영양소의 변천과 식물육종의 추이 (Changes in the Concept of Nutrients and Transition of Plant Breeding)

  • During the first half of twentieth century, even though the importance of non-calorie essential micronutrients of 13 vitamins and 17 minerals has been known to alleviate nutritional disorder; the primary objective of agriculture and plant breeding programs has been to increase the productivity and seed yields, and macronutrients of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates made up the bulk of foodstuff which were used primarily as an energy source. In the last decade it has been found that non-essential micronutrients encompass a vast group of phytochemicals including antioxidants that are not strictly required in the diet but when present at sufficient levels work as health-promoting chemicals. Nowadays agricultural crops are grown for health rather than for food or fiber, and modifying the nutritional compositions of plant foods has become an urgent health issue. To ensure an adequate intake of essential vitamins and minerals, and to increase the consumption of health-promoting phytochemicals, the researches on plant secondary metabolism have been made. The attempt to improve nutritional quality of crops has been blocked by a lack of basic knowledge of plant metabolism. The advent of genomics era enabled new approaches to make crossing regardless of species, family, or phylum barriers, and the accumulation in our basic knowledge on plant secondary metabolism during the coming decade would be tremendous. As the major staple crops contain insufficient amount of many micronutrients, fortification strategy will be a necessary practice. Elevated intake of specific vitamins, C, E, and $\beta$-carotene, mineral selenium, antioxidants, and phytochemicals significantly reduces the risk of chronic disease such as cancer, cardiovascular disorder, diabetis, and other degenerative disease associated with aging. As the attempt to improve the nutritional quality of crops requires the basic knowledges on plant metabolism, plant biochemistry, human physiology, and food chemistry, strong interdisplinary collaboration among plant biotechnologists, human nutritionists, and food scientists will be needed. Inhibition of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other degenerative disorder may be the biggest goal facing nutritional plant breeders. But the assumption that simply increasing dietary level of any compound will necessarily improve human health is a dangerous idea because many plant secondary products and dietary contaminants have paradoxical (hermetic) effects. Before biotechnical manipulation is undertaken to elevate or reduce any individual constituent of crops, the contribution of the micronutrient to human health must first be investigated.

양액과 SCB액비 처리에 미량요소 첨가가 방울토마토의 미네랄 함량과 생육에 미치는 영향 (Effect of the Mixed Treatment of Electrolyzed Micronutrients with Nutrient Solution and SCB Slurry on Mineral Content and Growth of Cherry Tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum))

  • 식물미네랄(phyto-minerals) 함량을 높인 미네랄강화 농작물(biofortification foods)을 개발하기 위하여 전기분해를 이용하여 10종(Co, Fe, Mg, Mn, Sr, Zn, Li, Sn, V, Ti, Se, S)의 미량요소를 함유하는 복합미네랄액을 조제하였다. 양액과 SCB 액비에 복합미량요소액을 방울토마토 처리한 결과 양액+복합미량요소액 처리구는 Li, Zn, Sr, Se, Ti이 증가되었고, SCB+복합미량요소액 처리구는 Li, Zn, Se, Co, Sr, Ti 함량이 유의성있게 증가하였다. 양액+SCB+복합미량요소액 처리구는 SCB액비, NS액비 처리구보다 Li, Zn, Se, Co, Ti 함량이 유의성 있게 증가하였다. 토마토의 생육과 수량은 양액처리구에서 가장 높았고, 복합 미량요소액 처리로 감소하였다. 토마토의 수량은 표준양액처리구와 비교할때 NS+복합미량요소액 처리구와 SCB+양액+복합 미량요소액 혼합시용구는 각각 97%와 94%의 토마토 과실 수량를 나타내었으나 미량요소 강화효과가 있었으므로 혼합용액을 조제하면 토마토 재배용 양액으로 활용이 가능할 것으로 보인다.

무, 배추 및 고추종자의 분쟁사례연구 (The Study on the Disputes Originated from the Seeds of Radish, Chinese Cabage, and Pepper)

  • '농산종묘법'하에서 1968년부터 1970년 사이에 발생한 채소 종자분쟁은 177건 이었다. 이중 발아불량에 대한 종자분쟁은 46건(26%)으로 가장 많았으며 불량종자는 43건(24.3%), 수입종자에 대한 분쟁은 42건(23.7%) 이형주에 대한 분쟁은 27건(15.6%) 순이었다.'종묘관리법'하에서 모든 채소로부터 발생한 종자분쟁은 1976년부터 1995년 사이에 175건 이었는데 무가 53건(30%)으로 비교적 많았으며 배추 19건(11%), 고추 17건(10%) 순이었다. 무에서 발생한 종자분쟁의 유형은 추대(36%), 파종기불이행(21%), 순도불량(19%) 등이었으며 배추는 미량원소 결핍(27%), 발아불량(21%), 결구불량(16%), 병해(16%) 등이었고 고추는 착과불량(6%), 기형과발생(5%), 병해(3%) 등이었다.

폐경 후 여성의 대사증후군 지표와 영양소 섭취에 대한 비교 융합연구 : 2010~2012 국민건강영양조사자료 이용 (Comparison of metabolic syndrome indicators and nutrient intakes in postmenopausal women : from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2010~2012)

  • 본 연구는 제 5기 국민건강영양조사(2010~2012) 결과를 바탕으로 폐경여성의 대사증후군 지표에 따른 영양소 섭취를 비교 조사하였다. 조기폐경 여성 214명과 일반폐경 여성 2,545명을 분류하였으며, 폐경여성의 영양섭취에서 비만인 경우 레티놀 섭취와의 연관을 나타내고 있음을 확인하였고, 당뇨인 경우 리보플라빈 섭취량에 있어서 유의함을 확인하였다. 본 연구 결과 폐경여성에서 레티놀과 리보플라빈, 조섬유, 칼슘 및 나트륨 등의 미량영양소가 대사증후군 위험과 관련성이 있음을 보였는데, 추후 대규모 전향적 연구가 실시되어 각 영양소 섭취량과 폐경 후 대사증후군의 인과관계를 더욱 명확히 규명할 필요가 있을 것이라 사료된다.

퇴비의 미량원소 함량과 작물에 대한 유효도 (Content and Availability of Micronutrients in Manure-based Composts)

  • 가축분과 톱밥을 주원료로 하고 기타 농산부산물과 무기 자재로 제조된 퇴비의 미량원소 함량을 조사하고 이러한 퇴비의 처리가 토양의 미량원소 함량과 작물의 미량원소 흡수 이용에 미치는 영향을 상추 재배를 통하여 조사하였다. 시중에 유통되고 있는 5종의 퇴비를 구입하여 실험에 사용하였으며, 미량원소는 총 함량과 가용성 함량으로 분석하였다. 미량원소 함량이 낮은 토양에 퇴비 1종을 1,000 및 $2,000kg\;10a^{-1}$ 수준으로 처리하고 포트 시험으로 온실에서 상추를 재배하였으며, 생육과 식물체중의 미량원소 함량을 조사하였다. 퇴비중의 미량원소 함량은 원료물질이 다른 만큼 퇴비의 종류별로 총 함량과 가용성 함량 모두 다양하였다. 미량원소 총 함량은 B, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Zn이 각각 26-42, 27-160, 4,300-9,500, 290-790, 0-0.5, $140-420mg\;kg^{-1}$ 범위로 나타났다. 퇴비중의 0.1 N HCl 가용성 B, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn 은 각각 총 함량의 23-32, 1.3-2.6, <1, 7-32, 0.5-5% 수준이었으며 DTPA 가용성 함량은 0.1 N HCl 가용성 함량보다 높았다. 퇴비를 $2,000kg\;10a^{-1}$ 수준으로 처리한 경우 퇴비를 처리하지 않은 대조구에 비하여 통계적으로 유의성 있게 생육이 증가하였으며, 대조구에 비하여 퇴비 처리구 모두에서 상추 잎 중의 B, Cu, Mo, Zn 함량이 높게 나타났다. 그러나 퇴비 처리가 Fe와 Mn의 흡수는 증가시키지 못하였다. 퇴비 $2,000kg\;10a^{-1}$ 수준의 처리를 통하여 토양에 공급되는 0.1 N HCl 가용성 미량원소의 양은 상추 생육에 필요한 양보다 많았으며, 이러한 결과로부터 적절한 수준의 퇴비 시용을 통하여 작물이 필요로 하는 미량원소를 원활히 공급할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다. 따라서 퇴비 시용량이 비교적 많은 비닐하우스 농가에서 사용되고 있는 미량원소 비료의 시용 효과는 미량원소 흡수에 미치는 토양 환경이나 작물 요인을 고려하여 면밀히 검토되어야 할 것이다.

Role of Micronutrients in Skin Health and Function

  • Skin is the first line of defense for protecting our bodies against external perturbations, including ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, mechanical/chemical stress, and bacterial infection. Nutrition is one of many factors required for the maintenance of overall skin health. An impaired nutritional status alters the structural integrity and biological function of skin, resulting in an abnormal skin barrier. In particular, the importance of micronutrients (such as certain vitamins and minerals) for skin health has been highlighted in cell culture, animal, and clinical studies. These micronutrients are employed not only as active compounds in therapeutic agents for treating certain skin diseases, but also as ingredients in cosmetic products. Here, the author describes the barrier function of the skin and the general nutritional requirements for skin health. The goal of this review is to discuss the potential roles and current knowledge of selected micronutrients in skin health and function.

소아 설사의 약물치료 (The Rational Use of Drugs in the Management of Diarrhea in Children)

  • Worldwide, diarrhea remains one of the most common illnesses among children. Oral rehydration therapy (ORT) is the cornerstone of diarrhea treatment. Yet, the rates at which ORT is used are still disappointingly low. Additional treatment interventions include antimotility drugs, antisecretary drugs, adsorbents, probiotics, antibiotics, oral immunoglobulin, micronutrient supplementation. Drugs are generally not necessary. However, selected probiotics may reduce the duration and intensity of diarrhea. Zinc is beneficial especially to malnourished children with diarrhea. Antibiotic treatment is effective mainly in shigella and cholera infection. Other drugs may be effective but require further investigations.

시스템다이내믹스를 이용한 저출생체중아의 성장예측모형 (A System Dynamics Model for Growth Prediction of Low Birth Weight Infants)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a system dynamics model for growth prediction of low birth weight infants(LBWIs) based on nutrition. This growth prediction model consists of 9 modules; body weight, height, carbohydrate, protein, lipid, micronutrient, water, activity and energy module. The results of the model simulation match well with the percentiles of weights and heights of the Korean infants, also with the growth records of 55 LBWIs, under 37 weeks of gestational age, whose weights are appropriate for their gestational age. This model can be used to understand the current growth mode of LBWIs, predict the future growth of LBWIs, and be utilized as a tool for controlling the nutrient intake for the optimal growth of LBWIs in actual practice.

The Zinc Transport Systems and Their Regulation in Pathogenic Fungi

  • Zinc is an essential micronutrient required for many enzymes that play essential roles in a cell. It was estimated that approximately 3% of the total cellular proteins are required for zinc for their functions. Zinc has long been considered as one of the key players in host-pathogen interactions. The host sequesters intracellular zinc by utilizing multiple cellular zinc importers and exporters as a means of nutritional immunity. To overcome extreme zinc limitation within the host environment, pathogenic microbes have successfully evolved a number of mechanisms to secure sufficient concentrations of zinc for their survival and pathogenesis. In this review, we briefly discuss the zinc uptake systems and their regulation in the model fungus Saccharomyces cerevisiae and in major human pathogenic fungi such as Aspergillus fumigatus, Candida albicans, and Cryptococcus gattii.

  • Numerous studies have shown that ascorbic acid is an indispensable micronutrient required to maintain the physiological processes of different animals including most of fishes. L-ascorbyl-2-glucose (AA2G) is an $\alpha$-glucose conjugate of AA on the C-2 position and a newly found AA derivative front Kimchi, Korean traditional fermented vegetable food, AA2G s stable to ascorbate oxidase and heating, it can be effectively hydrolyzed in vitro by the rice seed $\alpha$-glucosidase.
