  • Traditional implementation schemes for automotive electronic control units look simple, but the tradition schemes need so many coarse works to satisfy the user requirements regarding time constraints whenever their microprocessors are changed. Recently, a movement toward using middle-wares, such as OSEK operating system, has risen in automotive industry. In this paper, we describe how to use the features of operating systems to replace traditional firmware based softwares in points of views of services, such as multitask support, preemption, and realtime property. To show an example, we implemented a parking assistance system as a prototype.

  • Clock grid networks are now common in most high performance microprocessors. This paper presents a new effective modeling and simulation methodology for the clock grid using scattering parameter. It also shows the effect of wire width and grid size on the clock skew of the grid. The interconnection of the clock grid is modeled by RC passive elements. The results show that the error is within 10 % comparing to Hspice simulation results.

  • Except a desktop computer and workstation, an embedded system is a system containing microprocessors. While a desktop computer and a workstation are designed for a general purpose, an embedded system is designed for a dedicated purpose. Thus, an embedded system must meet some constraints such as low power consumption, low cost, small size, real-time, or user-defined ones. A simple and low cost embedded system may be able to be designed without using embedded operating systems (OS). However, considered design time and effort, some embedded system had better be designed with using embedded OS. Under given constraints and purpose of some embedded systems, one embedded OS can save more time, cost, and effort in designing those embedded systems than others. This paper compares four embedded OSs, Windows CE, Embedded Linux, pSOS, and uC/OS. It analyzes several issues of embedded OS such as process scheduling, inter-process communication (IPC), memory management, and network support. Also, it describes the product of each embedded OS.

  • This paper presents a simple sensor network consists of a group of sensors, RF components, and microprocessors, to perform a distributed sensing and information transmission using wireless links. In the proposed sensor network, though each sensor node has a limited capability and a simple signal-processing engine, a group of sensor nodes can perform a various tasks through coordinated information sharing and wireless communication in a large working area. Using the capability of self-localization and tracking, we show the sensor network can be applied to localization and navigation of mobile robot in which the robot has to be coordinated effectively to perform given task in real time.

  • An assembly package program is developed for a computerize4 operation of a drilling machine system utilizing a microprocessor. Different drilling instruction requires merely the input of different sets of input data. To make pulse motors to follow their input pulse trains with fidelity, an optimum start-stop rate matrix is proposed, whose elements are determined according to the pulse motor torque and the load inertia of the mechanical system composed of a workpiece and a worktable.

  • A smart pressure measurement system is described, which provides a precise A/D conversion and is highly suitable for communication with microprocessors. In order to avoid unstable problems of remote pressure sensing we have developed a new interface board which performs the A/D conversion and smart signal processing of the measured pressure data. Serial communication software which is based on ASCII code commands is also developed to process initial setup and calibration functions as well as multi-drop communication with PC. The test and evaluation of the proposed system has been shown as having the better performance compared to the other types of existing pressure measuring systems and will give good applications to the industrial use where a highly precision remote sensing is needed.

  • There are several methods in controlling resonant converters to regulate the output with low switching losses. In this paper, Pulse-width modulation method or current controlled method is applied to regulate the output with low switching losses. In digital implementation of resonant converter systems, the speed of the applied processor is very critical since the switching frequency is very high. Thus the various possible candidates of microprocessors are evaluated for the implementation of resonant converter systems. Then too design methods and techniques are desioribed when single chip processor is used to simplify hardware requirements.

  • This paper describes a 72-word by 32-bit 2-read/1-write multi-port register file, which is suitable for 32-bit RISC/DSP microprocessors. To minimize area and achieve high speed, advanced single-ended sense amplifiers are used. Each part of circuit is optimized at transistor level. The verification of functionality and timing is performed using HSPICE simulations. After modeling and validating the circuit at transistor level, it was laid out in a 0.6um 1-poly 3-metal layer CMOS technology. The simulation results show maximum operating frequency is 179MHz in worst case conditions. It contains 27,326 transistors and the size is 3.02mm by 2.20mm.

  • In this paper design and implementation of ship's distributed remote control system using dual-microprocessor is presented for real time process. The proposed system is implemented with the single chip microprocessors in tightly coupled mode and results in speed up of $s_p$=1.74. Under the assumption that the nodes are interconnected in multidrop, the overall system performance such as average throughout-delay characteristics and effective throughput are analyzed using M/G/1 queneing model, and results show that the proposed node can be used in medium sized distributed monitoring and control system.
