  • This paper presents an approach for improving the use of VP-tree in video indexing and searching. A vantage-point tree or VP-tree is one of the metric space-based indexing methods used in multimedia database searches and data retrieval. Instead of relying on the Euclidean distance as a measure of search space, the proposed approach focuses on the trigonometric inequality for compressing the search range, which thus, improves the search performance. A test result of using 10,000 video files shows that this method reduced the search time by 5-12%, as compared to the existing method that uses the AESA algorithm.

  • Free-space optical (FSO) systems have attracted much attention from both research and application perspectives owing to their many benefits, such as license-free operation, low-cost, and high data rates. This paper investigates the ergodic capacity of FSO systems, which is an important metric of system performance. The stochastic temporary laser-beam blockage, pointing errors, and atmospheric turbulence are simultaneously considered. The results illustrate that the link blockage causes a decreased ergodic capacity. We show that to maximize the ergodic capacity, there is an optimal value of the laser-beam radius at the waist, which largely depends on pointing errors; however, it is independent of the atmospheric turbulence and the probability of link blockage.

  • In this article, we first give metric version of an iteration scheme of Agarwal et al. [1] and approximate fixed points of two finite families of nonexpansive mappings in hyperbolic spaces through this iteration scheme which is independent of but faster than Mann and Ishikawa scheme. Also we consider case of three finite families of nonexpansive mappings. But, we need an extra condition to get convergence. Our convergence theorems generalize and refine many know results in the current literature.

  • Let G be a closed subspace of a Banach space X and let (S,$\Omega$,$\mu$) be a $\sigma$-finite measure space. It was known that $L_1$(S,G) is proximinal in $L_1$(S,X) if and only if $L_p$(S,G) is proximinal in $L_p$(S,X) for 1$\infty$. In this article we show that this result remains true when "proximinal" is replaced by "Chebyshev". In addition, it is shown that if G is a proximinal subspace of X such that either G or the kernel of the metric projection $P_G$ is separable then, for 0 < p $\leq$ $\infty$. $L_p$(S,G) is proximinal in $L_p$(S,X)

  • In this paper we give some sharp expressions of the weakly convergent sequence coefficient WCS(X) of a Banach space X. They are used to prove fixed point theorems for involution mappings T from a weakly compact convex subset C of a Banach space X with WCS(X) > 1 into itself which $T^2$ are both of asymptotically nonexpansive type and weakly asymptotically regular on C. We also show that if X satisfies the semi-Opial property, then every nonexpansive mapping $T : C \to C$ has a fixed point. Further, some questions for asymtotically nonexpansive mappings are raised.

  • In this paper, we obtain the criteria that the Riemannian manifold B is Einstein or a gradient Ricci soliton from the information of the second derivative of $f$ in the warped product space $R{\times}_fB$ with gradient Ricci solitons. Moreover, we construct new examples of non-Einstein gradient Ricci soliton spaces with an Einstein or non-Einstein gradient Ricci soliton leaf using our main theorems. Finally we also get analogous criteria for the Lorentzian version.

  • Let M be a real hypersurface with almost contact metric structure $(\phi,g,\xi,\eta)$ in a complex space form $M_n(c)$, $c\neq0$. In this paper we prove that if $R_{\xi}L_{\xi}g=0$ holds on M, then M is a Hopf hypersurface in $M_n(c)$, where $R_{\xi}$ and $L_{\xi}$ denote the structure Jacobi operator and the operator of the Lie derivative with respect to the structure vector field $\xi$ respectively. We characterize such Hopf hypersurfaces of $M_n(c)$.

  • Since Alfsen and Effors [1] introduced the notion of an M-ideal, many authors [3,6,9,12] have worked on the problem of finding those Banach spaces X and Y for which K(X,Y), the space of all compact linear operators from X to Y, is an M-ideal in L(X,Y), the space of all bounded linear operators from X to Y. The M-ideal property of K(X,Y) in L(X,Y) gives some informations on X,Y and K(X,Y). If K(X) (=K(X,X)) is an M-ideal in L(X) (=L(X,X)), then X has the metric compact approximation property [5] and X is an M-ideal in $X^{**}$ [10]. If X is reflexive and K(X) is an M-ideal in L(X), then K(X)$^{**}$ is isometrically isomorphic to L(X)[5]. A weaker notion is a semi M-ideal. Studies on Banach spaces X and Y for which K(X,Y) is a semi M-ideal in L(X,Y) were done by Lima [9, 10].

  • Let M be a real hypersurface with almost contact metric structure (${\phi}$, ${\xi}$, ${\eta}$, g) in a nonflat complex space form $M_n(c)$. We denote by A and S be the shape operator and the Ricci tensor of M respectively. In the present paper we investigate real hypersurfaces with $g(SA{\xi},\;A{\xi})=const$. of $M_n(c)$ whose structure Jacobi operator $R_{\xi}$ commute with both ${\phi}$ and S. We give a characterization of Hopf hypersurfaces of $M_n(c)$.

  • A $JB^{*}-triple$ is a Banach space A on which the group Aut(B) of biholomorphic automorphisms acts transitively on the open unit ball B of A. In this case, a triple product {$\cdots$} from $A\;\times\;A\;\times\;A\;to\;A$ can be defined in a canonical way. If A is also the dual of some Banach space $A_{*}$, then A is said to be a JBW triple. A projection R on A is said to be structural if the identity {Ra, b, Rc} = R{a, Rb, c, }holds. On $JBW^{*}-triples$, structural projections being algebraic objects by definition have also some interesting metric properties, and it is possible to give a full characterization of structural projections in terms of the norm of the predual $A_{*}$ of A. It is shown, that the class of structural projections on A coincides with the class of the adjoints of neutral GL-projections on $A_{*}$. Furthermore, the class of GL-projections on $A_{*}$ is naturally ordered and is completely ortho-additive with respect to L-orthogonality.
