In the flux used in the batch galvanizing process, the effect of the component ratio of NH4Cl to ZnCl2 on the microstructure, coating adhesion, and corrosion resistance of Zn-Mg-Al ternary alloy-coated steel is evaluated. Many defects such as cracks and bare spots are formed inside the Zn-Mg-Al coating layer during treatment with the flux composition generally used for Zn coating. Deterioration of the coating property is due to the formation of AlClx mixture generated by the reaction of Al element and chloride in the flux. The coatability of the Zn-Mg-Al alloy coating is improved by increasing the content of ZnCl2 in the flux to reduce the amount of chlorine reacting with Al while maintaining the flux effect and the coating adhesion is improved as the component ratio of NH4Cl to ZnCl2 decreases. Zn-Mg-Al alloy-coated steel products treated with the optimized flux composition of NH4Cl·3ZnCl2 show superior corrosion resistance compared to Zn-coated steel products, even with a coating weight of 60 %.
The Al-7.7Zn-2.0Mg-1.9Cu-0.1Zr-0.1Sc alloy exhibited excellent elongation by the new thermomechanical treatment (TMT) process; solution treatment and furnace cooling\longrightarrowhot and cold rolling and then annealing for short time. Tensile test at high temperature from 430 to $500^{\circ}C$ has been performed with various strain rates using for the Al-7.7Zn-2.0Mg-1.9Cu-0.1Zr-0.1Sc alloy obtained by the TMT process. The elongation of the Al-7.7Zn-2.0Mg-1.9Cu-0.1Zr-0.1Sc was 550% tensile tested at $470^{\circ}C$ temperature and 2.2 $\times$$10^{-3}$$s^{-1}$ strain rate. The m value of Al-7.7Zn-2.0Mg-1.9Cu-0.1Zr-0.1Sc alloy deformed 85% increased from 0.33 to 0.46 with increasing total elongation. This new TMT process was very simple and easy to make the sheets in the company.
In order to broaden the range of application of light weight aluminum alloys, it is necessary to enhance the mechanical properties of the alloys and combine them with other materials, such as cast iron. In this study, the effects of adding small amounts of Cu and Zr to the Al-Si-Mg based alloy on tensile properties and corrosion characteristics were investigated, and the effect of the addition on the interfacial compounds layer with the cast iron was also analyzed. Although the tensile strength of the Al-Si-Mg alloy was not significantly affected by the additions of Cu and Zr, the corrosion resistance in 3.5 %NaCl solution was found to be somewhat lowered in this research. The influence of Cu and Zr addition on the type and thickness of the interfacial compounds layer formed during compound casting with cast iron was not significant, and the main interfacial compounds were identified to be Al5FeSi and Al8Fe2Si phases, as in the case of the Al-Si-Mg alloys.
Effect of aging treatment on the microstructures and mechanical properties of 7N01 Al alloy was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, transmission electron microscopy, microhardness measurement and tensile test. Maximum hardness(125.7Hv) and tensile strength(447.3MPa) were obtained from the specimen aged at $120^{\circ}C$ for 32hrs. The major precipitation hardening phase was confirmed as coherent $MgZn_2({\eta}^{\prime})$ phase. Microhardness changes after peakaged condition showed very large decrease upon increased aging time. This result was attributed to the high transformation rate from coherent ${\eta}^{\prime}$ to incoherent ${\eta}$. It was found that the precipitation sequence of 7N01 Al alloy was GP zone${\rightarrow}$metastable spherical hcp $MgZn_2({\eta}^{\prime}){\rightarrow}$ equilibrium rodlike hcp $MgZn_2({\eta})$.
Changes in microstructure and damping capacity with aging time for solutionized Mg-Al alloy have been investigated. Discontinuous ${\beta}\;(Mg_{17}Al_{12})$ precipitates form along the primary grain boundaries, the amount of which increases as the aging time increases. The hardness of the matrix with respect to aging time shows a typical "S" shape, indicating a generation of fine continuous precipitates in the matrix during the aging. The peak level of damping capacity is obtained after 1 hour of aging, over which the damping capacity becomes deteriorated continuously. The formation of optimum density of continuous ${\beta}$ precipitates with fine morphology which would act as pinning points for dislocation lines, might be responsible for the improvement of damping capacity.
Effect of iron and manganese contents on die soldering reaction has been studied in Al-9wt.%Si-0.3wt.%Mg alloy. Ternary ${\alpha}_{hcp}-Al_8Fe_2Si$ and ${\alpha}_{bcc}-Al_8Fe_2Si$ intermetallic compounds formed by interaction diffusion between Al-Si-Mg system alloy melt and SKD61 die steel surface. Thickness of soldering reaction layer in die steel surface decreased as Fe and Mn contents of the melts increased : When Fe content of Al-9wt.%Si-0.3wt.%Mg melts at constant 0.5wt%Mn content was 0.15wt.%, 0.45wt.% and 0.6wt.%, thickness of soldered layer of each alloy was $64.5{\mu}m,\;57.3{\mu}m$ and $46.9{\mu}m$ respectively. For Mn content of the alloy melts at constant 0.45wt.%Fe content was 0.30wt.%, 0.50wt.% and 0.70wt.%, thickness of soldered layer of each alloy was $66.1{\mu}m,\;57.3{\mu}m$ and $48.3{\mu}m$ respectively.
Effects of Ca addition on grain refinement, microstructure and mechanical properties of AZ31 Mg alloy were investigated. Due to Ca addition to Mg alloy (AZ31), the microstructure was refined, the quantity of $Mg_{17}Al_{12}$phase was reduced, and new $Al_2Ca$ phase was formed. The tensile property of AZ31 was increased with the minor addition of Ca, but was decreased rapidly over 0.2 wt.% of Ca content. The $Al_2Ca$ phase was considered to be detrimental to the mechanical property of AZ31 Mg alloy.
Properties of $Al_{86}Ni_6Ce_4Mg_4$ alloy powder produced by helium gas atomization process were investigated by using DSC, XRD, SEM and TEM. The powders below 32 ${\mu}m$ in diameter were identified as an amorphous phase mixed with a ${\alpha}-Al$ phase. $Al_{86}Ni_6Ce_4Mg_4$ bulk alloy was manufactured by hot extruding the alloy powders at various temperatures, and the estimation of its mechanical properties was carried out subsequently. As a result, the bulk alloy extruded at the temperature below $450^{\circ}C$ exhibited the microstructure in which the near-spherical shape of some powders below 20 ${\mu}m$ were nearly unchanged and fine voids between matrix and powders were formed during extrusion process. On the other hand, the tensile strength and elongation at room temperature for $Al_{86}Ni_6Ce_4Mg_4$ bulk alloy extruded at $450^{\circ}C$ were 750 MPa and 7.5%, respectively.
