Germanium-based pinning dopants for MgB2 bulk superconductors

  • Effects of the spherically shaped Ge and the rod-like carbon-coated Ge on the superconducting properties of $MgB_2$ were investigated. Pure Ge and carbon-coated Ge nano-powders were synthesized under the different amount of $CH_4$ (0 to 5 kPa) by using DC thermal plasma method. When the $CH_4$ was added ~100 nm sized Ge with a spherical shape changed to rod-like morphology with a diameter of ~30-70 nm and a length of ~400-500 nm. Also it was confirmed that thin carbon layers of a few nanometers were formed along the rod length and the agglomerated carbons were found on the edges of rods. Pure spherical Ge and Ge/C rods were mixed and milled with Mg & B precursor to form the doped $MgB_2$ bulk samples by the solid-state reaction method. Almost no change of $T_c$ was noticed for the pure Ge-added $MgB_2$, whereas $T_c$ was found to decrease with the Ge/C-added $MgB_2$ samples. It was found that the pure spherical Ge showed to have a negative effect on the flux pinning of $MgB_2$. However, Ge/C rods can enhance the flux pinning property of $J_c$ due to the coated carbon on Ge rods.

  • The consumption of catchup is increasing due to the raising of income level and food industry and westernization of dietary life followed by economic growth. In this paper I picked up three kinds of food produced by two foreign food companies and three kinds of food by two domestic companies.   • The effects of $B_2O_3$ addition on the low-temperature sintering behavior and microwave dielectric properties of $(Zn_{0.8}Mg_{0.2})TiO_3$ ceramic system were investigated. Highly dense samples were obtained at the sintering temperatures below $900^{\circ}C$. The $Q{\times}f_o$ values were determined by the microstructures and sintering shrinkages which are affected by the amount of $B_2O_3$ and sintering temperature. Temperature coefficient of resonance frequency($T_f$) changes to a positive value with increasing the amount of $B_2O_3$ due to the increased amount of rutile phase which is one of the reaction products between $(Zn_{0.8}Mg_{0.2})TiO_3$ and $B_2O_3$. For $6.19 moi.{\%}B_2O_3$-added $(Zn_{0.8}Mg_{0.2})TiO_3$ system, it exhibits ${\epsilon}_r$ = 23.5, $Q{\times}f_o$ = 53,000 GHz, and $T_f$ = 0 ppm/$^{\circ}C$ when sintered at $900^{\circ}C$ for 5 h.

  • We investigated the effects of the irradiation of light-ions on the superconducting $MgB_2$ thin films fabricated by using HPCVD. Deuterium and helium ions were irradiated on $MgB_2$ thin films by various doses, from $1{\times}10^{10}cm^{-2}\;to\;8{\times}10^{15}cm^{-2}$. During these experiments some reasonable results and unpredictable results have been obtained. The reasonable results are that the peak of the reduced maximum pinning force shifts by increasing the pinning sites in $MgB_2$ films and the slightly change of critical current density of films. We obtained some unusual results, which are the increasing of the transition temperature and the change of residual resistance ratio. Among the data of deuterium and helium ion irradiation experiments, the results of helium ion irradiation have most notable points so we will discuss mainly about helium irradiation experiments.

  • The Characterization of $MgB_2$ Thin Film by Slow Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy Enhance signal-to-noise ratio, slow positron coincidence Doppler Broadening method has been applied to study of characteristics of $MgB_2$ superconductor film, which were performed at 30 K and 50 K sample temperature near Tc of it. In this investigation the numerical analysis of the Doppler spectra was employed to the determination of the shape parameter, S, defined as the ratio between the amount of counts in a central portion of the spectrum and the total counts of whole spectrum. The S-parameter values were increased then decreased while the positron implantation energies were increasing, that indicated the diffusion into the samples. The S-parameters of the anisotropic 1 ${\mu}m$ $MgB_2$ thin film which were implanted by positrons at 10 keV are 0.567 at 30 K and 0.570 at 50 K. It is believed that the positrons annihilate with normal-electrons instead of super-electrons in the $MgB_2$ superconductor.

  • We report refinement of crystalline boron by an attrition ball milling system and the superconducting properties of the $MgB_2$ pellets prepared from the refined boron. In this work, we have conducted the ball milling with only crystalline boron powder, in order to improve homogeneity and control the grain size of the $MgB_2$ that is formed from it. We observed that the crystalline responses in the ball-milled boron became broader and weaker when the ball-milling time was further increased. On the other hand, the $B_{2}O_{3}$ peak became stronger in the powders, resulting in an increase in the amount of MgO within the $MgB_2$ volume. The main reason for this is a greater oxygen uptake. From the perspective of the superconducting properties, however, the sample prepared from boron that was ball milled for 5 hours showed an improvement of critical current density ($J_c$), even with increased MgO phase, under an external magnetic field at 5 and 20 K.

Callus Induction and Plant Regeneration in Hordeum spontaneum (Hordeum spontaneum에서의 callus 유기와 식물체 양생)

  • Immature embryos of Hordeum spontaneum were cultured on B5 and CI medium (Cheng's modified MS) to induce callus formation. CI media containing lmg/$\ell$ and 2mg/$\ell$ 2,4-D were more effective than B5 medium with lmg/$\ell$ 2,4-D for the initiation of callus. Total 883 calli were induced from 1,060 immature embryos plated. Callus induction frequency was 83%. Calli were transferred to differentiation media after one subculture to regenerate plants. Forty six plants were regenerated from 608 calli. Seventeen plants were chlorophyll deficient. There was no significant difference for plant regeneration among genotypes and media effects in calli which had been induced from immature embryos of seven types of trisomies. The overall regeneration frequency was 7.6%.

Nonlocality effects of MgB2 superconductor

  • Magnetic properties of MgB2 superconducting powder were investigated. M(H), the magnetic field H dependence of magnetization M, was measured and analyzed using a PPMS instrument. The MgB2 superconducting powder showed high critical current density Jc > ~ 107 A/cm2 and clean limit superconducting properties. The equilibrium magnetization Meq properties of MgB2 powders exhibiting various superconducting properties were studied. We find that the equilibrium magnetization Meq(H) properties of MgB2 powders showing conventional BCS properties deviate from the predictions of the standard local-London theory at temperatures below T = 19 K and are in good agreement with the generalized nonlocal-London theory. Nonlocal-London analysis was used to determine and analyze the nonlocal parameters. The temperature dependence of the London penetration depth values λ(T) was studied.

  • B₂O₃침가에 따른 (Zn/sub 0.8.Mg/sub 0.2/)TiO₃계 세라믹스의 마이크로파 유전특성에 대하여 연구하였다. B₂O₃의 침가량에 비례하여 B₂O₃와 (Zn/sub 0.8.Mg/sub 0.2/)TiO₃와외 반응에 의한 TiO₂ 석출물의 양이 증가하며 공진주파수 온도계수가 증가하였다. 소결온도에 따라 액상의 양, 미세조직, TiO₂와 2차상의 석출거동이 상이하게 나타났다. 6.19mo1.% B₂O₃물 첨가한 시편을 900℃에서 5시간 소결시 ε/sub r/ = 23.5, Q×f/sub o/ = 67,500 ㎓, T/sub f/ = -1.42 ppm/℃의 우수한 마이크로파 유전특성을 얻을 수 있었다.
