The effects of calcium and silicon on microstructure and aging characteristics of AZ91 magnesium alloy during T5 treatment was investigated. The addition of 0.88% calcium or 0.25% silicon to AZ91 alloy made dendrite cell smaller. Especially, silicon is more effectively acted as refinement of the dendrite cell than calcium. It is due to that $Mg_2Si$ precipitated at the dendrite cell boundary or in the matrix during T5 treatment of Si added AZ91 alloy retarded the growth of the secondary phase. In the mean while, without inducing the precipitates containing calcium, calcium was segregated mainly around secondary phase such as $Mg_{17}Al_{12}$ and partially dissolved in ternary eutectic (Mg-Al-Ca) structure. In the AZ91 alloy containing both silicon and calcium, more finely distributed $Mg_2Si$ in matrix homogeneously and much finer microstructure were obtained than those containing silicon or calcium. Hence, An AZ91 containing both silicon and calcium was more effective to retarding the growth of the secondary phase than the other AZ91 alloy such as AZ91 alloy containing silicon or AZ91 alloy containing calcium.
It is the purpose of the present to report result of a preliminary electrochemical characterization of the as-cast Mg-Ca alloys. Electrochemical data will be correlated with chemical composition of impurities, and the microstructural change before and after Ca is added. This paper shows that small addition of Ca imparts beneficial effect in electrochemical properties of Mg alloy, primarily, through microstructural modifications.

Oxidation behavior of CaO added Mg and Mg-5Al alloys was investigated. At $500^{\circ}C$, oxidation rate of pure Mg was abruptly increased, while that of CaO added Mg was remarkably reduced with increasing CaO content. As a result of surface analysis by AES, there was the thin oxide layer mixed with MgO and CaO in CaO added Mg. Oxidation behavior of CaO added Mg was similar to that of Ca added Mg. Oxidation rate of 0.6CaO added Mg-5Al alloy was much lower than that of Mg-5Al alloy at $500^{\circ}C$ and both alloys showed the linear weight change at $400^{\circ}C$.
The study is intended to investigate the effect of solution treatment on microstructure and corrosion behavior of AZ91(Mg-9%Al-1%Zn-0.3%Mn)-2%Ca casting alloy. In as-cast state, the AZ91-2%Ca alloy consisted of intermetallic ${\beta}(Mg_{17}Al_{12})$, $Al_8Mn_5$ and $Al_2Ca$ phases in ${\alpha}-(Mg)$ matrix. After the solution treatment, Al within the ${\alpha}-(Mg)$ matrix was distributed more homogeneously, along with the slight decrease in the total amount of intermetallic compounds. The corrosion resistance of the AZ91-2%Ca alloy was improved after the solution treatment. The microstructural examinations for the solution-treated samples revealed that the better corrosion resistance may well be related to the incorporation of more oxides and hydroxides such as $Al_2O_3$, $Al(OH)_3$, CaO and $Ca(OH)_2$ into the surface corrosion product without dissolution of the intermetallic phases along the grain boundaries.

The effect of adding Ca on the microstructural and mechanical properties of as-cast Mg-11Li-3Zn-1Sn(wt%) alloys were investigated. Mg-11Li-3Zn-1Sn-0.4Mn with different Ca additions (0.4, 0.8, 1.2 wt%) were cast under an $SF_6$ and $Co_2$ atmosphere at $720^{\circ}C$. The cast billets were homogenized at $400^{\circ}C$ for 12h and extruded at $200^{\circ}C$. The microstructural and mechanical properties were analyzed by OM, XRD, SEM, and tensile tests. The addition of Ca to the Mg-11Li-3Zn-1Sn-0.4Mn alloy resulted in the formation of $Ca_2Mg_6Zn_3$, MgSnCa intermetallic compound. By increasing Ca addition, the volume fraction and size of $Ca_2Mg_6Zn_3$ with needle shape were increased. This $Ca_2Mg_6Zn_3$ intermetallic compound was elongated to the extrusion direction and refined to fine particles due to severe deformation during hot extrusion. The elongation of the 0.8 wt% Ca containing alloy improved remarkably without reduction strength due to the formation of fine grain and $Ca_2Mg_6Zn_3$ intermetallic compounds by Ca addition. It is probable that fine and homogeneous $Ca_2Mg_6Zn_3$ intermetallic compounds played a significant role in the increase of mechanical properties.
Representative magnesium alloys applied to the die-casting are AZ91, AM60, etc., and the application of these alloys is restricted to components operating at moderate temperatures, due to grain boundary siding of ${\beta}$-phase($Mg_{17}Al_{12}$) at temperatures above $120^{\circ}C$. Heat-resistant magnesium alloys such as AE42, AE44 have been developed, but that have been too burdensome to produce because of the expensive rare earth materials. Research work for the development of low-priced heat-resistant magnesium alloy is actively in progress and positive results are being reported. This study aims to investigate the effect of Ca additions on mechanical properties of Mg-4Al-2Sn heat resistant magnesium alloys. Mg-4Al-2Sn alloys with Ca (0wt.%, 0.3wt.%, 0.7wt.%, 1wt.%) have been produced through the die-casting process for the development of low-priced heat-resistant magnesium alloy, and high temperature tensile tests are performed using the specimens. The results showed that mechanical properties of Mg-4Al-2Sn-xCa increased with the addition of Ca up to 0.7wt.% Ca and further addition of Ca deteriorated the mechanical properties of the alloys. A significant amount of porosity was observed at the sample with 1wt%. Ca and the longer freezing range of the alloy was believed to cause the formation of porosity.
In this study, the age-hardening behavior and tensile properties of a cast AZ91-0.3Ca-0.2Y (SEN9) alloy are investigated and compared with those of a commercial AZ91 alloy. Even after homogenization heat treatment, the SEN9 alloy contains numerous undissolved secondary phases, Al8Mn4Y, Al2Y, and Al2Ca, which results in a higher hardness value than the homogenized AZ91 alloy. Under aging condition at 200 ℃, both the AZ91 and SEN9 alloys exhibit the same peak-aging time of 8 h, but the peak hardness of the latter (86.8 Hv) is higher than that of the former (83.9 Hv). The precipitation behavior of Mg17Al12 phase during aging significantly differs in the two alloys. In the AZ91 alloy, the area fraction of Mg17Al12 discontinuous precipitates (DPs) increases up to ~50% as the aging time increases. In contrast, in the SEN9 alloy, the formation and growth of DPs during aging are substantially suppressed by the Ca- or Y-containing particles, which leads to the formation of only a small amount of DPs with an area fraction of ~4% after peak aging. Moreover, the size and interparticle spacing of Mg17Al12 precipitates of the peak-aged SEN9 alloy are smaller than those of the peak-aged AZ91 alloy. The homogenized AZ91 alloy exhibits a higher tensile strength than the homogenized SEN9 alloy due to the finer grains of the former. However, the peak-aged SEN9 alloy has a higher tensile elongation than the peak-aged AZ91 alloy due to the smaller amount of brittle DPs in the former.

This study investigated the microstructure, tensile strength, and high cycle fatigue properties of ADC12 aluminum alloys with different $Mg+Al_2Ca$ contents manufactured using die casting process. Microstructural observation identified the presence of ${\alpha}-Al$, eutectic Si, $Al_2Cu$, and Fe-intermetallic phases. The increase of $Mg+Al_2Ca$ content resulted in finer pore size and decreased pore distribution. Room temperature tensile strength tests were conducted at strain rate of $1{\times}10^{-3}/sec$. For 0.6%Mg ADC12, measured UTS, YS, and El were 305.2MPa, 157.0MPa, and 2.7%, respectively. For 0.8%Mg ADC12, measured UTS, YS, and El were 311.2 MPa, 159.4 MPa, and 2.4%, respectively. Therefore, 0.8% ADC12 alloy had higher strength and slightly decreased elongation compared to 0.6% Mg ADC12. High cycle fatigue tests revealed that 0.6% Mg ADC12 alloy had a fatigue limit of 150 MPa while 0.8% Mg ADC12 had a fatigue limit of 160MPa. It was confirmed that $Mg+Al_2Ca$ added ADC12 alloy achieved finer, spherical eutectic Si particles, and $Al_2Cu$ phases with greater mechanical and fatigue properties since size and distribution of pores and shrinkage cavities decreased as $Mg+Al_2Ca$ content increased.
The effect of alloy composition on the glass forming ability (GFA) of the Ca-rich Ca-Mg-Zn alloys has been investigated in $Ca_{65}Mg_{5+x}Zn_{30-x}$ and $Ca_{55+x}Mg_{15}Zn_{30-x}$ (x=0, 5, 10, 15, 20) alloys. In a wide composition range of 15-25% Zn and 10-20% Mg bulk metallic glass (BMG) samples with the diameter larger than 6 mm are fabricated by conventional copper mold casting method in air atmosphere. Among the alloys investigated, the $Ca_{65}Mg_{15}Zn_{20}$ alloy exhibits the highest GFA enabling to form BMG sample with the diameter of at least 15 mm. The crystalline phase formed during solidification of $Ca_{65}Mg_{15}Zn_{20}$ ($D_{max}=15\;mm$) could be identified as a mixture of $Ca_3Zn$ and $CaMg_2$ cause by the redistribution of the constituent elements on long-range scale. The compressive fracture strength and fracture elongation of the $Ca_{65}Mg_{15}Zn_{20}$ BMG are 602 MPa and 2.08% respectively. The ${\sigma}$ parameter which has been recently proposed for evaluating GFA exhibits better correlation with GFA of Ca-Mg-Zn alloys than other parameters suggested so far such as ${\Delta}T_x$, $T_{rg}$, K, ${\gamma}$, and ${\Delta}T^*$ parameters.
In this study, three magnesium alloys were investigated; those are 1.5wt.% CaO added AM80, 1.0wt.% CaO added AM60, and conventional MRI153 alloys. Test specimens of three alloys were prepared by re-melting and casting into steel mold with ingots and machining. The mechanical properties and the creep behavior at 150 degrees Celsius of these specimens were determined and their microstructures were characterized using OM and SEM. For the application to die-casting, fluidity test were carried out with spiral mold. Compared with 1.0wt.% CaO added AM60 alloy, 1.5wt.% CaO added AM80 alloy exhibited good creep properties in all test conditions. Moreover, CaO added alloys showed better creep properties than MRI153 alloy at lower load condition. It is proposed that 1.5wt.% CaO added AM80 alloy is useful to apply to power-train parts such as transmission case in vehicles.
