  • Microdrilling is one of the most difficult operations because of the poor chip discharge and the weakness of tool. This study is concerned about the development of a microdrilling monitoring system that is useful for minimizing the tool breakage and enhancing the machinability in the air spindle based microdrilling. The system is composed of a drilling state detection unit and an adaptive step-feed control unit that controls the micro-stepping motor driven spindle axis. Drilling states such as overload, tood breakage are recognized by the change of the air spindle speed which is measured via the reflective photo sensor. Based on the monitoring results, the adaptive step-feed control algorithm adjusts the step increment to keep the decrease of spindle speed within a specified range. The results of evaluation tests have shown that the developed system is very effective to prevent the breakage of microdrill and improves the productivity in comparison with the conventional microdrilling.

  • A three-dimensional hydrogel scaffold has been proposed for the effective production of biomimetic intestinal villi to reduce ethical and cost problems caused by animal testing in pharmaceutical development. This study explores an experimental approach to develop a new technique based on laser machining and microdrilling processes to produce a plastic mold for the fabrication of a three-dimensional hydrogel scaffold. For process optimization, both the laser machining and the microdrilling experiments are conducted by varying the experimental conditions, and structural characterization of the mold and intestinal villi were performed using SEM (scanning electron microscope) and OM (optical microscope) images. Polycarbonate (PC) was used as a candidate material. The experimental results show that intestinal villi can be fabricated by both laser and microdrilling machining processes.

  • The characteristics of femtosecond laser ablation of $Al_2O_3$ for prescision microfabrication are studied experimentally. Specifically, the process time during femtosecond laser drilling of microholes with $sub-100{\mu}m$ diameter are investigated for varying laser fluence, scan speed and beam path designs like trepanning with continuously changed start points. The accumulation of sub-micrometer size particles within the hole and the deterioration of edge clarity and roundness for decreasing hole diameter are examined and through process optimization the microdrilling with good hole quality is achieved using a femtosecond laser system (repetitionrate 1 kHz, wavelength 785 nm, pulse duration 185 fs)

  • Resently, reduction of industrial products in size and weight has increased by the application of micro-drill for gadgets of high precision and gave rise to a great interest in a micro-drilling. Due to the lack of tool stiffness and the chip packing, micro-drilling requires not only the robust tool structure which has not affected by the vibration, but also the effective drilling methods designed to prevent tool fracture from cutting troubles. Firstly, this paper presents a optimum characteristic evaluation method of 0.15mm microdrill in consideration of new manufacturing processes for improving the product rate and extend the tool life, and secondly suggest between microdrilling characteristic properties of tool md evaluation of workpiece quality through experiment.

  • PC-TEMs (Polycarbonate Track-Etched membranes) were micro-drilled for biomedical applications by ultrafast pulsed laser. The ablation and damage characteristics were studied on PE-TEMs by assuming porous thin membranes. The experiments were conducted in the range of 2.02 $J/cm^2$ and 8.07$J/cm^2$. The ablation threshold and damage threshold were found to be 2.56$J/cm^2$ and 1.14$J/cm^2$, respectively. While a conical shaped drilled holes was made in lower fluence region, straight shaped holes were drilled in higher fluence region. Nanoholes made the membrane as porous material and ablation characteristics for both bulk and thin film membranes were compared.

  • Electro Discharge Machining (EDM) is a so-call nonconventional machining technique. This paper presents the experimental results of an EDM technique for the fabircation of microholes on #7440 pyrex glass substrates. With various applied voltages and various concentration of NaOH or KOH solution, the glass substrates have been microdrilled using the copper electrodes of which diameters are 250 ${\mu}m$ to 450 ${\mu}m$. The machined throughholes have been observed the top diameter, the bottom diameter and machining time have been measured. EDM in NaOH solution causes the fabrication to have better the surface condition, higher selective of electrode, lower concentration of solution with respect to EDM in KOH solution machined fabrication.

  • This paper reports experimental results on microdrilling process for silicon parts used in semiconductor equipments. An experimental system was developed consisting of a high speed precision machine, microscope system, and project profile instrument. The experimental results indicate that the amount of chipping at the entrance and exit of micro hole decreases as the spindle speed increases up to 18,000 rpm. At higher spindle speed, however, the amount of chipping increases rapidly. The amount of chipping and infeed rate show proportional relationship up to 20 m/min of infeed rate. Beyond that infeed rate, however, sudden increase in the amount of chipping has occurred.
