In this paper, the pumping performance of a piezoelectric valveless micropump is simulated with a commercial finite element analysis software, COMSOL Multiphysics. The micropump developed in the previous work is composed of a 4-layer lightweight piezo-composite actuator (LIPCA), a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) pump chamber, and two diffusers. The piezoelectric domain, structural domain and fluid domain are coupled in the simulation. Water flow rates are numerically predicted for geometric parameters of the micropump. Based on this study, the micropump is optimally designed to obtain its highest pumping performance.

A micro-processor based control system for a brushless DC motor used in the motor-driven electromechanical total artificial heart was developed. Functionally, the control system is composed of two parts. The first part is the velocity and position controller to assure that the motor follows a predetermined optimal velocity profile with minimal energy consumption, and to guarantee the full stroke length. This part also utilize the passive adaptive control method to be robust against the load disturbance, system parameter variation, and uncertainty which is the environment of artificial heart system. The pump output control is the second part, and this part provides the required responses of the artificial heart to the time-varying physiologic demands. The basic requirements of these responses are preload sensitivity, afterload insensitivity, and the balanced ventricular outputs. The performance and reliability of this control system was evaluated through a series of mock circulation tests and animal implantation, and the results are very encouraging.

In this paper, a valveless bubble-actuated fluid micropump was has been developed and its performance was tested. The valveless micropump consists of the lower plate, the middle plate, the upper plate and a resistive heater. The lower plate includes the nozzle-diffuser elements and the double-chamber. Nozzle-diffuser elements and a double-chamber are fabricated on the silicon wafer by the DRIE(Deep Reactive Ion Etching) process. The lower plate also has inlet/outlet channels for fluid flow. The middle plate is made of glass and plays the role of the diaphragm. The chamber in the upper plate is filled with deionized water, and which contacts with the resistive heater. The resistive heater is patterned on a silicon substrate by Ti/Pt sputtering. Three plates and the resister heater are laminated by the aligner and bonded in the anodic bonder. Since the bubble is evaporated and condensed periodically in the chamber, the fluid flows from inlet to outlet with respect to the diffusion effect. In order to avoid backflow, the double chamber system is introduced. Analytical and experimental results show the validity of the developed double-chamber micropump.

We present a multi-sample array device based on a pneumatic system. Solenoid valves were used to control a micro valve in a pneumatic system. The use of a compressor together with a vacuum pump ensured that one outlet could supply both compression and vacuum pressure. The multi-sample array device was fabricated using conventional photolithography and PDMS casting. The device was composed of a multiplexer, sample array, and rinsing. The multiplexer could control four sample solutions injecting into the sample array chamber. Sample solution not arrayed was removed by DI-water from the rinsing inlet. To prevent trapping of microbubbles in the channel during injection of sample solution into the device, surfactant was added in PDMS solution to serve as a hydrophilic surface treatment. As a result, the device could be used as a sample array for 64 cases, using four samples and three columns of three chambers.

In this study a numerical analysis has been conducted for the flow characteristics and pumping performance of a piezoelectric-based micropump with electromagnetic resistance exerted on electrically conducting fluid. Here, electromagnetic resistance is alternately applied at the inlet and outlet with alternately applied magnetic fields in association with the reciprocal membrane motion of the piezoelectric-based micropump. A model of Prescribed Deformation is used for the description of the membrane motion. The internal flow characteristics and pumping performance are investigated with the variation of magnetic flux density, tube size, displacement of membrane and the frequency of the membrane. It turns out that the current micropump has a wide range of pumping flow rate compared with diffuser-nozzle based micropumps.
In this paper, we present a pH measurement method that uses a microcantilever-array-based biosensor system. It is composed of microcantilever array, liquid cell, micro syringe pump, laser diode array, position sensitive detector, data acquisition device, and data processing software. Four microcantilevers are functionalized with pH-sensitive MHA(mercaptohexadecanoic acid) as a probe, while three microcantilevers are functionalized with HDT(hexadecane thiol) as reference. We prepare PBS(phosphate buffered saline) solutions of different pH and inject them into the liquid cell with a predefined volumetric speed at regular time intervals. The functionalized mircocantilevers in the liquid cell deflect as a self-assembled monolayer on the microcantilever binds with probe molecules in the solution. The difference in deflection between the MHA-covered probe microcantilever and the HDT-covered reference microcantilever was used to compensate for thermal drift. The deflection difference clearly increases with increasing pH in the solution. It was shown that when the pH values of the PBS solutions are high, there were large variations in the deflection of microcantilevers, whereas there were small variations for low pH value. The experimental results show that the microcantilever array functionalized with MHA and HDT can detect pH value with good repeatability.

Fuel cell power system was developed for high-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Liquid chemical hydride was selected as a fuel due to its high energy density. Liquid storage of the fuel is an ideal alternative solution of the existing compressed hydrogen storage. The fueling system that extracts hydrogen from chemical hydride consists of catalytic reactor, micro-pump, fuel cartridge, separator, and controller. The fuel cell power system including the fueling system and the fuel cell that generates electricity was integrated into a proposed UAV. The performance verification of the fuel cell power system was performed to use as a power plant of the UAV.
This study was accomplished to get the foundation design data of VMD(Vacuum Membrane Distillation) system for Solar Thermal VMD plant. VMD experiment was designed to evaluate thermal performance of VMD using PVDF(polyvinylidene fluoride) hollow fiber hydrophobic membranes. The total membrane surface area in a VMD module is $5.3m^2$. Experimental equipments to evaluate VMD system consists of various parts such as VMD module, heat exchanger, heater, storage tank, pump, flow meter, micro filter. The experimental conditions to evaluate VMD module were salt concentration, temperature, flow rate of feed sea water. Salt concentration of feed water were used by aqueous NaCl solutions of 25g/l, 35g/l and 45g/l concentration. As a result, increase in permeate flux of VMD module is due to the increasing feed water temperature and feed water flow rate. Also, decrease in permeate flux of VMD module is due to increasing salinity of feed water. VMD module required about 590 kWh/day of heating energy to produce $1m^3/day$ of fresh water.
For the photoproduction of molecular hydrogen by photosynthetic bacteria in outdoor conditions, we constructed automatically controlled semi-continuous culture system. When the amount of hydrogen gas produced can be measured by a gas meter with a pulse generator, the same amount of substrate consumed for hydrogen production could be supplied by micro pump related with timers. Using the apparatus, we examined hydrogen production with immobilized cells of Rhodopseudomonas sPhaeroides B6 in outdoor conditions. In spite of severe fluctuation of weather and illumination, the culture was maintained under good control with regard to hydrogen productivity. It was possible to automate the semi-continuous outdoor culture of photosynthetic bacteria for hydrogen production.

In conventional solar energy harvesting systems, continuous perturbation techniques of the duty cycle or switching frequency of a power converter have been used to implement MPPT(Maximum Power Point Tracking) control. In this paper, we propose a new MPPT technique to control the duty cycle of a power switch powering a power converter. The proposed circuit is designed in 0.35um CMOS process, and the designed chip area including pads is $770um{\times}800um$.
