ZnS and $ZnS/TiO_2$ were prepared by chemical deposition. The prepared photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The generation of reactive oxygen species was detected by monitoring the oxidation reaction from 1,5-diphenyl carbazide (DPCI) to 1,5-diphenyl carbazone (DPCO). Excellent catalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) solution was observed using the $ZnS/TiO_2$ composites during irradiation with visible light. The results show that the photocatalytic performance of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles is improved by loading with ZnS.
A modified sol-gel method and $N_2$-plasma treatment were used to prepare bulk and surface doped N-$TiO_2$, respectively. XRD, TEM, UV-vis spectroscopy, $N_2$ adsorption, Elemental Analyzer, Photoluminescence, and XP spectra were used to characterize the prepared $TiO_2$ samples. The N doping did not change the phase composition and particle sizes of $TiO_2$ samples, but increased the visible light absorption. The photocatalytic activities were tested in the degradation of an aqueous solution of a reactive dyestuff, methylene blue, under visible light. The photocatalytic activity of surface doped N-$TiO_2$ prepared by $N_2$-plasma was much higher than that of bulk doped N-$TiO_2$ prepared by sol-gel method. The possible mechanism for the photocatalysis was proposed.
Three kinds of organometallic compounds (chromium acetylacetonate, magnesium acetate and vanadyl acetylacetonate) were used as transition metal precursor, titanium n-butoxide and multi-walled carbon nanotube as titanium and carbon precursor to prepare metal oxide-CNT/$TiO^2$ composites. The surface properties and morphology of metal oxide-CNT/$TiO^2$ composites were by Brauer-Emett-Teller (BET) surface area measurement, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. The photocatalytic activity of prepared metal oxide-CNT/$TiO^2$ composites was determined by the degradation effect of methylene blue in an aqueous solution under irradiation of visible light.
$SiO_2$-coated $TiO_2$ composite materials with enhanced photocatalytic activity under UV light was prepared by a simple catalytic hydrolysis method. XRD, TEM, UV-vis spectroscopy, Photoluminescence, FT-IR and XP spectra were used to characterize the prepared samples. The obvious shell-core structure was shown for obtained $SiO_2$@$TiO_2$ sample. The average thickness of the $SiO_2$ coating layer was 2-3 nm. The interaction between $SiO_2$ and $TiO_2$ restrained the recombination of excited electrons and holes. The photocatalytic activities were tested in the degradation of an aqueous solution of a reactive dyestuff, methylene blue, under UV light. The photocatalytic activity of $SiO_2$@$TiO_2$ was much higher than that of P25 and mechanical mixing sample $SiO_2/TiO_2$. The possible mechanism for the photocatalysis was proposed.
Mesoporous $TiO_2$ material was synthesized from diblock copolymers with ethylene oxide chains via a sol-gel process in aqueous solution. The properties of these materials were characterized with several analytical techniques including field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), wide angle X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, and Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) analysis. The mesoporous $TiO_2$ materials calcined at 400${^{\circ}C}$ were found to have specific surface areas 212 $m^2g^-1$, average pore sizes 6.2 nm, and their average crystal sizes were found to be 8.2 nm. The photocatalytic activity of mesoporous $TiO_2$ was characterized with UV-Vis spectroscopy, and it was found to be 5.8 times higher than that of Degussa P25 $TiO_2$ (P25). For deactivation of Escherichia coli, mesoporous $TiO_2$ also has high photocatalytic inactivity than that of P25. Such a high photocatalytic activity is explained with large surface area and small crystal size with wormhole-like mesoporous structure.
In this present paper, we prepared $MWCNT/TiO_2$ composites by using pre-oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with different titanium alkoxide precursors in benzene solvent. The composites were comprehensively characterized by BET surface area, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. The photoactivity of the prepared materials, under UV irradiation, was tested using methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solution. Finally, according to the results of MB removal experiment, it can be considered that the MB degradation infect mainly caused by photocatalytic effect of $TiO_2$. Furthermore, the bactericidal test of the composites was also determined. It was indicated that $MWCNT/TiO_2$ composites with sunlight had greater effectiveness for B. cereus, S. aureus and E. coli than any other experimental conditions.

With the increasing importance of environmental issues, the cementitious materials with self-cleaning or photocatalytic properties by introducing TiO2 materials have been gaining a lot of attention. In this work, the influence of TiO2 particle size and structure on its photocatalytic effect in cement paste was investigated. The degradation of methylene blue solution was used as the parameter for evaluating the photocatalytic effect of micro-TiO2 (m-TiO2), nano-TiO2 (n-TiO2), and TiO2 nanotube (TNT). Moreover, the effect of these three TiO2 materials on the cement hydration products was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermgravimetric analysis (TG). According to the results, it can be found that all of the TiO2 materials promoted the formation of hydration products, especially TNT. On the other hand, the m-TiO2 exhibited a better photocatalytic effect compared to other materials.

With the development of nano-reinforcement technology and the increasing concern for environmental issues, TiO2 nanomaterials have received wide attention as an additive besides carbon nanomaterials that can be used to enhance the mechanical properties of cement-based materials. Also, TiO2-based materials can allow cement-baned materials with photocatalytic capability, providing a potentially effective approach to reduce environmental problems. In this work, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and degradation of methylene blue solution were used as target to assess the effect of TiO2 nanotubes on the mechanical strength and photocatalytic effect of hardened cement paste at different curing time. According to the strength results, the optimum amount of TiO2 was identified as 0.5% of the weight of cement. Meanwhile, the TiO2 nanotubes-reinforced specimen exhibited better photocatalytic effect in the early stage of curing.
$CNT/TiO_2$ composites were prepared by using multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and various titanium alkoxide precursors. The composites were comprehensively characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. The photoactivity of the prepared materials under UV irradiation, was tested using the conversion of MB from model aqueous solution. Finally, according to the results of methylene blue (MB) removal experiment, we could see that sample CTOS have better MB removal effect than samples CTIP and CTPP.

We made attempts to improve photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles under visible light exposure by combining two additional treatments. N-doping of $TiO_2$ by ammonia gas treatment at $600^{\circ}C$ increased absorbance of visible light. By coating thin film of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), and subsequent vacuum-annealing at $800^{\circ}C$, $TiO_2$, became more hydrophilic, thereby enhancing photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$. Four types of $TiO_2$ samples were prepared, bare-$TiO_2$, hydrophilic-modified $TiO_2$ ($h-PDMS/TiO_2$), N-doped $TiO_2$ ($N/TiO_2$) and hydrophilic-modified and N-doped $TiO_2$ ($h-PDMS/N/TiO_2$). Adsorption capability was evaluated under dark condition and photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$ was evaluated by photodegradation of MB under blue LED (400 nm< ${\lambda}$) irradiation. N-doping on $TiO_2$ was characterized using XPS and hydrophilic modification of $TiO_2$ surface was analyzed by FT-IR spectrometer. It was found that N-doping and hydrophilic modification both had positive effect on enhancing adsorption capability and photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$ at the same time. Particularly, N-doping enhanced visible light absorption of $TiO_2$, whereas hydrophilic surface modification increased MB adsorption capacity. By combining these two strategies, photocatalytic acitivity under visible light irradiation became the sum of individual effects of N-doping and hydrophilic modification.
