With the invention of the inlaying technique for celadon in the latter half of the 12th century, the Koryo potters reached a new height of artistic and scientific achievement in ceramics chemical technology. Inlaid celadon shards, collected in 1991 during the surface investigation of Kangjin kilns found on the southwestern shore of South Korea, were imbedded in epoxy resin and polished for cross-section examination. Backscattered electron images were taken with an electron microprobe equipped with an energy dispersive spectrometer. The spectrometer was also used to determine the composition of micro-areas. Porcelain stone, weathered rock of quartz, mica, and feldspar composition were found to be the raw material for the body and important components in the glaze and white inlay. The close similarity between glaze and black inlay in the microstructure suggests that the glaze material was modified by adding clay with high iron content, such as biotite, for use as black inlay. The deep soft translucent quality of celadon glaze is brought about by its microstructure of bubbles, remnant and devitrified minerals, and the schlieren effect.
Polymerization of tetraethoxysilane on a glass substrate was investigated by remote microwave plasma using argon with portions of nitrous oxide as carrier gas. Transparent layer like a thickness of 0.5 ${\mu}m$ 3 ${\mu}m$ were obtained, differing in chemical composition, depending on plasma power and treatment time as well as on ageing time. In general the milder the treatment and the shorter the ageing was, the higher was the content of organic structural elements in the layer. We have identified that the chemical structure of our samples composed of mainly Si O and Si C groups containing aliphatics, carbonyl groups. These results were obtained by X ray photon spectroscopy, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscope combined with Energy dispersive X ray spectroscopy.
There is no certain definition about advanced drinking water treatment but it is generally known as activated carbon process, membrane process or ozone process which can remove non-conventional pollutants such as taste and odor compounds, and micro-pollutants. There are more than 20 processes related to activated carbon as adsorber or biological activated carbon in Korea. The saturated carbon by pollutants can be reused by reactivation. However, the effect of reactivation on activated carbon is not well-understood in terms of changing physical properties of carbon to adsorption capacity of natural organic matter (NOM). In this study, the effects of reactivation on physical properties of activated carbon were investigated by isotherm and breakthrough of NOM. Ash content was increased from 8% to 13.3%. Iodine number is commonly used as an indicator for performance of reactivation. The iodine number was decreased about 20% after reactivating twice. The degree of reactivation can be evaluated by not only iodine number but also apparent density.
The purpose of this study is to analyze Phenomenon of the residential movement and important factors in the city of Seoul. First, The patterns of residential location during 1975-1994 in terms of macro aspects are to be investigated. Second, Residential patterns among households based on the literature survey data in terms of micro aspects are to be indentified. Methodology applied to the study is regression analysis using 1975-1994statistical data and content analysis based on the literature survey. The results of this study are as follows : 1) The factors of residential movement in the city of Seoul are explained by the changes of the economic structure, residential environment, individual characteristics, and housing policy. That is. the development of transportation systems, the number of homeownership scheme holders, crime rates, increase of residential areas effect on the decrease of the population in the city center of Seoul 2) According to the income groups and resident characteristics, Residential location patterns are different in residential location choice and the scope of spatial migration.
Studies on the optical properties related to the built-in internal field and the carrier localization present in various GaN-based structures are essential not only for the physical interest but in designing practical visible and ultraviolet light emitting device applications with better performance and quantum efficiency. We report on the optical characteristics of various dimensional GaN-based structures such as (i) GaN self-assembled quantum dots grown in Stranski-Krastanov mode (OD), vertically-aligned GaN nanorods (1D), graded-In-content InGaN quantum wells (2D), laterally-overgrown GaN pyramids (3D), and GaN epilayers grown on various substrates. We used a wide variety of optical techniques, such as photoluminescence (PL), PL excitation, micro-PL, cathodoluminescence, optically-pumped stimulated emission, and time-resolved PL spectroscopy. An overview and comparison of the optical characteristics of the above GaN-based structures will be given.
A sub-millimeter scale catalytic combustor with a simple plate-shaped combustion chamber was fabricated. A porous ceramics support coated with platinum catalyst was placed in the chamber. The combustor has a gallium arsenide window on the top that is transparent to infrared ray. The temperature distribution in the combustion chamber was measured using infrared thermal imager while hydrogen-air premixture is steadily supplied to the combustor. The area where the catalytic reaction took place broaden for higher flow rate and lower equivalence ratio made activated area in the combustion chamber broaden. The amount of coated platinum catalyst did not affect the reaction. Stop of reaction, which is similar to flame quenching of conventional combustion, was investigated. Large content of heat generation and broad activated area are essential criteria to prevent stop of reaction that has a bad effect on the combustor performance.
The press formability analysis of welding parts was studied in the current work by the tailor welded blank. The press formability was tested by means of the flash weldability and the formability for two kinds of materials (SPCC & S35C). The results indicate that SPCC & S35C steel sheets showed good weldability and formability after an optimum welding conditions. The independent operation variables were characterized by strength of welding parts, deformation after the welding, press formability of welding parts and productibility of welding. The weldability and the quality of welding parts of the flashed SPCC steel sheet was superior to those of the S35C steel sheet, since a higher carbon content in steel sheet led to a higher hardness. The experimental results were discussed by the evaluation of the results obtained from tensile test, hardness test, micro-structure and V bending test.
Microstructure, mechanical properties, and oxidation resistance of TiAIN thin films deposited on quenched and tempered STD61 tool steel by arc ion plating were studied using XRD, XPS and micro-balance. The TiAIN film was grown with the (200) orientation. The grain size of TiAIN thin film decreased with increasing Al contents, while chemical binding energy increased with Al contents. When hard coating films were oxidized at $850^{\circ}C$ in air, oxidation resistance of both TiN and TiCN films became relatively lower since the surface of films formed non-protective film such as $TiO_2$. However, oxidation resistance of TiAIN film was excellent because its surface formed protective layer such as $_A12$$O_3$ and $_Al2$$Ti_{7}$$O_{15}$, which suppressed oxygen intrusion.
Compressive strength, sulfate deterioration factor(SDF) and length change of 5 types of mortars immersed in sodium sulfate solution were observed. As the results of tests, it was found that the sulfate resistance of blended cement mortars were superior to that of portland cement mortars. Pore volume with diameter larger than 0.1 $\mu\textrm{m}$ of 5 types of pastes indicated that the micro-structures of blended cement pastes were denser, due to pozzolan reaction and latent hydraulic properties, than those of portland cement pastes. The XRD, ESEM, EDS and TG analyses demonstrated that the reactants such as ettringite and gypsum were significantly formed in portland cement pastes. Besides, compared with the $Ca(OH)_2$ content of ordinary portland cement pastes immersed in water and sodium sulfate solution, the $Ca(OH)_2$ contents of fly ash blended cement and ground granulated blast-furnace slag cement paste were about 58% and 28% in water, and 55% and 20% in sodium sulfate solution, respectively.
The effects of $Al_2O_3$ on the crystallization behavior of glass compositions in the $Na_2O$-CaO-$SiO_2$ system were investigated by differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effect of $Al_2O_3$ content on the mechanical properties, density, phase formation, and microstructures of $Na_2O$-CaO-$P_2O_5$-$SiO_2$ glass ceramics were studied. The thermal parameters of each glass were studied by DTA. The density of the glass ceramic samples was measured by Archimedes' method. It was found that the glass-ceramic containing 2.0 molar percent $Al_2O_3$ had desirable sintering behavior and reached an acceptable density. Phase investigation and micro-structural analysis were performed by XRD and SEM, respectively.
