Mechanical and property corrosion resistance of Mg-Zn-Y alloys with an atomic ratio of Zn/Y of 6.8 are investigated using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, uniaxial tensile test and corrosion test with immersion and dynamic potentiometric tests. The alloys showed an in-situ composite microstructure consisting of ${\alpha}$-Mg and icosahedral phase (I-phase) as a strengthening phase. As the volume fraction of the I-phase increases, the yield and tensile strengths of the alloys increase while maintaining large elongation (26~30%), indicating that I-phase is effective for strengthening and forms a stable interface with surrounding ${\alpha}$-Mg matrix. The presence of I-phase having higher corrosion potential than ${\alpha}$-Mg, decreased the corrosion rate of the cast alloy up to I-phase volume fraction of 3.7%. However further increase in the volume fraction of the I-phase deteriorates the corrosion resistance due to enhanced internal galvanic corrosion cell between ${\alpha}$-Mg and I-phase.
The present study aims to investigate the influence of Zn addition on hardness and microstructural characteristics of discontinuous precipitates (DPs) formed by isothermal aging in Mg-9%Al and Mg-9%Al-1%Zn alloys. To obtain large DPs volume fractions in the microstructure, the alloy specimens were solution-treated at 688 K for 24 h followed by water quenching, and then aged at 413 K for 48 h. The aged Mg-9%Al-1%Zn alloy had higher DPs content than the Mg-9%Al alloy, indicating that the Zn addition plays a beneficial role in enhancing age-hardening response. The DPs in the Zn-containing alloy possessed the higher hardness than those of the Zn-free alloy. Microstructural examination revealed that the increased hardness of the DPs resulting from the Zn addition is closely associated with the lower α-(Mg)/β(Mg17Al12) interlamellar spacing and the higher volume fraction of β phase layer of the DPs.
The relatively low conductivity of conventional Mg-Al alloys often limits their areas of application. Therefore, several attempts to develop new high-conductivity magnesium alloys have been made recently. In this research, A Ce-rich rare-earth (RE)material and zinc were added to magnesium which contained no aluminum. As the RE and Zn content were increased, both the hardness and tensile strength were gradually increased, despite the fact that the electrical conductivity decreased slightly. The effects of an aging treatment on the conductivity and mechanical properties of Mg-RE-Zn alloys were also investigated. The electrical conductivity did not change according to the heat treatment conditions; however, the mechanical properties could be enhanced by proper aging heat treatments.
In the present study, the possibility of Mg-Zn-Y alloys as high temperature casting alloys has been investigated. The fluidity of alloys containing yttrium were better than that of commercial AZ91 alloy because the oxide layer on the surface reduced the reaction between melt, and air and mold, which would reduce the resistance during the process of filling the mold. However, this oxide film reduced the hot-tearing resistance. In the case of ZAW942, this alloy exhibited fluidity and hot-tearing resistance better than AZ91 alloy. Because of thermally stable quasicrystal and other phases obstructed the movement of grains, the creep resistance of alloys containing rare earth elements more than 2 wt% was better than that of AZ91 alloy.

The effects of scandium content and extrusion parameters on Al-Zn-Mg-(Sc) alloys were examined. Three kinds of Al-Zn-Mg-(Sc) alloys with up to 0.30 wt.% Sc were prepared. The compression test was conducted to investigate the microstructure evolution during hot deformation. Despite of microstructural differences in the alloys, deformation behaviors were very similar. After extrusion at $350^{\circ}C$ with the ram speed of 15mm/sec, AA7075 showed a moderate surface quality compared with other Sc containing alloys, which was attributed to low flow stresses. AA7075 showed coarse-grained bands in surface region. With the ram speed of 1.5mm/sec at $350^{\circ}C$, the surface quality of the alloys was sound due to low friction stresses and deformation heating. As the Sc content increased, tensile strengths and elongations at room temperature improved.

Magnesium alloys are alloyed with rare earth elements (Re, Ca, Sr) due to the limited use of magnesium in high-temperature conditions. In this study, the influences of Zr and Zn on the aging behavior of a Mg-Nd-Y alloy were investigated. magnesium alloys containing R.E elements require aging treatments Specifically, Nd, Y and Zr are commonly used for high-temperature magnesium alloys. Various aging treatments were conducted at temperatures of 200, 250 and $300^{\circ}C$ for 0.5, 1, 3, 6, and 10 hours in order to examine the microstructural changes and mechanical properties at a high temperature ($150^{\circ}C$). Hardness and high-temperature ($150^{\circ}C$) tensile tests were carried out under various aging conditions in order to investigate the effects of an aging treatment on the mechanical properties of a Mg-3.05Nd-2.06Y-1.13Zr-0.34Zn alloy. The maximum hardness was 67Hv; this was achieved after aging at $250^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours. The maximum tensile, yield strength and elongation at $150^{\circ}C$ were 237MPa, 145MPa and 13.6%, respectively, at $250^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours. The strengths of the Mg-3.05Nd-2.06Y-1.13Zr-0.34Zn alloy increased as the aging time increased to 3 hours at $250^{\circ}C$ This is attributed to the precipitation of a Nd-rich phase, a Zr-rich phase and $Mg_3Y_2Zn_3$.

In this study, Mg-Zn alloys are investigated in terms of their thermal properties after an addition of Cu. Al element is added to improve the mechanical properties and castability in general case. However, it was excluded here because it significantly decreases the thermal conductivity. On the other hand, Zn was added as a major element, which had less influence on reducing the conductivity and can complement the mechanical properties as well. Cu was also added, and it improved the heat transfer characteristics as the amount was increased. The composition ranges of Zn and Cu are 6 wt.% and 0~1.5 wt.%, respectively. Mg-6Zn-xCu alloy was prepared by a gravity casting method using a steel mold and then the thermal conductivity and the microstructure of the as-cast material were investigated. By measuring the density_(${\rho}$), specific heat_(Cp) and thermal diffusivity_(${\alpha}$), the thermal conductivity_(${\lambda}$) was calculated by the equation ${\lambda}={\rho}{\cdot}Cp{\cdot}{\alpha}$. As the amount of Cu increased in the Mg-6Zn-xCu alloy, the heat transfer characteristics were improved, resulting in a synergistic effect which is slow when the added Cu exceeds 1 wt.%. In order to investigate the relative thermal conductivity/emission of the Mg-6Zn-xCu alloy, AZ91 and AZ31 were experimentally evaluated and compared using a separate test equipment. As a result, the Mg-6Zn-1.5Cu alloy when compared to AZ91 showed improvements in the thermal conductivity ranging from 30 to 60% with a nearly 20% improvement in the thermal emission.
The overall objective of this study is to investigate the effect of Ag addition on the mechanical properties and microstructure of rapid solidified 7000 Al series alloys. Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys with small amounts of Ag was fabricated into the powder by gas atomization. The powder was extruded after the cold compaction and degassing and then followed by T6 heat treatment. Microstructure observation, phase analysis, room and high temperature tensile test and hardness test were pursued. The tensile strength and hardness of Ag-added alloy after heat treatment was increased with increasing Ag contents. However, the elongation of extruded alloys was not increased as much as to be expected. The reason of this result seems to be related to $the{\Omega}$ phase, which contribute to the high temperature strength stability of Al-Cu-Zn alloys through the formation of eutectoid with Ag addition.

The effects of aging treatment sequence, specifically pre-aging and post-aging, on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu aluminum alloys has been studied in comparison to symmetrically rolled specimens. In symmetrically rolled specimens, a straight-band precipitation distribution was observed, whereas asymmetrically rolled specimens exhibited a curved-band microstructure of fine precipitates. Notably, the asymmetrically rolled specimens displayed higher strengths. In the case of post-aging, the aging process occurred after rolling, and the dislocations generated during rolling acted as nucleation sites for precipitates during aging. This resulted in the formation of fine precipitates, contributing to improved mechanical properties compared to symmetric rolling. To enhance strength of the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu aluminum alloys, asymmetric rolling proves to be more effective than symmetric rolling, with post-aging showing greater efficacy than pre-aging.
