  • KEPCO(Korea Electric Power Corporation) is performing the nation's first biogas-MGT project as an effort to encourage the utilization of wasted biogas which contains useful CH4. The goals of this project are to develop the Pretreatment system of Livestock bio-gas and set up the biogas-MGT co-generation system. The project will not only utilze flared biogas as precious energy but also improve the economics of the plant a lot. The pretreatment system mainly consists of sulfur removal tower, biogas compressor and many filtering systems. A computational fluid dynamics study in the bio gas sulfur removal tower and sulfur absorption filter was carried out. Understanding of the flow in the sulfur removal tower and sulfur adsorption filter obtained by this study can be used to identify the problems in the sulfur removal tower and to improve the sulfur removal efficiency of the sulfur removal tower. Resistance material modeling is used to simulate the sulfur adsorption filter, and the resistance coefficient was adjusted to reflect the experimental pressure loss value. And the pressure loss change with the flowrate is predicted

  • Since Paris Climate Change Conference in 2015, many policies to reduce the emission of greenhouse gas have been accelerating, which are mainly related to renewable energy resources and micro-grid. Presently, the technology development and demonstration projects are mostly focused on diversifying the power resources by adding wind turbine, photo-voltaic and battery storage system in the island-type small micro-grid. It is expected that the large-scaled micro-grid projects based on the regional district and town/complex city, e.g. the block type micro-grid project in Daegu national industrial complex will proceed in the near future. In this case, the economic cost or the carbon emission can be optimized by the efficient operation of energy mix and the appropriate construction of electric and heat supplying facilities such as cogeneration, renewable energy resources, BESS, thermal storage and the existing heat and electricity supplying networks. However, when planning a large residential town or city, the concrete plan of the energy infrastructure has not been established until the construction plan stage and provided by the individual energy suppliers of water, heat, electricity and gas. So, it is difficult to build the efficient energy portfolio considering the characteristics of town or city. This paper introduces an energy mix optimization(EMO) method to determine the optimal capacity of thermal and electric resources which can be applied in the design stage of the real large-scaled residential town or city, and examines the feasibility of the proposed method by applying the real heat and electricity demand data of large-scale residential towns with thousands of households and by comparing the result of HOMER simulation developed by National Renewable Energy Laboratory(NREL).

  • MGT fuelled by landfill gas was tested to asses feasibility of its exhaust gas application for $CO_2$ enrichment. The exhaust gas was analyzed during start-up and normal operation with different MGT load conditions. Due to the changes of air/fuel ratio and combustion mode, $O_2$, $CO_2$, CO and NOx concentration were varied within wide ranges during the MGT start-up. Especially, NOx emissioin level was increased up to 20.01 ppmv. Different tendencies of $O_2$, $CO_2$, CO and NOx concentrations were observed with MGT output changes. $O_2$ and CO concentrations were shown to be decreased and NOx and $CO_2$ concentrations were shown to have opposite trends. NOx emission level (0.8~1.88 ppmv) was very low compared to other types of combustion based power generation equipment. Unburned hydrocarbon emission level was substantially decreased with MGT load increase. Especially, $C_2H_4$ concentration was below the detection limit(0.2 ppmv) around the nominal load condition. The exhaust gas from landfill gas fuelled MGT system was shown to be feasible for $CO_2$ fertilization. Concentrations of major components were within or below the maximum allowable ranges.

  • This paper presents the result of a study on the starter control for a turbo generator. Because a starter in gear box type turbo-generator system is composed of gearbox and brush DC motor, it should be replaced with High Speed Generator(HSG)) in HSG type Turbo-generator. There-ore, it is necessary to design a new starting algorithm and starter. In gearbox type system, brush DC motor is rotated to the designed speed using low voltage-high current battery power. After brush DC motor speed is increased to several times by gearbox, gas turbine engine can be rotated to designed starting speed. If we implement a starter with High Speed Generator(HSG), it is necessary to drive high-speed generator to high-speed motor. High-speed generator with permanent magnet on rotor has a low leakage inductance fur driving high-speed rotation, and it is necessary high DC link voltage for inverter when High-speed generator is driven to high speed. This paper presents result of development of the boost converter for converting high voltage DC from low battery voltage and design of the inverter for controlling a high frequency current to be injected to motor winding. Also, we show performance of the designed starter by driving the turbo generator.

  • When problems such as line fault, breakdown of a substation or a generator, etc. arise on the grid, the Microgrid is designed to be separated or isolated from the grid. Most existing DGs(Distributed Generators) in distribution system use rotating machine. However, new DGs such as micro gas turbine, fuel cell, photo voltaic, wind turbine, etc. will be interfaced with the Microgrid through an inverter. So the Microgrid may have very lower inertia than the conventional distribution system. By the way, the rate of change of frequency depends on the inertia of the power system. Moreover, frequency has a strong coupling with active power in power system. Because the frequency of the Microgrid may change rapidly and largely during transient, appropriate and fast control strategy is needed for stable operation of the Microgrid. Therefore, this paper presents a power balancing strategy in Microgrid during transient. Despite of strong power or frequency excursions, power balancing in the Microgrid can be maintained.

  • This paper presents results of the development of the turbo generator system with structure which is HSG(High Speed Generator) installed directly to gas-turbine engine. Turbo generator with a high speed motor-generator directly has many advantages aspects of weight, size, lubrication system and complexity of the system compared of conventional turbo generator system with a gear box. But because of direct high speed operation of the high speed generator, we have to need stable high speed motor driving algorithm for perfect engine ignition when engine start. Also we have to need the design of the Power conditioning unit(PCU) for converting high speed AC output power to conventional AC power or needed DC power.

  • City or Community-scale Energy Management System(CEMS) is used to reduce the total energy consumed in the city by arranging the energy resources efficiently at the planning stage and controlling them economically at the operating stage. Of the operational functions of the CEMS, generation forecasting of renewable energy resources is an essential feature for the effective supply scheduling. This is because it can develop daily operating schedules of controllable generators in the city (e.g. diesel turbine, micro-gas turbine, ESS, CHP and so on) in order to minimize the inflow of the external power supply system, considering the amount of power generated by the uncontrollable renewable energy resources. This paper is written to introduce numerical models for photo-voltaic power generation prediction based on the weather forecasting information. Unlike the conventional methods using the average radiation or average utilization rate, the proposed models are developed for CEMS applications using the realtime weather forecast information provided by the National Weather Service.

  • The thermal barrier coating of a gas turbine blade was degraded by isothermal heating in a furnace and by varying the exposure time and temperature. Then, a micro-Vickers hardness test was conducted on the cross section of the bond coat and Ni-based superalloy substrate. Further, the thickness of TGO(Thermally Grown Oxide) was measured by using an image analyzer, and the changes in the microstructure and element contents in the coating were analyzed by using an optical microscope and by performing SEM-EDX analysis. No significant change was observed in the Vickers hardness of the bond coat when the coated specimen was degraded at a high temperature; delamination was observed between the top coat and the bond coat when the coating was degraded for 50 h at a temperature $1,151^{\circ}C$.

  • A performance analysis of a SOFC/MGT hybrid system has been carried out for concept design. Thermo-dynamic models for each component being able to describe electrochemical characteristics and heat and mate-rial balance are proposed. Estimated is the power capacity of a SOFC suitable for the hybrid operation with a 5kW class MGT. Effects of current density and operating pressure are also investigated. Electric efficiency showed weak dependence on operating pressure and current density. It is desirable that the SOFC operates at high current density in manufacturing cost's point of view though operating with high current density slightly decreases the electric efficiency find specific power.
