  • Rapid progress in urbanization has resulted in a change of the micro climate, especially in the urban area. In order to investigate the phenomenon of the heat island in the residential micro climate, a field survey was carried out by 4 sets of the residential type in Jeonju under typical winter synoptic condition. As analytic methode, it is used the comparison on the relation of the Land-to-Coverage Rate to Heat Island and Oxygen Concentration. And as a key question it is asked how stable characteristics of the micro climate will result from the survey of the Heat Island and the Oxygen Concentration, used as indicator. To ensure the trustworthy result of research, it is calculated the critical influence of the wind velocity and the Land-to-Covearage Rate. As a result of comparative analysis, it could be confirmed that the local temperatures in all sets of the residential type were higher than the average temperature in Jeonju. But the housing type A 'exclusive use for housing zone' has relativly the most stable and best living condition. On the contrary the residential type B and D has the worst toward the oxygen concentration in the time zone 9-12 a.m., which didn't reach the minimum of the oxygen concentration $20.5{\%}.$ It means that the higer the development and population density is, the worse is the situation of the Quality of Life in the residential types in accordance with the heat island and oxygon concentration.

  • The use of plastics in our everyday lives have been drastically increased during the last few decades. However with the usage of commercial plastic products there is a possibility of microplastic consumption, due to the fragmentation of the products. Additionally, the potential for microplastic ingestion may also be increased by using damaged products. Hence, the current study was conducted to understand the potential release of micro/nano plastics and organic matter from damaged teabags. To check the leakage tendency, the amount of damage to the tea bags from 1-10 cm were tested along with temperatures of 25-70℃, and exposure times from 5 min to 1 hr was tested. Release of fibrous micro/nanoplastics, and organic leachate from the damaged teabags were observed to understand the outflow conditions. Results showed that with the increased degree of damage, temperature, and exposure time increased the release of fiberous matter, where the increase of temperature, and exposure time increased organic leachate. Additional analysis confirmed the leachate of nylon polymers into the heated water.

  • This study aimed to conduct the basic analysis on the fractal characteristics of cementitious materials. The pore structure of cement paste incorporating ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) was measured using mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and the fractal characteristics were investigated using different models. Because the pore structure of GGBFS-blended cement paste is an irregular system in the various range from nanometer to millimeter, the characteristics of pore region in the different scale may not be adequately described when the fractal dimension was calculated over the whole scale range. While Zhang and Li model enabled analyzing the fraction dimension of pore structure over the three divided scale ranges of micro, small capillary and macro regions, Ji el al. model refined analysis on the fractal characteristics of micro pore region consisting of micro I region corresponding to gel pores and micro II region corresponding to small capillary pores. As the pore size decreased, both models suggested that the pore surface of micro region became more irregular than macro region and the complexity of pores increased.

  • The Korean Tilting Train eXpress may produced a strong micro-pressure wave in tunnel exit because of large train/tunnel area ration of conventional railways. This micro-pressure wave causes an impulsive noise which is a serious environmental noise pollution near tunnel exit. Tunnel hood can be the method of reducing the micro-pressure wave in tunnel exit. Therefore, parametric studies for tunnel hood are performed with respect to the hood length and size to investigate the effects of the tunnel hood. Also, axi-symmetric unsteady compressible flow solver was used to analyze train-tunnel relative motion. According to the result of numerical analysis, the maximum micro-pressure wave in tunnel exit is reduced by 56% throughout the hood establishment on conventional railways.

  • Increase in the utilization rate of recycled paper has significantly increased the problem associated with stickies. Despite the effort to eliminate contaminants from recycled furnishes, stickies are still the most serious obstacle in using recycled paper. The amount of micro stickies that are too small to be eliminated by screening, tends to increase significantly as the closure level of white water system is increased and the quality of raw material deteriorates. To establish a process efficient in removing micro stickies is strongly required. In this study, the surface characteristic of micro stickies was investigated with contact angle measurement. Surface energies of MCC, PSA film and model micro stickies were 53.37 mN/m, 29.75mN/m, and 29.63mN/m, respectively. This indicates that the surface characteristic of MMS is very similar to PSA. Thus, solvent coating of PSA and evaporation of the solvent provided excellent model micro stickies for flotation experiment.

  • Hydraulic performance of a micro-bubble pump has been analyzed by numerical simulation and experimental measurements. Flow recirculation apparatus between the pump inlet and outlet reserviors has been adopted to measure pump performance according to flow conditions sequentially. To analyze three-dimensional flow field in the micro-bubble pump, general analysis code, CFX, is employed. SST turbulence model is employed to estimate the eddy viscosity and compared the pump performance to k-${\varepsilon}$ model. Unstructured grids are used to represent a composite grid system including blade, casing and inlet casing. It is found that the numerical model used in the present study is effective to evaluate the pump performance. From the numerical simulation, low velocity region due to pressure loss is decreased where pump efficiency has maximum value. Detailed flow field inside the micro-bubble pump is also analyzed and compared.

  • Segmentation of material phases through image analysis is essential for analyzing the microstructure of materials. Micro-CT images exhibit variations in grayscale values depending on the phases constituting the material. Phase segmentation is generally achieved by comparing the grayscale values in the images. In the case of waste concrete used as a recycled aggregate, it is challenging to distinguish between hydrated cement paste and natural aggregates, as these components exhibit similar grayscale values in micro-CT images. In this study, we propose a method for automatically separating the aggregates in concrete, in micro-CT images. Utilizing the Unet-VGG16 deep-learning network, we introduce a technique for segmenting the 2D aggregate images and stacking them to obtain 3D aggregate images. Image filtering is employed to separate aggregate particles from the selected 3D aggregate images. The performance of aggregate segmentation is validated through accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score assessments.

  • The current transportation regime is largely based on two alternatives: (1) fixed route public transit, and (2) private ownership of internal combustion engine (ICE) powered vehicles per households. This paper analyzes one possible transportation alternative, Micro Electric Vehicles or MEVs, and compares with the ICE vehicles in terms of social, economic and environmental benefits, especially emphasizing its environmental advantage over ICE vehicles for future sustainability. While some representative models of MEVs exist in a limited market capacity, but global technical standards are generally insufficient and non-homogenous across nations, which restricts the development of the proposed transportation sector. The focus of this paper is to analyze the characteristics and potential benefits of MEVs in economical and environmental perspectives, including development status and technical standards, with a particular focus in the E.U., the U.S., Japan, and Korea. Based on the data of analysis, this paper aims to derive and propose a cooperative and adaptive global policy framework designed to speed up adoption and expansion of the global MEV market, including passenger and utility vehicles. We propose MEV to be a new mobility segment in the global transportation market because of their advantage in environmental impact, sustainability, overall cost of ownership, and safety.

  • Recently, a number of studies have been conducted on photocatalysts and adsorbents that can remove harmful substances to improve environmental problems related to fine particles. In this study, a porous foam composites were fabricated using palm-based activated carbon having a large amount of micro-pores and foam concrete with a significantly larger total pore volume compared to general construction materials. To evaluate the adsorption potential of fine particles, the pore structure of the foam composites were analyzed. For the analysis of the pore structure of the foam composite, BET and Harkins-jura theory were applied from the measured nitrogen adsorption isotherm. From the results of the analysis, the specific surface area and micro-pore volume of the foam composite containing activated carbon increased significantly compared to Plain. As thereplacement of activated carbon increased, the specific surface area and micro-pore volume of the foam composite tended to increase. It seems that the foam composite has high adsorption performance for gaseous fine particle precursor such as nitrogen oxides.

  • As the distributed generation becomes more reliable and economically feasible, it is expected that a higher application of the distributed generation units would be interconnected to the existing grids. In this context, the Micro Gas Turbines (MGT) by using Bio-gas is being considered as a promising solution. In order to propose a feasible concept of those technologies such as improving environmental effect and economics, we performed a sensitivity study for a biomass fueled MGT using a simulation model. The study consists of 1) the fundamental modeling using manufacturer's technical specifications, 2) the correction with the experimental data, and 3) the prediction of off-design characteristics. The performance analysis model was developed by PEPSE-GT 72, commercial steam/gas turbine simulation technicque.
