The plan for obtaining a good combination of strength and castability appeared feasible and the following observations were made. 1. In Al-12Mg-6.6Zn-xSi alloys, more primary $Mg_2Si$ phase formed with reduced $Al_3Mg_2$ phase, as Si content is necessary for an effective solution heat treatment because the solidus temperature is very low silicon contents. 2. A high tensile strength could be obtained in the heat-treated Al-12Mg-5.5Zn-5Si alloy attributed in the heat-treated Al-12Mg-5.5Zn-5Si alloy attributes to fine $MgZn_2$ particles that precipitated uniformly in the matrix. 3. Al-12Mg-5.5Zn-Si alloys showed excellent casting capabilities such as hot cracking resistance and fluidity compared to the reference commercial alloys. 4. The wear resistance of Al-12Mg-5.5Zn-5Si alloy was superior to that of A7075 alloy, and even higher resistance is expected if the morphology and size of primary $Mg_2Si$ phase is carefully controlled.

In this study, the Zn-Mg alloy coatings with various Mg contents were deposited using an unbalanced magnetron sputtering process. Their surface microstructure, chemical composition, phase, and corrosion property were investigated. The microstructure of the Zn-Mg coatings changed from porous microstructure to dense one with increasing Mg contents in the coatings. As Mg contents in coatings increased, intermetallic phases such as $Mg_2Zn_{11}$ and $MgZn_2$ were detected from X-ray diffraction (XRD) results. The corrosion resistance of the Zn-Mg alloy coatings was investigated quantitatively using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurement with 3.5% NaCl solution. The results of EIS measurement showed that the charge transfer resistance and the phase angle of the Zn-Mg alloy coatings were increased from $162.1{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$ to $558.8{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$ and from about $40^{\circ}$ to $60^{\circ}$ with increasing Mg contents from 5.1 wt.% to 15.5 wt.% in the coatings. These results demonstrate that the Zn-Mg coatings with increasing Mg contents showed an enhanced corrosion resistance.
In this study, the age-hardening behavior and tensile properties of a cast AZ91-0.3Ca-0.2Y (SEN9) alloy are investigated and compared with those of a commercial AZ91 alloy. Even after homogenization heat treatment, the SEN9 alloy contains numerous undissolved secondary phases, Al8Mn4Y, Al2Y, and Al2Ca, which results in a higher hardness value than the homogenized AZ91 alloy. Under aging condition at 200 ℃, both the AZ91 and SEN9 alloys exhibit the same peak-aging time of 8 h, but the peak hardness of the latter (86.8 Hv) is higher than that of the former (83.9 Hv). The precipitation behavior of Mg17Al12 phase during aging significantly differs in the two alloys. In the AZ91 alloy, the area fraction of Mg17Al12 discontinuous precipitates (DPs) increases up to ~50% as the aging time increases. In contrast, in the SEN9 alloy, the formation and growth of DPs during aging are substantially suppressed by the Ca- or Y-containing particles, which leads to the formation of only a small amount of DPs with an area fraction of ~4% after peak aging. Moreover, the size and interparticle spacing of Mg17Al12 precipitates of the peak-aged SEN9 alloy are smaller than those of the peak-aged AZ91 alloy. The homogenized AZ91 alloy exhibits a higher tensile strength than the homogenized SEN9 alloy due to the finer grains of the former. However, the peak-aged SEN9 alloy has a higher tensile elongation than the peak-aged AZ91 alloy due to the smaller amount of brittle DPs in the former.

The effect of annealing on the pitting corrosion resistance of anodized Al-Mg alloy (AA5052) processed by equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) was investigated by electrochemical techniques in a solution containing 0.2 mol/L of $AlCl_3$ and also by surface analysis. The Al-Mg alloy was annealed at a fixed temperature between 473 and 573 K for 120 min in air after ECAP. Anodizing was conducted for 40 min at $100-400A/m^2$ at 293 K in a solution containing 1.53 mol/L of $H_2SO_4$ and 0.0185 mol/L of $Al_2(SO_4)_3$. The internal stress generated in anodic oxide films during anodization was measured with a strain gauge to clarify the effect of ECAP on the pitting corrosion resistance of anodized Al-Mg alloy. The time required to initiate the pitting corrosion of anodized Al-Mg alloy was shorter in samples subjected to ECAP, indicating that ECAP decreased the pitting corrosion resistance. However, the pitting corrosion resistance was greatly improved by annealing after ECAP. The time required to initiate pitting corrosion increased with increasing annealing temperature. The strain gauge attached to Al-Mg alloy revealed that the internal stress present in the anodic oxide films was compressive stress, and that the stress was larger with ECAP than without. The compressive internal stress gradually decreased with increasing annealing temperature. Scanning electron microscopy showed that cracks occurred in the anodic oxide film on Al-Mg alloy during initial corrosion and that the cracks were larger with ECAP than without. The ECAP process of severe plastic deformation produces large internal stresses in the Al-Mg alloy; the stresses remain in the anodic oxide films, increasingthe likelihood of cracks. It is assumed that the pitting corrosion is promoted by these cracks as a result of the higher internal stress resulting from ECAP. The improvement in the pitting corrosion resistance of anodized AlMg alloy as a result of annealing appears to be attributable to a decrease in the internal stresses in anodic oxide films

The galvanic anodes have three kinds of Zn alloy anode, Al alloy anode and Mg alloy anode, which are widely used in cathodic protection for all metal structures in water or under ground. This paper to be used for designing of the grounding cell has reached the following conclusion as the results of an experimental study on the characteristics of such galvanic anodes for corrosion protection of pipings: 1) Zn alloy anode was the best when the specific resistance of the environment was bellow 1000 $\Omega$.cm, and when above 1000 $\Omega$.cm, Mg alloy anode to be used for designing of the grounding cell was the best. 2) Al alloy anode was better than Mg alloy anode for grounding cell when the specific resistance was bellow 500 $\Omega$.cm, but the Al alloy anode in all the environments reduced the characteristics of galvanic anode to the lower grade than those of Zn alloy anode. 3) Each impressed voltage (E) of the anodes at which drainage current density ($\rho$) begins rapidly increasing is quantitatively presented as follows: \circled1 E sub(Zn)=log (4.9465/$\rho$super(0.0639))+11$\times$10 super(-6)$\rho$super(0.8923i) \circled2 E sub(Al)=log (4.9306/$\rho$super(0.0525))+13$\times$10 super(-6)$\rho$super(0.9314i) \circled3 E sub(Mg)= log (3.7086/$\rho$super(0.0988))+181$\times$10 super(-6)$\rho$super(0.5406i) 4) The empirical equations between the drainage current density (i) and impressed environment are modeled as the following type. logi=g+root(n.E+r)(g,n,r; constants)

Since Mg alloy has many attractive advantages among the practically used metals, many researchers have been studied to develop useful process and material. However, study for sheet forming has not been a few because of low formability on room temperature. Formability and springback for AZ31 alloy sheet have been studied to develop the cold forming technology. The experimental and FE analysis were performed to analyzed the springback amounts by using a model of our on. A different three materials were used to investigate the effects of material characteristics. The springback amounts of Mg-alloy sheet formed part were larger than that of the other material.
This study has been carried out to examine into wettability of Cu-5%Sn alloy in $Al_2O_3$, MgO, $SiO_2$ and graphite, respectively and investigated into the change in macrostructure of Cu-5%Sn alloy according to kind and mixing rate of mold-coating. The results obtained from the experiment are summerized as follows; 1. Cu Cu-5%Sn alloy, wettabilities of $Al_2O_3$ and MgO were good, on the other hand, wettabilities of $SiO_2$ and graphite were bad. 2. The fine equiaxed zone was created because of the role of $Al_2O_3$ and MgO as preferential nucleation sites. 3. Notwithstanding change of mixing rate of $SiO_2$ in mold coating the equixed zone was not created. 4. The area of equiaxed zone was varied according to mixing rate in the case of using $Al_2O_3$ and MgO in mold-coating.
The material used is a commercial magnesium based alloy AZ31(Mg-3Al-1Zn) sheet with a thickness of 0.8 mm. Friction tests at various temperatures(R.T. to $200^{\circ}C$) and at various holding forces in the 4 type molds were carried out to investigate the coefficient of friction. A warm drawing process with a local heating and cooling technique was developed in the Mg alloy sheet forming to improve formability because it is very difficult for Mg alloy to deform at room temperature by the conventional method. So, the coefficient of friction at various mold surface treatment conditions in this study was needed to develop the Mg alloy sheet forming technology.
Alumium alloys hot forging process are gaining increased acceptance in the automotive and electronic industries and hot forging is one of the most efficient manufacturing method for mass product parts. It has been investigated the microstructures and mechanical properties of Al-11.7Si-0.5Mg (KNT40-T6)alloy fabricated by hot forging process for development of connecting rod in this study. The microstructure of hot forged specimen was composed of eutectic structure of alumimum solid solution and $Mg_2Si$ precipitates. The tensile strength of solutionized Al-11.7Si-0.5Mg alloy was 217MPa. This alloy showed a good corrosion resistance using electrochemical polarization test.
