$HA(hydroxyapatite)/{\beta}-TCP$ (tricalcium phosphate) biomaterial (BCP; biphasic calcium phosphate) is widely used as bone cement or scaffolds material due to its superior biocompatibility. Furthermore, $NH_4HCO_3$ as a space holder (SH) has been used to evaluate feasibility assessment of porous structured BCP as bone scaffolds. In this study, using a spark plasma sintering (SPS) process at 393K and 1373K under 20MPa load, porous $HA/{\beta}-TCP$ biomaterials were successfully fabricated using $HA/{\beta}-TCP$ powders with 10~30 wt% SH, TiH2 as a foaming agent, and MgO powder as a binder. The effect of SH content on the pore size and distribution of the BCP biomaterial was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and a microfocus X-ray computer tomography system (SMX-225CT). The microstructure observations revealed that the volume fraction of the pores increased with increasing SH content and that rough pores were successfully fabricated by adding SH. Accordingly, the cell viabilities of BCP biomaterials were improved with increasing SH content. And, good biological properties were shown after assessment using Hanks balanced salt solution (HBSS).
Porous ${\beta}-tricalcium$ phosphate $({\beta}-TCP)$ bioceramic was fabricated by pressureless sintering using commercial HAp and different volume percentages of PMMA powders (30-60 vol.%). The range of spherical pore size was about $200-250\;{\mu}m$ in diameter. By increasing the PMMA content, the number of pores and their morphology were dramatically changed as well as decreased the material properties. In case of using 60 vol.% PMMA content, network-type pores were found, due to the necking of the PMMA powders. The values of relative density, elastic modulus, bending strength and hardness of the 60 vol.% PMMA content sample, sintered at $1500^{\circ}C$, were about 46%, 22.2 GPa, 5MPa and 182 Hv respectively. Human osteoblast-like MG-63 cells and osteoclast-like Raw 264.7 cells were well grown and fully covered all of the porous ${\beta}-TCP$ bodies sintered at $1500^{\circ}C$.
The abnormal content of blood lipids often results in metabolic diseases, such as hyperlipidemia and obesity. Many agents, including natural sources from traditional food, have been developed to regulate the blood lipid contents. In this study, we examined the anti-hyperlipidemic activity of Rhynchosia nulubilis seeds pickled with brown rice vinegar (RNSpBRV), a Korean traditional pickled soybean food. Since RNSpBRV is made of R. nulubilis seeds (RNS) soaked in brown rice vinegar (BRV), we compared the anti-adipogenic activity between RNS, BRV and solid fraction of RNSpBRV (SF-RNSpBRV), liquid fraction of RNSpBRV (LF-RNSpBRV). For this, the inhibitory effect of lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocyte was checked by adding methanol extracts of mixed RNS and BRV, LF-RNSpBRV, and SF-RNSpBRV. The addition of each methanol extract up to 1 mg/ml showed no cytotoxicity on 3T3-L1 adipocyte, and approximately 20% of the lipid droplet formation was suppressed with the methanol extract of BRL or SF-RNSpBRV. The highest suppression (42.1%) was achieved with LF-RNSpBRV. In addition, mice fed a high fat diet (HFD) supplemented with 5% RNSpBRV powder led to increased high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and lower blood glucose, triglyceride, and total cholesterol compared to mice fed with a HFD diet only. Interestingly, the size of the epididymis cells gradually decreased in HFD + 1% RNSpBRV and HFD + 5% RNSpBRV-fed mice if compared those of HFD-fed mice. Taken together, these results provide evidence that RNSpBRV has a regulatory role in lipid metabolism that is related to hyperlipidemia.
The crystal structure of biotite-1M from Bancroft, Ontario, was determined by Rietveld refinement method using high-resolution neutron powder diffraction data at -26.3$^{\circ}C$, 2$0^{\circ}C$, 30$0^{\circ}C$, $600^{\circ}C$, 90$0^{\circ}C$. The crystal structure has been refined to a R sub(B) of 5.06%-11.9% and S (Goodness of fitness) of 2.97-3.94. The expansion rate of a, b, c unit cell dimensions with elevated temperature linearly increase to $600^{\circ}C$. The expansivity of the c dimension is $1.61{\times}10^{40}C^{-1}$, while $2.73{\times}10^{50}C^{-1}$ and $5.71{\times}10^{-50}C^{-1}$ for the a and b dimensions, respectively. Thus, the volume increase of the unit cell is dominated by expansion of the c axis as increasing temperature. In contrast to the trend, the expansivity of the dimensions is decreased at 90$0^{\circ}C$. It may be attributed to a change in cation size caused by dehydroxylation-oxidation of $Fe^{2+}$ to $Fe^{3+}$ in vacuum condition at such high temperature. The position of H-proton was determined by the refinement of diffraction pattern at low temperature (-2.63$^{\circ}C$). The position is 0.9103${\AA}$ from the O sub(4) location and located at atomic coordinates (x/a=0.138, y/b=0.5, z/c=0.305) with the OH vector almost normal to plane (001). According to the increase of the temperature, $\alpha$* (tetrahedral rotation angle), $t_{oct}$ (octahedral sheet thickness), mean distance increase except 90$0^{\circ}C$ data. But the trend is less clearly relative to unit cell dimension expansion because the expansion is dominant to the interlayer. Also, ${\Psi}$ (octahedral flattening angle) shows no trends as increasing temperature and it may be because the octahedron (M1, M2) is substituted by Mg and Fe.

To investigate the utilization of calcium lactates (CaL) as coagulants for tofu manufacture, the quality characteristics and shelf-life of tofu made by CaL-P (black snail powder) and CaL-A (black snail ash) were investigated and compared to calcium chloride (CC), magnesium chloride (MC), calcium sulfate (CS ) and standard calcium lactate (CaL-S). And also, total microbe and turbidity of the tofu were determined during storage at 1$0^{\circ}C$. Coagulation ability of CaL-A was the highest, and the ability of CaL-P was higher than that of CaL-S. Yield of CaL-A tofu was similar to those of CS and CC tofu, while the yield of CaL-P tofu was 50% compared to that of CC. L* value of CaL-P tofu was lower, but a* and b* values were higher than those of other tofus. The hardness of tofu showed in the order of CaL-S>CS>CC>CaL-P>MC>CaL-A, while the cohesiveness showed in the order of MC>CaL-S>CC>CS>CaL-P>CaL-A. Calcium contents were 57 mg% in MC tofu, 174 mg% in CS tofu, 116 mg% in CaL-S tofu, 95 mg% in CaL-A tofu and 172 mg% in CaL-P tofu. From the results of microscopic observations, the lower hardness showed the more soft and the smaller particle. The particle of CaL-A tofu was small and uniformity but the size of CaL-P and CC tofu showed coarse. Sensory quality of CaL-P and -A tofu were better than the other tofu evaluated by texture, springiness, flavor and overall taste. The shelf-life estimated by total microbe was 4∼6 days in CC, MC, CS, CaL-S and CaL-A tofu, but 8 days in CaL-P tofu at 1$0^{\circ}C$. From the above results, the CaL-P and -A may believe to use as coagulant for tofu manufacture due to its softened taste and enhanced shelf-life, and higher calcium content which has higher absorbability in human body.
In this study, extracts of chlorella using different extraction methods were compared for antioxidant activities and spray-dried chlorella powders were investigated for their physicochemical characteristics. The DPPH radical scavenging activity and superoxide radical scavenging activity of 50% ethanol extract were 29.19%, and 48.91%, respectively. The oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) of the 50% ethanol extract ($150.44{\mu}M/g$) was higher than those of other extracts. The total chlorophyll content of the 50% ethanol extract (542.89 mg/100 g) was higher than those of other extracts. The microencapsulation of the 50% ethanol extract was manufactured by spray-drying with 10 % maltodextrin (SD-C10), 20% maltodextrin (SD-C20), and 30% maltodextrin (SD-C30). The particle size of the freeze-dried powder ($454.47{\mu}m$) was higher than those of the spray-dried powders ($24.15{\sim}32.49{\mu}m$). Scanning electron microscope images showed that the spray-dried chlorella powders using SD-C10, SD-C20, and SD-C30 had an uniform particle distribution. The water absorption index and water solubility index (WSI) of powders were 0.31~0.45, and 96.96~98.28%, respectively. The spray-dried powders showed the stability in total chlorophyll content for 40 days storage. Based on these results, spray-dried chlorella powders could be used in various types of food processes.
Proliposomal patch of clenbuterol, ${\beta}_2-agonist$ bronchodilator, was prepared and its feasibility as a novel transdermal drug delivery system was examined. Proliposomal granules containing clenbuterol was prepared by a standard method using sorbitol and lecithin with (Rx 2) or without cholesterol (Rx 1). The porous structure of sorbitol in the proliposomes was maintained allowing tree flowability of the granules. Following contact with water, the granules were converted probably to liposomes almost completely within several minutes. It indicates that proliposomes may be hydrated, when they are applied on the skin under occlusive condition in vivo, by the sweat to form liposomes. Clenbuterol release from Rx 1 and Rx 2 proliposomes to pH 7.4 isotonic phospate buffer (PBS) across cellulose membrane (mol. wt. cut-off of 12000-14000) was retarded significantly compared with that from the mixture of clenbuterol powder and blank proliposomes. Interestingly, proliposomes prepared with lecithin and cholesterol (i.e., Rx 2 proliposomes) showed much more retarded release of clenbuterol than proliposomes prepared only with lecithin (i.e.. Rx 1 proliposomes), indicating that clenbuterol release from proliposomes can be controlled by the addition of cholesterol to the proliposomes. Proliposomal patches were prepared using PVC film as an occlusive backing sheet, two sides adhesive tape (urethane, 1.45 mm thickness) as a reservoir for proliposome granules and Millipore MF-membrane (0.45 mm pore size) as a drug release-controlling membrane. Rx 1 or Rx 2 proliposomes containing 4.6 mg of clenbuterol were loaded into the reservoir of the patch. Clenbuterol release from the patches to pH 7.4 PBS was determined using USP paddle (50 rpm)-over-disc release method. Clenbuterol release from the proliposomal patches was much more retarded even than from a matrix type clenbuterol patch (Boehringer Ingelheim ltd). Being consistent with clenbuterol release from the proliposomal granules, the release from the patches was highly dependent on the presence of cholesterol in the proliposomes : Patches containing Rx 2 proliposomes showed several fold slower drug release than patches containing Rx 1 proliposomes. When the patch containing Rx 1 proliposomes was applied on to the back of a hair-removed rat, clenbuterol concentration in the rat blood was maintained during 6-72 hrs. Transdermal absorption of clenbuterol from the patch was accelerated when the patch was prehydrated with 50 ml of pH 7.4 PBS before topical application. Above results indicate that sustained transdermal delivery of clenbuterol is feasible using proliposomal patches if the cholesterol content and pore size of the release rate-controlling membrane of patches, for example, are appropriately controlled.
Defatted rice bran was microparticulated using fluidized bed opposed jet mill and air-classified at different air classifying wheel speed (ACWS) in Turboplex classifier. The median particle size and the standard deviation decreased, and concomitantly the specific surface area increased generally with increasing ACWS. The protein, fat and ash contents of the recovered rice bran increased with ACWS. The contents of minerals; magnesium, zinc, iron and manganese; increased positively with ACWS. The phytic acid content, however, was slightly higher at middle ACWS. The dietary fiber content was highest in the ACWS 15,000 rpm fraction showing 31.47%. Higher ACWS resulted in lighter colored powder. The water holding capacity (WHC) showed the maximum value at ACWS 12,000 rpm and decreased with increasing ACWS, while the oil holding capacity (OHC) increased with ACWS. The rheological property of the microparticulated rice bran/water suspension fitted to the linear model. The yield stress and viscosity of the suspension increased with ACWS. The shape of microparticulated rice bran at ACWS 21,000 rpm was spherical, and the median particle size was $3.7{\mu}m$. When cake was prepared with substitution of microparticulated rice bran at 5%, the cake height and volume increased remarkably.
The objective of this study was to examine the physicochemical characteristics of coagulation reaction between loess and red tide organisms (RTO) and its feasibility, in developing a technology for the removal of RTO bloom in coastal sea. The physicochemical characteristics of loess were examined for a particle size distribution, surface characteristics by scanning electron microscope, zeta potential, and alkalinity and pH variations in sea water. Two kinds of RTO that were used in this study, Cylindrothen closterium and Skeietonema costatum, were sampled in Masan bay and were cultured in laboratory. Coagulation experiments were conducted using various concentrations of loess, RTO, and a jar tester. The supernatant and RTO culture solution were analyzed for pH, alkalinity, RTO cell number. A negative zeta potential of loess increased with increasing pH at $10^(-3)M$ NaCl solution and had -71.3 mV at pH 9.36. Loess had a positive zeta potential of +1,8 mV at pH 1.98, which resulted in a characteristic of material having an amphoteric surface charge. In NaCl and $CaCl_2$, solutions, loess had a decreasing negative zeta potential with increasing $Na^+\;and\;Ca^(+2)$ ion concentration and then didn't result in a charge reversal due to not occurring specific adsorption for $Na^+$ ion while resulted in a charge reversal due to occurring specific adsorption for $Ca^(+2)$ ion. In sea water, loess and RTO showed the similar zeta potential values of -112,1 and -9.2 mV, respectively and sea sand powder showed the highest zeta potential value of -25.7 mV in the clays. EDLs (electrical double-layers) of loess and RTO were extremely compressed due to high concentration of salts included in sea water, As a result, there didn't almost exist EDL repulsive force between loess and RTO approaching each other and then LVDW (London-yan der Waals) attractive force was always larger than EDL repulsive force to easily form a floe. Removal rates of RTO exponentially increased with increasing a loess concentration. The removal rates steeply increased until $800 mg/l$ of loess, and reached $100{\%}$ at 6,400 mg/l of loess. Removal rates of RTO exponentially increased with increasing a G-value. This indicated that mixing (i.e., collision among particles) was very important for a coagulation reaction. Loess showed the highest RTO removal rates in the clays.
We investigated the anti-obesity effects of Lactobacillus acidophilus C isolated from kimchi and red ginseng and black raspberry mixture fermented by this strain. Experimental samples were prepared with 10% skim milk, 1% red ginseng extract and 1% immature black raspberry powder and without red ginseng extract and black raspberry fermented by this strain at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hour. Male C57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into 4 groups (a normal diet group (N), a high-fat diet group (HF), a high fat diet with L. acidophilus C (C), and a high fat diet with fermented mixture (CEx)) and were orally administered daily for 6 weeks at concentration of 2,000 mg/kg body weight. The results showed that weight gain, weight of periepididymal fat and perirenal fat, adipocyte size, lipid accumulation in liver, serum glucose concentration, serum GOT and GPT concentration and serum leptin were decreased and concentration of HDL-cholesterol and serum adiponectin were increased compared to HF group. These results suggest that fermented mixture (CEx) might be helpful in improvement of high-fat diet-induced obesity than only L. acidophilus C intake.
