  • The worn crater wear geometry of coated tools after machining has been configured by using Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy(CLSM) and the Wavelet-based filtering technique. The CLSM can be well suited to construct the three-dimensional crater wear on the rake surfaces of coated tips. However, The raw heightness data of HEI(height encoded image) acquired by CLSM must be filtered due to the electronic and imaging noise occurring in constructing the crater image. So the Wavelet-based filtering algorithm is necessary to denoise the shape features in a micro scales so as to realize accurate crater wear topography analysis. The crater wear patterns filtered enable us to predict the crater wear shape in order to study the tool wear evolution. The study shows that the technique by combining the CLSM and Wavelet-based filtering is an excellent one to obtain the geometries of worn tool rake surfaces over a wide range of surface resolution in a micro scale.

  • This paper presents a new scheme of neural network controller to improve the robustuous of robot manipulator using digital signal processors. Digital signal processors, DSPs, are micro-processors that are particularly developed for fast numerical computations involving sums and products of variables. Digital version of most advanced control algorithms can be defined as sums and products of measured variables, thus it can be programmed and executed through DSPs. In addition, DSPs are as fast in computation as most 32-bit micro-processors and yet at a fraction of their prices. These features make DSPs a viable computational tool in digital implementation of sophisticated controllers. During past decade it was proposed the well-established theorys for the adaptive control of linear systems, but there exists relatively little general theory for the adaptive control of nonlinear systems. Perforating of the proposed controller is illustrated. This paper describes a new approach to the design of adaptive controller and implementation of real-time control for assembling robotic manipulator using digital signal processor. • Recent advances in energetic materials modeling and high-resolution hydrocode simulation enable enhanced computational analysis of bio-medical treatments that utilize high-pressure shock waves. Of particular interest is in designing devices that use such technology in medical treatments. For example, the generated micro shock waves with peak pressure on orders of 10 GPa can be used for treatments such as kidney stone removal, transdermal micro-particle delivery, and cancer cell removal. In this work, we present a new computational methodology for applying the high explosive dynamics to bio-medical treatments by making use of high pressure shock physics and multi-material wave interactions. The preliminary calculations conducted by the in-house code, GIBBS2D, captures various features that are observed from the actual experiments under the similar test conditions. We expect to gain novel insights in applying explosive shock wave physics to the bio-medical science involving drug injection. Our forthcoming papers will illustrate the quantitative comparison of the modeled results against the experimental data.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide basic data for utilization in environment-friendly and economically outstanding CSG construction method by physical and mechanical properties of CSG materials including characteristics of uniaxial compressive strength, microscopic structure and freezing and thawing resistance in accordance with the cement content and curing time of the cement, and size of specimen. In this study, specimens with cement content of 4, 6, 8 and 10% of the total weight were, and, in order to examine the characteristics of the sizes of specimen, specimens with ${\Phi}50{\times}100mm$, ${\Phi}100{\times}200mm$ and ${\Phi}150{\times}300mm$ were manufactured to assess the features including compressive strength, microscopic structure, freezing and thawing, and degree of wet-dry. As results, it was found that with greater size specimen or contents of cement in the specimen, compressive strength, freezing and thawing resistance, and wet-dry resistance increase. Moreover, reactive products for each size of specimen were examined and it was possible to verify that some typical needle structured ettringite was generated due to blending of cement through microscopic structure analysis such as SEM and EDS analysis.

  • This paper introduces a technology for robust and low maintenance cost sensor network capable to detect accelerations below a micro-g in a wide frequency bandwidth (above 1,000 Hz). Sensor networks with such performance are critical for navigation, seismology, acoustic sensing, and for the health monitoring of civil structures. The approach is based on the fabrication of an array of high sensitivity accelerometers, each utilizing Fabry-Perot cavity with wavelength-dependent reflectivity to allow embedded optical detection and serialization. The unique feature of the approach is that no local power source is required for each individual sensor. Instead one global light source is used, providing an input optical signal which propagates through an optical fiber network from sensor-to-sensor. The information from each sensor is embedded onto the transmitted light as an intrinsic wavelength division multiplexed signal. This optical "rainbow" of data is then assessed providing real-time sensing information from each sensor node in the network. This paper introduces the Fabry-Perot based accelerometer and examines its critical features, including the effects of imperfections and resolution estimates. It then presents serialization techniques for the creation of systems of arrayed sensors and examines the effects of serialization on sensor response. Finally, a fabrication process is proposed to create test structures for the critical components of the device, which are dynamically characterized.

  • Distribution features of foulers attached on 28 ships of 6 main shipping routes (SR) of the Far East Sea Basin were analyzed using various statistical methods. Collections obtained during 1976-1990 in the expeditions by the Institute of Marine Biology were used for the analyses. Samples were taken from the ships during anchorage by SCUBA diving and from dry-docks of Vladivostok ship-repairing yard. In all cases, the distribution patterns of most animals and algal species showed clear contagious patterns. Total biomass of fouling organisms and biomass of attached animals frequently increased along the horizontal direction of ship hulls, from the stem to the sternpost. Animal and algal species were usually located at different sites of the hulls. According to the increasing floating speed, there was, a clear tendency of the displacement in main fouling biomass from the stem to the stem. Any generalizations and deductions concerning the distribution patterns of the foulers from the same SR ships are not always substantiated, but one may see some similarities of the fouler distributions in many cases. Micro-scale turbulence generated by water flow around a ship hull for the distribution of fouling organisms is discussed.

  • MEMS(Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems) 분야의 급격한 발전은 저비용의 정보 처리 센싱 능력을 갖춘 센서의 발전에 박차를 가했다.

  • A new method to measure residual stress in micron and nano scale films is described. In the theory it is based on Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics. And in the techniques it depends on the combined capability of the focused ion beam (FIB) imaging system and of high-resolution digital image correlation (DIC) software. The method can be used for any film material (whether amorphous or crystalline) without thinning the substrate. In the method, a region of the film surface is highlighted and scanning electron images of that region taken before and after a long slot, depth a, is introduced using the FIB. The DIC software evaluates the displacement of the surface normal to the slot due to the stress relaxation by using features on the film surface. To minimize the influence of signal noise and rigid body movement, not a few, but all of the measure displacements are used for determining the real residual stress. The accuracy of the method has been assessed by performing measurements on a nano film of diamond like carbon (DLC) on glass substrate and on micro film of aluminum oxide thermally grown on Fecrally substrate. It is shown that the new method determines the residual stress ${\sigma}_R=-1.73$ GPa for DLC and ${\sigma}_R=-5.45$ GPa for the aluminum oxide, which agree quite well with ones measured independently.
