A fluxgate magnetic sensor consists of a solenoid excitation coil, pick-up coil, and magnetic core. We presents the effect of magnetic core shape in a micromachined fluxgate sensor. To observe the performance of fluxgate sensor with magnetic core side width and gap, side width of 125 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, 250 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and 500 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were designed in a rectangular-ring shaped core and the gaps of 0 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, 50 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and 100 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were also fabricated in a racetrack shaped core. The solenoid coils and magnetic core were separated by benzocyclobutane(BCB) which had high insulation and good planarization characters. Copper coil patterns of 10 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ width and 6${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ thickness were electroplated on Ti(300 $\AA$) / Cu(1500 $\AA$) seed layers. 3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ thick N $i_{0.8}$F $e_{0.2.}$(permalloy) film for the magnetic core was also electroplated under 2000 gauss to induce the magnetic anisotropy. The magnetic core had the high DC effective permeability of ∼1,300 and coercive field of ∼0.1 Oe. Because the magnetic cores of 500 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ side width and 0 gap had a low magnetic flux leakage, high sensitivity of ∼350 V/T were measured at excitation condition of 3 $V_{P-P}$ and 2 MHz square wave. The power consumption of ∼14 ㎽ was measured. The fabricated fluxgate sensor had the very small actual size of 3.0${\times}$1.7 $\textrm{mm}^2$. When two fluxgates were perpendicularly aligned in terrestrial field, their two-axis output signals were very useful to commercialize an electronic azimuth compass for the portable navigation system.m.m.m.
This paper describes the evaluation and selection of MEMS(Micro-Elect Mechanical System) based inertial sensor to fit to implement the Inertial Measurement Unit(IMU) for a small-sized vessel at sea. At first, the error model and the noise model of the inertial sensors are defined with Euler's equations and then, the inertial sensor evaluation is carried out with Allan Variance techniques and Monte Carlo simulation. As evaluation results for the five sensors, ADIS16405, SAR10Z, SAR100Grade100, LIS344ALH and ADXL103, the combination of gyroscope and accelerometer of ADIS16405 is shown minimum error having around 160 m/s standard deviation of velocity error and around 35 km standard deviation of position error after 600 seconds. Thus, we select the ADIS16405 inertial sensor as a MEMS-based inertial sensor to implement IMU and, the error reducing method is also considered with the search for reference papers.

A surface micro machined angular rate sensor utilizing a vibrating MEMS structure on a silicon has been developed. These tuning fork angular rate sensors are extremely rugged, inherently balanced, and easy to fabricate. The device is fabricated using a temperature compensation method based on automatic gain control technique. A linearity of approximately 0.6%, limited by the on-chip electronics has been obtained with this new sensor. Tests of the sensor demonstrate that its performance is equivalent to that required for implementation of a yaw control system. Vehicle handling and safety are substantially improved using the sensor to implement yaw control.

Recent development of fiber optic sensors and wireless sensor technology, made structural health monitoring of railway structures cost effective. In this paper, a micro bending fiber optic rail pad sensors are evaluated for train axle force measurement. In order to assess the usability of FBG fiber optic sensors for short-term bridge measurement, the FBG sensors and conventional strain gauges are installed at the same points and the strain results are compared. Also the impact factors are calculated using the FBG strain responses and the results are compared with the conventional sensor responses. A running KTX train was instrumented with wireless sensor system to measure the vibration characteristics and the results are compared with conventional wire sensor system.
We report on the building of a micro sensor array based on typical semiconductor fabrication processes aimed at monitoring selectively a specific gas in ambient of other gases. Chemical sensors can be applied for an electronic nose and/or robots using this technique. Microsensor array was fabricated on the same chip using 0.6${\mu}m$ CMOS technology, and unique gas sensing patterns were obtained by principal component analysis from the array. $SnO_2$/Pt sensor for CO gas showed a high selectivity to buthane gas and humidity. $SnO_2$ sensor for hydrogen gas, however, showed a low selectivity to CO and buthane gas. We can obtain more distinguishable patterns that provide the small sensing deviation(the high seletivity) toward a given analyte in the response space than in the chemical space through the specific parameterization of raw data for chemical image formation.
Sensor applications of thin-film transistors (TFTs), such as photosensor, magnetic sensor, temperature sensor and chemical sensor, are introduced. Active-matrix circuits and amplifying circuits using poly-Si TFTs are integrated with these sensors to improve sensor performances and generate additional functions. These sensors may be promising applications after flat-panel displays (FPDs) in giant-micro electronics.
Monitoring the carbon dioxide concentration in arterial blood is vital for the evaluation and prevention of pulmonary disease. Yet, domestic pure arterial blood carbon dioxide sensor technologies are not being developed, instead all sensors are imported. In this paper, we develop a real time monitoring system for arterial blood partial pressure of carbon dioxide($pCO_2$) gas from the wrist by using a carbon micro-heater. The micro-heater was fabricated with a thickness of 0.3 ${\mu}m$ in order to collect the carbon dioxide under the skin. The micro-heater has been designed to perform temperature compensation in order to prevent damage to the skin. Two clinical trials of the system were undertaken. As a result, we demonstrated that a portable, transcutaneous carbon dioxide analysis($TcpCO_2$) device produced domestically is possible. In addition, this system reduced the analysis time significantly. Carbon films could reduce the unit price of these sensors by replacing the gold film used in foreign models. Also, we developed a real time monitoring system which can be used with optical biosensors for medical diagnostics as well as gas sensors for environmental monitoring.

Carbon nitride films were evaluated that they had many advantages for miniature micro-humidity-sensors using the standard CMOS technology humidity sensing properties and CV characteristics of the carbon nitride films have been investigated for fabricating one chip HUSFET(Humidity Sensitive Field Effect Transistor) humidity sensors Carbon nitride films were deposited on silicon substrate with meshed electrodes by reactive RF magnetron sputtering system. The capacitor-type humidity sensor revealed good humidity-impedance characteristics with a wide range of relative humidity changes, decreasing $254k{\Omega}$ to $16k{\Omega}$ according to increase of relative humidity between 5% ~ 95% and the films were very stable on the Si wafer. These results reveal that $CN_x$ thin films can be used for Si based or HUSFET structure one chip micro-humidity sensors.

We studied to detect the mass variation using micro mechanical resonator. For measuring the resonance frequency of the micro mechanical system, optical method using laser interference is selected. A simple resonator is prepared by attaching an AFM cantilever on the piezo stack. The piezo stack makes a the cantilever vibrated with its resonance frequency. To change the mass of the resonator, gold was evaporated on the cantilever. We measured how much resonance frequency was changed according to the amount of gold attached on cantilever. This resonator is able to perform the role of a mass sensor and has a resolution of the order of micrograms. The fabrication of the resonator and measurement setup for detecting the mechanical resonance will be introduced in this presentation.
