  • This work was intended to investigate the effects of Zn content on microstructure and hardness of discontinuous precipitates (DPs) produced by continuous cooling (CC) in Mg-8%Al-X%Zn alloys with 0%, 0.5% and 1% of Zn contents (wt%). The DPs in the alloys possessed a wide range of (α+β) interlamellar spacings, which is attributed to the different transformation temperatures during CC. The higher Zn content resulted in the lower level of interlamellar spacings of the DPs, along with thinner and larger volume fraction of β phase layer in the DPs. It is noted that the DPs in the alloy with higher Zn content exhibited higher hardness, and that the ratio of increase in hardness of the DPs to that of the as-cast state was also increased with increasing Zn content. The reason was discussed on the basis of microstructural differences of the DPs in the Mg-8%Al-X%Zn alloys.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of solution treatment on the corrosion behavior of Mg-8%Al-(0-1)%Zn casting alloys in 1M NaCl aqueous solution. After the solution treatment, all alloys showed single ${\alpha}$-(Mg) phase microstructure by dissolution of ${\beta}(Mg_{17}Al_{12})$ phase into the ${\alpha}$-(Mg) matrix. The $H_2$ evolution volume decreased with an increase in Zn content, which indicates that the addition of Zn plays a beneficial role in decreasing corrosion rate of the Mg-Al-Zn alloy in solution-treated state. The microstructural evaluations on the corrosion products and corroded surfaces after the immersion test in 1 M NaCl solution revealed that the incorporation of more $Al_2O_3$ and ZnO into the corrosion product, by which the penetration of $Cl^-$ ions is impeded, are thought to be responsible for the better corrosion resistance in relation with the Zn addition.

  • Aluminium-silicon based casting alloys have received an attention for high electrical and thermal conductivity applications, however relatively low conductivity of Al-Si alloys often limits the application. Efforts have been made to develop new high conductivity aluminium casting alloys containing no or less silicon. In this study Al-Zn-Fe based alloys were selected as the new alloys, and the effect of Mg additions on their properties and casting characteristics were investigated. As the magnesium content was increased, the tensile strength of Al-2Zn-0.2Fe based alloy was remarkably increased, while the electrical conductivity was deteriorated. It was observed that the fluidity of the alloys was generally inversely proportional to the Mg content but the hot cracking resistance was rather proportional to it. Cooling curve analyses were carried out to measure the actual solidification range and dendrite coherency temperature.

  • Mg-(9-x)Sn-xAl-1Zn (x=1, 2, 3 and 4 wt.%) alloys were subjected to indirect extrusion, and the microstructure and mechanical properties of the as-extruded Mg-Sn-Al-Zn (TAZ) alloys were investigated. The TAZ 811 alloy exhibited a finer grain structure than the TAZ 541 alloy due to a larger number of Mg2Sn particles, which pinned the grain boundaries and prevented growth of recrystallized grains. The TAZ alloys showed an unusual yield asymmetry behavior. The tension-compression yield asymmetry increased with decreasing average grain size. The TAZ 811 alloy with a small grain size exhibited a larger yield asymmetry than that of the TAZ 541 alloy having a relatively large grain size, which is mainly attributed to the low Al content and large number of second phase particles in the TAZ 811 alloy.

  • The present study aims to investigate the influence of Zn addition on hardness and microstructural characteristics of discontinuous precipitates (DPs) formed by isothermal aging in Mg-9%Al and Mg-9%Al-1%Zn alloys. To obtain large DPs volume fractions in the microstructure, the alloy specimens were solution-treated at 688 K for 24 h followed by water quenching, and then aged at 413 K for 48 h. The aged Mg-9%Al-1%Zn alloy had higher DPs content than the Mg-9%Al alloy, indicating that the Zn addition plays a beneficial role in enhancing age-hardening response. The DPs in the Zn-containing alloy possessed the higher hardness than those of the Zn-free alloy. Microstructural examination revealed that the increased hardness of the DPs resulting from the Zn addition is closely associated with the lower α-(Mg)/β(Mg17Al12) interlamellar spacing and the higher volume fraction of β phase layer of the DPs.

  • The primary aim of this paper is to evaluate the probabilistic fatigue crack propagation models using the residual of a random variable and to present the probabilistic model fit for the probabilistic fatigue crack growth behavior in Mg-Al-Zn alloys under maximum load conditions. The models used in this study were prepared by applying a random variable to empirical fatigue crack propagation models such as the Paris-Erdogan model, Walker model, Forman model, and modified Forman model. It was verified that the good models for describing the stochastic variation of the fatigue crack propagation behavior in Mg-Al-Zn alloys under maximum load conditions were the 'probabilistic Paris-Erdogan model' and 'probabilistic Walker model'. The influence of the maximum load conditions on the stochastic variation of fatigue crack growth is also considered.

  • The primary aim of this paper was to evaluate several probabilistic fatigue crack propagation models using the residual of a random variable, and to present the model fit for probabilistic fatigue behavior in Mg-Al-Zn alloys. The proposed probabilistic models are the probabilistic Paris-Erdogan model, probabilistic Walker model, probabilistic Forman model, and probabilistic modified Forman models. These models were prepared by applying a random variable to the empirical fatigue crack propagation models with these names. The best models for describing fatigue crack propagation behavior in Mg-Al-Zn alloys were generally the probabilistic Paris-Erdogan and probabilistic Walker models. The probabilistic Forman model was a good model only for a specimen with a thickness of 9.45 mm.

  • Effects of alloying elements such as Si, Mn, Zn on the fluidity and mechanical properties of high ductility Al-Mg based alloys were investigated. The fluidity of alloys was evaluated using a vacuum suction fluidity test, and Si addition was observed to increase the fluidity of AI-Mg binary alloys substantially while Zn somewhat decreased the fluidity. However, both the strength and ductility were significantly deteriorated by the Si additions. It was observed that a small amount of Mn addition to Al-Mg alloy increased the tensile strength effectively without losing much ductility but the effect of Zn addition on the strength was relatively small.

  • The effects of scandium content and extrusion parameters on Al-Zn-Mg-(Sc) alloys were examined. Three kinds of Al-Zn-Mg-(Sc) alloys with up to 0.30 wt.% Sc were prepared. The compression test was conducted to investigate the microstructure evolution during hot deformation. Despite of microstructural differences in the alloys, deformation behaviors were very similar. After extrusion at $350^{\circ}C$ with the ram speed of 15mm/sec, AA7075 showed a moderate surface quality compared with other Sc containing alloys, which was attributed to low flow stresses. AA7075 showed coarse-grained bands in surface region. With the ram speed of 1.5mm/sec at $350^{\circ}C$, the surface quality of the alloys was sound due to low friction stresses and deformation heating. As the Sc content increased, tensile strengths and elongations at room temperature improved.

  • Al-Mg alloy, an open rack vaporizer(ORV) material was reported to be corroded in seawater environments though the ORV material was coupled to thermally sprayed Al-Zn alloy functioning a sacrificial anode. In addition, the corrosion behavior based on the calculated corrosion potential did not match the observed corrosion behavior. Hence, the goal of this study is to get better understanding on Al or Al-Mg alloy coupled to Al-Zn alloy and to provide the calculated corrosion potential representing the corrosion behavior of the ORV material by immersion test, electrochemical tests, and calculation of corrosion and galvanic potential. The corrosion potentials of Al and Al alloys also depended on alloying element as well as surface defects. The corrosion potentials of Al and Al-Mg alloy were changed with time. In the meantime, the corrosion potentials of Al-Zn alloys were not. The corrosion rates of Al-Zn alloys were exponentially increased with zinc contents. The phenomena were explained with the stability of passive film proved by passive current density depending on pH and confirmed by the model proposed by McCafferty. Dissimilar material crevice corrosion (DMCC) test shows that higher content of zinc caused Al-Mg alloy corroded more rapidly, which was due to the fact that higher corrosion rate of Al-Zn makes [$H^+$] and [$Cl^-$] more concentrated within pit solution to corrode Al-Mg alloy. Considering electrochemical reactions within pit as well as bulk in the calculation gives better prediction on the corrosion behavior of Al and Al-Mg alloy as well as the capability of Al-Zn alloy for corrosion protection.
