  • In this study, the nanofiltration (NF) composite membranes for the low pressure use were prepared using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) hollow fiber membrane as a supporter. Poly styrene sulfonic acid (PSSA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) were coated onto the PVDF membrane by both layer-by-layer and salting-out methods. To characterize the prepared NF membranes in terms of the flux and salt rejection, 100 mg/L feed solutions of NaCl, $MgCl_2$, and $CaSO_4$ were used at the flow rate of 1 L/min and the operating pressure of 2 bar at room temperature. The NF membranes coated with 20,000 ppm PSSA (ionic strength 1.0) solution for 3 minutes and then 30,000 ppm (ionic strength 0.1) solution for 1 minute were observed the best performance. The permeability and salt rejection were 38.5 LMH, 57.1% for NaCl, 37.9 LMH and 90.2% for $MgCl_2$ and 32.4 LMH and 54.6% for $CaSO_4$, respectively.

  • This research shows the electrical characteristic using excellent epoxy nano-composite of MgO 5.0 wt% and $SiO_2$ 0.4 wt% in mechanical strength test depending on nano-additive. First of all, volume resistance depending on nano-additive and temperature using high resistance meter (HP. 4329A) by increasing 10, 100, 1,000 V of applying voltage was measured. Moreover, temperature range of $25{\sim}120^{\circ}C$ with virgin sample was tested using TO-9B oven by Ando Company. The result showed that virgin and the samples added with MgO and $SiO_2$ had similar value of volume resistance in low temperature and low electric field region and reduced with slow slope. The nano-composite's volume resistance of sample added with MgO and $SiO_2$ had higher value than virgin sample's volume resistance in high temperature region more than $80^{\circ}C$. Moreover, the slope has steeply reduced. The volume resistance of sample added with MgO 5.0 wt% was $8.38{\times}10^{13}\;{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ and it was 6.8 times more than virgin sample in high temperature at $120^{\circ}C$. The insulation characteristics were constant although filler has changed in low temperature region. But, in high temperature region, the value of volume resistance of sample with MgO 5.0 wt% was 7.6 times more than the virgin sample's volume resistance.

  • In this study we tried to measure the effect of magnetic field on the dielectric properties of $BaTiO_3-MgFe_2O_4$ soft magnetic composite. Composites with different weight percents of ferroelectric and ferromagnetic phases were subjected to magnetic field in the order of 0 to 450 Oe and the variation of the dielectric properties was observed. The Variation of dielectric polarization was discussed in terms of Maxwell-Wagner type polarization in particulate composites.

  • Optimization of the fermentation medium for phenylethyl alcohol (PEA) production by Pichia anomala SKM-T was performed. The carbon source (glucose), nitrogen source (L-phenylalanine), and initial pH value were independent variables of the optimized medium. The central composite rotatable design was used for the experimental design and the analysis of the results. The optimum medium composition for the maximal production (621.27 mg/L) of PEA was found to be an initial pH of 5.03, and concentrations of L-phenylalanine at 6.53 and glucose at 6.11 g/L (w/v). This experimental finding is in close agreement with the model prediction (702.79 mg/L; desirability 0.884) with an 11.6% difference.

  • The initiation and growth of $\alpha$-Al2O3/metal composites by the directed oxidation of molten commercial AlZnMg-alloy at 1223-1423K were investigated. Spontaneous bulk growth did not occur on the alloy alone. but the uniform initiation and growth of the composite were obtained by putting a thin layer of SiO2 particles on the surface of the alloy. Without SiO2 the external surface of the oxide layer was convered by MgO and MgAl2O4. But with the SiO2 reaction initiate the porous ZnO layers were found on the growth surface. The higher process temperature yielded a lower metal content. The oxidation product of $\alpha$-Al2O3 was found to be oriented with c-axis parallel to th growth direction. The growth rates increased with temperature and the apparent activation energy was 111.8 kJ/mol.

  • Relatively inert surface of microcrystalline MgO was modified into chemically active one by carrying out controlled hydration followed by dehydration at elevated temperature under dynamic vacuum. Even though the treatment by the first cycle of hydration-dehydration did not alter the porosity of MgO, it largely enhanced surface reactivity of the MgO toward adsorbed water, turning its outer layer into brucite upon rehydration. Treatment by the second cycle of hydration-dehydration generated micropores, and slit-shaped mesopores, raising the porosity of the MgO. The overlayer of Fe2O3 of the core/shell type composite magnesium oxide enhanced this surface modification, turning its surface into more porous and more active one than that of uncoated MgO, after the treatment by the hydration-dehydration.

  • This study aims to investigate on the effects of alloying elements and heat treatment on the microstructures, wear and heat resistance of Al-Si-Cu-Mg-(Ni)/SiCp prepared by the duplex process developed in previous study, which consists of squeeze infiltration (1st process) and squeeze casting (2nd process). The hardness of composite increased with decrease in SiCp size and Ni addition in both the heat exposured composite and the as-cast one. And the heat and wear resisting properties was improved by the SiCp reinforcement and the Ni addition. The wear amount of Al/SiCp composite decreased with decreasing in the size of silicon carbide particle.

  • The microstructure and mechanical property of the Ni and Ni-Cr porous metal reinforced AC4C matrix composites fabricated by squeeze casting were investigated. In this study Ni, Ni-Cr porous metals which are estimated to be easy to fabricate by squeeze casting are used as strengtheners for composite materials. As a matrix material, Al-7wt.%Si-0.3wt.%Mg(AC4C) has been used. In case of Ni/AC4C and Ni-Cr/AC4C composite, $750^{\circ}C$ melt temperature and minimum 25MPa squeezing pressure are needed to produce sound composite materials. The observation of interfacial reaction zone at various heat treatment condition shows that atsolutionizing temperature of above $520^{\circ}C$, the interfacial reaction zone increases proportionally with heat treatment time and the reaction products formed by interfacial reactions are mainly composed by $Al_{3}Ni$ and $Al_{3}Ni_{2}$ phases.

  • A novel composite membrane was synthesized using crosslinked polyamide and fly ash ceramic substrate for phenol removal. Glutaraldehyde was used as crosslinker. Characterization shows that synthesized membrane possesses good permeability ($0.184l.m^{-2}.h^{-1}.kPa^{-1}$), MWCO (1.7 kDa), average pore size (1.08 nm) and good chemical stability. RSM was adopted for phenol removal studies. Box-Behnken-Design using quadratic model was chosen for three operating parameters (feed phenol concentration, pH and applied pressure) against two responses (phenol removal, flux). ANOVA shows that model is statistically valid with high coefficient of determination ($R^2$)value for flux (0.9897) and phenol removal (0.9302). The optimum conditions are obtained as pH 2, $46mg.l^{-1}$ (feed phenol concentration) and 483 kPa (applied pressure) with 92.3% phenol removal and $9.2l.m^{-2}.h^{-1}$ flux. Data validation with deviation of 4% confirms the suitability of model. Obtained results reveal that prepared composite membrane can efficiently separate phenol from aqueous solution.
