This paper presents a new nonlocal Hyperbolic Shear Deformation Beam Theory (HSDBT) for the free vibration of porous Functionally Graded (FG) nanobeams. A new displacement field containing integrals is proposed which involves only three variables. The present model incorporates the length scale parameter (nonlocal parameter) which can capture the small scale effect and its account for shear deformation by a hyperbolic variation of all displacements through the thickness without using the shear correction factor. It has been observed that during the manufacture of Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs), micro-voids and porosities can occur inside the material. Thus, in this work, the investigation of the free vibration analysis of FG beams taking into account the influence of these imperfections is established. Four different porosity types are considered for FG nanobeam. Material characteristics of the FG beam are supposed to vary continuously within thickness direction according to a power-law scheme which is modified to approximate material characteristics for considering the influence of porosities. Based on the nonlocal differential constitutive relations of Eringen, the equations of motion of the nanobeam are derived using Hamilton's principle. The effects of nonlocal parameter, aspect ratio, and the porosity types on the dynamic responses of the nanobeam are discussed.

In this paper, the effect of porosity on the acoustic phase velocity of the 3D printed Kelvin closed-cell structure was investigated using the spectral phase analysis. Since Kelvin cells bring about the large amount of scattering, acoustic pulses in ultrasonic measurements undergoes a distortion of waveforms due to the dispersion effect. In order to take account on the dispersion, mathematical expressions for calculating the phase velocity of longitudinal waves propagating normal to the plane of the Kelvin structure are suggested by introducing a complex wave number based on Fourier transform. 3D Kelvin structure composed of identical unit-cells, a polyhedron of 14 faces with 6 quadrilateral and 8 hexagonal faces, was developed and fabricated by 3D CAD and 3D printer to represent the micro-structure of porous materials such as aluminum foam and cancellous bone. Total nine samples of 3D Kelvin structure with different porosity were made by changing the thickness of polyhedron. Ultrasonic pulse of 1MHz center frequency was applied to the Kelvin structures for the measurement of the phase velocity of ultrasound using the TOF(time-of-flight) and the phase spectral method. From the experimental results, it was found that the acoustic phase velocity decreased linearly with the porosity.

This paper discussed micro - structure of skin concrete to understand transport properties from surface and seek thickness from surface which is seriously influenced on durability. Concrete at nearer surface has high porosity relative to inner concrete. The porosity of concrete and ISAT value at region from surface to 20 mm depth is decreased with depth. On the other hand, according to the result of ASTM C 1202 with specimen thickness, critical depth which affects fast ionic penetration through interfacial transition zone (ITZ) equals 35mm and the critical depth would be directly influenced by the effects of ITZ on chloride diffusion unrelated with W/C ratio.
The use of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) from steel industries waste is showing perspective application in civil engineering as partial substitute to cement. Use of such waste conserves natural resources and minimizes the space required for landfill. The GGBFS used in the present work is of ultra fine size and hence serves as micro filler. In this paper strength and durability characteristics of ultra fine slag based high strength concrete (HSC) (with a characteristic compressive strength of 50 MPa) were studied. Cement was replaced with ultra fine slag in different percentages of 5, 10, and 15% to study the compressive strength, porosity, resistances against sulfate attack, sorptivity and chloride ion penetration. The experiments to study compressive strength were conducted for different ages of concrete such as 7, 28, 56, and 90 days. From the detailed investigations with 16 mix combinations, 10% ultra fine slag give better results in terms of strength and durability characteristics.

Theoretical models based on modern interpretations of the morphology and interactions of cement hydration products are developed for prediction of the mechanical properties of hydrated cement paste (hcp). The models are based on the emerging nanostructural vision of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) morphology, and account for the intermolecular interactions between nano-scale calcium C-S-H particles. The models also incorporate the effects of capillary porosity and microcracking within hydrated cement paste. The intrinsic modulus of elasticity and tensile strength of hydrated cement paste are determined based on intermolecular interactions between C-S-H nano-particles. Modeling of fracture toughness indicates that frictional pull-out of the micro-scale calcium hydroxide (CH) platelets makes major contributions to the fracture energy of hcp. A tensile strength model was developed for hcp based on the linear elastic fracture mechanics theories. The predicted theoretical models are in reasonable agreements with empirical models developed based on the experimental performance of hcp.
In this work, the activated carbons (ACs) with high porosity were synthesized from pitch by KOH chemical activation. The structure and surface properties of ACs were characterized by means of elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS). And, the influence of the KOH-to-pitch ratio on the porosity of the ACs was investigated using the nitrogen adsorption isotherms at 77 K and a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). As a result, pitch could be successfully converted into ACs with well-developed micro and mesopores. The specific surface areas and pore volumes were increased with an increase of the KOH-to-pitch ratio. Furthermore, it was found that the addition of KOH led to the transformation of the micropores to the meso- and macropores. In the application to electric double layer capacitors (EDLC), the pitch-based ACs showed a higher capacitance per weight and per volume, and an excellent electrochemical stability in the high voltage region.
High quality X-ray computed microtomography (micro-CT) imaging of internal microstructures and pore space in geomaterials is often hampered by some inherent noises embedded in the images. In this paper, we introduce image calibration techniques for removing the most common noises in X-ray micro-CT, cupping (brightness difference between the periphery and central regions) and ring artifacts (consecutive concentric circles emanating from the origin). The artifacts removal sequentially applies coordinate transformation, normalization, and low-pass filtering in 2D Fourier spectrum to raw CT-images. The applicability and performance of the techniques are showcased by describing extraction of 3D pore structures from micro-CT images of porous basalt using artifacts reductions, binarization, and volume stacking. Comparisions between calibrated and raw images indicate that the artifacts removal allows us to avoid the overestimation of porosity of imaged materials, and proper calibration of the artifacts plays a crucial role in using X-ray CT for geomaterials.

Recently, in Korea, there has been an increasing number of research papers published which are to improve durability of concrete, particularly by analyzing correlation between diffusivity of chloride and porosity/pore size distribution. In these studies, such test methods as mercury intrusion porosimetry(MIP), gas adsorption or image analysis method are used to analyze the microstructure of materials while MIP is most widely used for concrete. This study analyzes the results of porosity and pore size distribution of paste and concrete adding fly ash or blast furnace slag by using MIP equipment which is widely used for determining micro-porosity structure of cementitious materials. A variation in porosity and pore size distribution at the curing day 3, 7 and 28 has been observed by using MIP equipment for cement paste 35%, 40%, 45%, 50%, 55%, 60% of W/C when using $300kg/m^3$ of cement, 35%, 45%, 55% of W/C when replaced 60% with blast-furnace slag, and 35%, 45%, 55% of W/C when replaced 30% with fly ash. For long-term water cured normal OPC concrete and mixed concrete replaced 60% with blast-furnace slag powder, micro-structure of the sample has been analyzed by using MIP equipment when W/C indicated 40%, 45%, 50% respectively and the binder varied $300kg/m^3$, $350kg/m^3$, $400kg/m^3$, and $450kg/m^3$.
We explore the effect of particle shape and size on 3-dimensional (3D) network and pore structure of porous earth materials composed of glass beads and silica gel using NMR micro-imaging in order to gain better insights into relationship between structure and the corresponding hydrologic and seismological properties. The 3D micro-imaging data for the model porous networks show that the specific surface area, porosity, and permeability range from 2.5 to $9.6\;mm^2/mm^3$, from 0.21 to 0.38, and from 11.6 to 892.3 D (Darcy), respectively, which are typical values for unconsolidated sands. The relationships among specific surface area, porosity, and permeability of the porous media are relatively well explained with the Kozeny equation. Cube counting fractal dimension analysis shows that fractal dimension increases from ~2.5-2.6 to 3.0 with increasing specific surface area from 2.5 to $9.6\;mm^2/mm^3$, with the data also suggesting the effect of porosity. Specific surface area, porosity, permeability, and cube counting fractal dimension for the natural mongolian sandstone are $0.33\;mm^2/mm^3$, 0.017, 30.9 mD, and 1.59, respectively. The current results highlight that NMR micro-imaging, together with detailed statistical analyses can be useful to characterize 3D pore structures of various porous earth materials and be potentially effective in accounting for transport properties and seismic wave velocity and attenuation of diverse porous media in earth crust and interiors.
Present disquisition proposes an analytical solution method for exploring the buckling characteristics of porous magneto-electro-elastic functionally graded (MEE-FG) plates with various boundary conditions for the first time. Magneto electro mechanical properties of FGM plate are supposed to change through the thickness direction of plate. The rule of power-law is modified to consider influence of porosity according to two types of distribution namely even and uneven. Pores possibly occur inside FGMs due the result of technical problems that lead to creation of micro-voids in these materials. The variation of pores along the thickness direction influences the mechanical and physical properties. Four-variable tangential-exponential refined theory is employed to derive the governing equations and boundary conditions of porous FGM plate under magneto-electrical field via Hamilton's principle. An analytical solution procedure is exploited to achieve the non-dimensional buckling load of porous FG plate exposed to magneto-electrical field with various boundary condition. A parametric study is led to assess the efficacy of material graduation exponent, coefficient of porosity, porosity distribution, magnetic potential, electric voltage, boundary conditions, aspect ratio and side-to-thickness ratio on the non-dimensional buckling load of the plate made of magneto electro elastic FG materials with porosities. It is concluded that these parameters play remarkable roles on the dynamic behavior of porous MEE-FG plates. The results for simpler states are confirmed with known data in the literature. Presented numerical results can serve as benchmarks for future analyses of MEE-FG plates with porosity phases.
