Action of Ozone on Bacterial Virus f2 (세균성 Virus f2에 대한 Ozone의 불활성작용)

  • Bacterial virus f2 and its RNA were examined to elucidate the mode of ozone utilizing sucrose density gradient analysis and electtron microscopic techniques. the inactivation kinetics of the virus f2 by ozonation showed that the viruses were inactivated during the first 5 sec of the reaction and were further inactivated at a slower rate during the next 10 min at 0.09 and 0.8mg/l ozone concentrations. The virus coat was broken by ozonation into many pieces of protein subunits and the adsorption of the viruses to the host pili was inversely related to the extent of the breakage of the virus. The viral RNA was released from the virus particles during ozone, but ozone inactivation of the RNA enclosed in the protein coat could not ruled out the possibility that the RNA was secondarily sheared by a reaction with the broken coat protein.

Effect of Genistein on Apoptosis of T Iymphocyte and Phagocytosis of Peritoneal Macrophage (Genistein이 T lymphocyte의 Apoptosis 및 복강 Macrophage의 탐식능에 미치는 영향)

  • The effects of genistein on murine thymocytes for inducing apoptotic cell death and phagocytic activity of peritoneal macrophage were studied in vitro. Addition of genistein (10 and 50$\mu$M) to cultured thymocytes from BALB/c mice definitely promoted DNA fragmentation. Also, cytofluorometric analysis of these cells demonstrated a reduction in mitochondrial transmembrane potential ($\Delta$Ψm). But, repeated administration of genistein (1 mg/mouse/day) to mice for 7 days did not cause any detectable DNA fragmentation. Genistein decreased lucigenin chemiluminescence and engulfment of fluorescein-conjugated E. coli particles in peritoneal macrophage. These results suggest that genistein induce an apoptosis of thymocyte via reduction in $\Delta$Ψm and decrease phagocytic activity of peritoneal macrophage in vitro.

High Temperature Deformation Behavior of Rapid-Solidification Processed Al-18Si Alloy (급냉응고된 과공정 Al-Si합금의 고온변형특성에 관한 연구)

  • The high temperature deformation behavior of spray-formed Al-19wt%Si-1.87wt%Mg-0.085wt.%Fe alloy was studied by torsion testing in the strain rate range of 0.001-1 sec-1 and in the temperature range of 300-500 $^{\circ}C$. The relationship between stress temperature and strain rate is expressed using the Power law. the behavior of dynamic recrystallization is showed in 300-35$0^{\circ}C$, 1-0.1sec-1 and the behavior of dynamic recovery is showed in 450-50$0^{\circ}C$, 0.01-0.001sec-1 The size of Si particles is mall when the temperature is low and the strain rate is high. The strain rate sensitivity(m) and the apparent activation energy(Q) indicate the dependence on strain rate and temperature for flow stress respectively. The hot ductility is high when m is high and Q is low. The maps of strain rate sensitivity and apparent activation energy suggest the optimum processing conditions.

  • To investigate the characteristics of fine particles and the relationships between pollutant concentrations and long-range transport patterns in Asia area, continuous every 6-day sampling (case 1) and an intensive field sampling (case 2) had been carried out between March 1998 and July 1999 at Taean, Korea. Anionic ($Cl^{-}$, ${NO_{3}}^{-}$, ${SO_{4}}^{2-}$) and Cationic ($Na^+$, ${NH_{4}}^{ +}, $K^+$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Ca^{2+}$) concentrations of $PM_{2.5}$ particle were analyzed. The major objective of this study is to investigate the relationships between the chemical compounds of $PM_{2.5}$ and the long-range transport patterns during intensive sampling period.

  • 1. In adult ICR-SLC mice, significant increase in the occurrence of the Tyzzer's disease was noted when the reticuloendothelial system was blockaded with the carbon particles. The most suitable bloakading time was 2 hours before inoculating Tyzzer's organisms, the route was intraperitoneal and the dose was 3mg/body. 2. Survival rate of the experimental group ICR-SLC suckling mice receiving BCG ($3{\times}10^8$) 6 days prior to intraperitoneal inoculation of Tyzzer's organisms was 80 percent, but the control group was 17%. 3. In comparing the survival rate of the nude/nude mice with the nude/+ mice, the former congenitally thymus deficient mice are 11 percent, but the latter are 67 percent.

  • In this study, abiotic transformation of 1-naphthol via oxidative-coupling reaction was evaluated using Mn oxide which is ubiquitous in natural soils. The transformation of 1-naphthol catalyzed by synthetic birnessite $({\delta}-MnO_2)$ followed pseudo-lst order reaction, and the rate constants was in the range of $0.053{\sim}0.13\;min^{-1}$ with birnessite loadings of $12.5{\sim}50\;mg/20\;mL$. Since the oxidation of 1-naphthol was occurred on the reactive surface of the oxide particles, the rate constants with various birnessite loadings were correlated with birnessite surface area concentration. The correlation showed a strong linearity, which confirms the supposition of the surface reaction. From the correlation, therefore, the surface area normalized rate constant, $k_{surf}$, was determined to be 0.032 $L/m^2\;min$.

  • It was carried out to evaluate microstructure and mechanical properties of friction stir welded(FSW) on magnesium alloys. Two types magnesium alloy was used in this work, AZ31 wrought and AZ91 cast magnesium alloy. Microstructure near the weld zone showed general weld structures such as stir zone(SZ), thermo-mechanically affected zone(TMAZ) and heat affected zone(HAZ). In the AZ91 alloy, the SZ had a fine grain size and $\beta$ phase particles which were well distributed in matrix. It was characterized to redistribute by partial or full re-solution of the $\beta$ phase which is coarse in base metal during FSW processing. The hardness of the SZ slightly increase than the base metal in AZ31 Mg alloy.

  • We optimized the biological and physical parameters for DNA delivery into thalli of the red alga Porphyra yezoensis using a particle bombardment device. The efficiency of transformation was determined using the ${\beta}-glucuronidase$ (GUS) assay. The optimal helium pressure, distance of tungsten particle flight, and ratio of DNA to tungsten particles were $23kgf/cm^2$, 8 cm, and $5{\mu}g/mg$ tungsten, respectively. During bombardment, osmotic treatment with a mixture of 0.6 M mannitol and sorbitol increased the efficiency of GUS transformation. After 2 days, the blue color indicating GUS activity was observed using a histochemical assay.

  • It is analyzed how the Plasma - MgO surface interaction, driving waveform and their inter-relation can cause misfiring. Developing of glow discharge mode during the ramp reset due to lack of priming particles was suggested as one of the important misfiring sources. It is also shown that simple modification of reset waveform can considerably reduce misfiring probability.

  • A hybrid model has been developed which adopts a fluid model for electrons and a particle-in-cell (PIC) model for ions. Using the hybrid simulation, the discharge characteristics are investigated with the diagnostics for the electric field and the wall charge profile, density distributions of charged and excited particles, distributions of ultraviolet lights on phosphor, and the visible lights emitted from the PDP cell. Also, energy and angle distributions of the ions at the MgO protective layer are obtained for the analysis of material effect. The comparison of hybrid simulation results with experimental results as well as that with the conventional fluid simulation shows that the new model is more adequate for the simulation of PDP cells.
