Effect of CNT Addition on the Hydriding and Dehydriding Rates of Mg-Ni-Fe2O3 Alloy

  • Samples with compositions of 80 wt% Mg-14 wt% Ni-6 wt% $Fe_2O_3$ (named $Mg-Ni-Fe_2O_3$), and 78 wt% Mg-14 wt% Ni-6 wt% $Fe_2O_3-2$ wt% CNT (named $Mg-Ni-Fe_2O_3-CNT$ ) were prepared by reactive mechanical grinding. Hydriding and dehydriding properties and effects of CNT addition on the hydriding and dehydriding rates of $Mg-Ni-Fe_2O_3$ were then investigated. Activation of the $Mg-14Ni-6Fe_2O_3$ sample was completed after three hydriding (under 12 bar $H_2$)-dehydriding (under 1.0 bar $H_2$) cycles at 573 K. The addition of CNT to the $Mg-14Ni-6Fe_2O_3$ sample made the activation process unnecessary, with a small decrease in the hydrogen-storage capacity.

  • Ni/MH 박막전지의 전극으로 사용될 수 $Mg_{2}Ni$박막을 스퍼터링방법으로 제조하였다. $Mg_{2}Ni$합금박막은 Mg, Ni타?을 이용하여 동시에 스퍼터링함으로서 제조하였다. KOH 액체전해질 및 $Ni(OH)_2$전극을 이용하여 전기화학실험을 하였다. $Mg_2Ni$ 박막의 초기 싸이클 특성에 미치는 열처리 효과를 조사하기 위하여, $200-550^{\circ}C$로 변화시키면서 진공중에서 열처리를 하였다. 열처리온도가 $300^{\circ}C$ 이하에서는 초기방전용량이 증가하였으며, $400^{\circ}C$ 열처리시에는 활성화시의 방전용량이 약 160mAh/g으로 가장 크게 나타났다.

  • Ni alloy tape is electropolished to be used as a metal substrate for fabrication of IBAD (ion-Beam Assisted Deposition)-MgO texture template fur HTS coated conductor. Electropolishing is needed to obtain a very smooth surface of Ni alloy tape because the in-plane texture of templates is sensitive to the roughness of metal substrate. The critical current of YBCO coated conductor depends on the texture of YBCO that depends on the texture of the IBAD MgO layer. And so the smoothness of the metal substrate is directly related to the superconducting properties of the coated conductor. In this study, we have prepared a reel-to-reel electropolishing apparatus to polish the Ni alloy tapes for IBAD. Various electropolishing conditions were investigated to improve the surface roughness. Hastelloy tape is continuously electropolished with high polishing current density (0.5 ∼ 2 A/$\textrm{cm}^2$) and fast processing time (1 ∼ 3 min). Polished hastelloy tapes have surface roughness(RMS) of below 1 nm on a 5 ${\times}$ 5 $\mu\m^2$ from AFM and SEM.

Reaction Kinetics with Hydrogen and Temperature Dependence of the Hydriding Rate for a Magnesium-Based Nickel Iron Oxide Alloy

  • A 71.5 wt%Mg-23.5 wt%Ni-5 wt%$Fe_2O_3$ (Mg-23.5Ni-$5Fe_2O_3$) sample was prepared by a quite simple process, reactive mechanical grinding, and its hydriding and dehydriding properties were then investigated. The reactive mechanical grinding of Mg with Ni and $Fe_2O_3$ is considered to facilitate nucleation and shorten the diffusion distances of the hydrogen atoms. After the hydriding-dehydriding cycling, the Mg-23.5Ni-$5Fe_2O_3$ sample contained $Mg_2Ni$ phase. Expansion and contraction of the hydride-forming materials (Mg and $Mg_2Ni$) with the hydriding and dehydriding reactions are also considered to increase the hydriding and dehydriding rates of the mixture by forming defects and cracks leading to the fragmentation of the particles. The temperature dependence of the hydriding rate of the sample is discussed.

  • The transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding was used to fabricate autogenous joints in a magnesium alloy AZ31 with the aid of a pure Ni interlayer. A $13{\mu}m$ thick pure Ni foil was used in order to form a Mg-Ni eutectic liquid at the joint interface. The interface of reaction and composition profiles were investigated as a function of bonding time using a pressure of 0.16 MPa and a bonding temperature of $515^{\circ}C$. The quality of the joints produced was examined by metallurgical characterization and the joint microstructure developed across the diffusion bonds was related to changes in mechanical properties as a function of the bonding time.

  • Samples of pure Mg, 76.5 wt%Mg-23.5 wt%Ni, and 71.5 wt%Mg-23.5 wt%Ni-5 wt%$Fe_2O_3$ were prepared by reactive mechanical grinding and their hydriding and dehydriding properties were then investigated.   • The main emphasis of this study was to find an new hydrogen absorbing alloy such as Mg-Ti-Ni-H systems, and to investigate their hydrogenation properties. ($Mg_9Ti_x$)-10, 20wt%Ni-Hx systems were prepared by hydrogen induced mechanical alloying(HIMA) using Mg and Ni chips and sponge Ti. The particles synthesized were characterized by X-ray diffraction, and their morphologies were observed by means of scanning electron microscopy(SEM) with energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS). In addition, the crystal structures were analyzed in terms of their bright-/ dark field images and the selected area diffraction pattern(SADP) of transmission electron microscopy(TEM).

마그네슘합금과 철강 이종소재의 레이저 브레이징 특성에 미치는 도금층의 영향 (Effects of the Types of Coating on the Laser Brazing Characteristics of Dissimilar Joints between Mg Alloy and Steel Sheet)

  • The dissimilar welding between magnesium alloy and steel sheet was required in automobile industry to increase the strength of the dissimilar joints. Laser brazing is one of the good joining processes for Mgsteel dissimilar joint. In this study, the effect of coating materials was evaluated on the laser brazing for the dissimilar joint between AZ31 and coated steels such as Zn, Sn and Ni. Diode direct laser was used to braze the lap-edge joint with Mg600 filler wire and Superior #21 flux. The wettability was best on Zn coated steel. The interlayer was formed at the interface between brazement and steel for all coating materials. The strengths of brazed specimen were 146.5N/mm, 204.6N/mm and 101.6N/mm for Zn, Sn and Ni coated steel respectively.

  • In the present study, Ni and $TaF_5$ were chosen as additives to enhance the hydriding and dehydriding rates of Mg. A sample with a composition of 80 wt% Mg + 14 wt% Ni + 6 wt% $TaF_5$ (named $80Mg+14Ni+6TaF_5$) was prepared by high-energy ball milling in hydrogen. Its hydriding and dehydriding properties were then examined. At the fourth cycle, the activated sample absorbed 3.88 wt% H for 2.5 min, 4.74 wt% H for 5 min, and 5.75 wt% H for 60 min at 593 K under 12 bar $H_2$. $80Mg+14Ni+6TaF_5$ had an effective hydrogen-storage capacity (the quantity of hydrogen absorbed for 60 min) of about 5.8 wt%. The sample desorbed 1.42 wt% H for 5 min, 3.42 wt% H for 15 min, and 5.09 wt% H for 60 min at 593 K under 1.0 bar $H_2$. Line scanning results by EDS for $80Mg+14Ni+6TaF_5$ before and after cycling showed that the peaks of Ta and F appeared at different positions, indicating that the $TaF_5$ in $80Mg+14Ni+6TaF_5$ was decomposed.

마그네슘용탕의 니켈 함량에 미치는 알루미늄, 망간 및 지르코늄의 영향 (Effect of Aluminum, Manganese, and Zirconium on the Content of Nickel in Molten Magnesium)

  • Variations of nickel contents and microstructures in molten magnesium alloys on the addition of aluminum, zirconium, and manganese have been investigated. Specimens were prepared by melting under $SF_6$ and $CO_2$ atmosphere and casting into a disc of 29 mm diameter with 7~10 mm thickness from the melt acquired at the top of crucible. Before casting, the molten metal was stirred for 3 minutes after each addition of alloying elements and maintained for 30 minutes for settling down. Results showed that zirconium did not significantly affect the content of nickel while aluminum remarkably reduced it by forming $Al_3Ni_2$ phase. When manganese are added to Mg-1wt%Ni alloy along with aluminum, both elements remarkably reduced the content of nickel. The addition of 1.5 wt% manganese to Mg-1wt%Ni alloy containing aluminum further reduced the content of nickel by more than 30%, during which an additional intermetallic phase $Al_{10}Mn_3Ni$ was precipitated in the molten magnesium.
