indoor navigation, especially for large area having multiple rooms, many walls, and many static obstacles. The proposed algorithm also has the advantage that errors which occur in each node are mutually independent and can be compensated exactly after some navigation using barcodes. Simulation and experimental results were performed to verify the algorithm in the barcode environment, showing excellent performance results. After mapping, it is also possible to solve the kidnapped robot problem and to generate paths using topological information.
