  • The investigation of the formation of organic sulfur compounds (i.e., odor species), mainly methyl mercaptan and demethyl suifide, during kraft pulping has been conducted, in which both hardwood and softwood species were used. It was discovered that there is an organic sulfur compounds formation phase transition point with respect to delignification extent. The transition point occurs at a kappa number of approximately 35 and 20 for softwoods and hardwoods, respectively. The results also showed that both low sulfidity and anthraquinone (AQ) addition are helpful to control the formation of theses organic sulfur compounds during kraft pulping. Whereas Hexenuronic acid (HexA) has contribution to Kappa number, the extended delignification not only lead to low pulp yield, but also be adverse to odor control. A significant in-digester odor reduction can be achieved if the pulping is to be terminated before phase transition point and combined with AQ addition.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical effect of Korean medical treatments such as herbal medicine, acupuncture, and electroacupuncture by using the portable gas chromatograph OralChroma$^{TM}$ (Abimedical, Japan) in halitosis patients. Methods: We surveyed 30 halitosis patients who had visited the Oral Diseases Clinic in the Korean Medical Hospital of Kyunghee University from October, 2013 to November, 2014. Before starting Korean medical treatment, the subjects were evaluated on sociodemographic characteristics, severity of discomfort using visual analogue scale (VAS), unstimulated salivary flow rate (USFR), and halitosis associated life-quality test (HALT) score. To evaluate the therapeutic effect, we measured the volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) in breath by using OralChroma$^{TM}$ before and after 3 weeks treatment. Results: The concentration of total VSCs measured by OralChroma$^{TM}$ significantly decreased (p=0.001). Furthermore, the level of hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan also significantly decreased (p<0.05). However, although the level of dimethyl sulfide decreased as well, there was no significance(p>0.05). Conclusions: Korean medical treatment was effective in treating halitosis by decreasing VSCs. Further study, with well-designed randomized controlled trials with larger number of cases will be needed in the future.

  • Objectives: In order to review both the effects of sewage sludge dewaterability and deodorizing ability in the existing advanced sewage treatment process, BIO-CLOD (a solidified mixture of 10% Bacillus concentrate and inorganics) was used as an inorganic conditioner effective for deodorization treatment in addition to the removal of organic matter and nutritive salts. Methods: Sludge dewaterability was evaluated using specific resistance to filtration (SRF) experiments with six agitators and two types of commercially available BIO-CLOD; one that is made by grinding solid matter (powdered BIO-CLOD) and one that has been obtained by sieving a separation with a particle diameter of 100 mesh (100 mesh BIO-CLOD). For deodorization odor treatment experiments, 20 g of commercially available solid BIO-CLOD was submerged in four liters of sewage sludge and mixed and agitated for 45 days. Results: When BIO-CLOD was injected into sewage sludge to experimentally compare specific resistance to filtration (SRF), the optimum amount of BIO-CLOD to be injected was shown to be 2% w/v and the SRF value in this case was $1.35{\times}10^{12}m/kg$. pH changes following BIO-CLOD injection were within 6.5-7.0. By 14 days after submerging BIO-CLOD into the sewage sludge to evaluate its deodorizing ability, $H_2S$ decreased by 68% and methyl mercaptan decreased by 74%. By 45 days after the submergal, both items decreased by 100%, indicating deodorizing ability. Conclusion: To compare the levels of dewaterablity of sewage sludge at different particle sizes of inorganic conditioner, powdered BIO-CLOD, particle size 100 mesh BIO-CLOD, and bentonite were tested. It could be seen that as the powdered BIO-CLOD increased, the precipitability increased up to 62% in 30 minutes. As an inorganic conditioner, BIO-CLOD was identified as a stable sludge conditioner that does not affect pH.

  • In this study, the performance characteristics of solid phase microextraction (SPME) were investigated for three major odorous groups that consist of 10 individual compounds ([1] volatile organic compounds (VOC): benzene, toluene, p-xylene and styrene, [2] reduced sulfur compounds (RSC): hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, dimethylsulfide (DMS), dimethyldisulfide (DMDS), and carbon disulfide, and [3] amine: trimethylamine (TMA)). For the purpose of a comparative analysis, two types of SPME fiber ([1] polidimethylsiloxane/divinilbenzene (P/D) and [2] $Carboxen^{TM}$/polidimethylsiloxane (C/P)) were test ε d against each other for a series of standards prepared at different concentration levels (100, 200, and 500 ppb). To compare the analytical performance of each fiber, all standards were analyzed for the acquisition of calibration data sets for each compound. The results of P/D fiber generally showed that its calibration slope increased as a function of molecular weight across different VOCs; however, those of C/P fiber showed a fairly reversed trend. Besides, we confirmed that the application of SPME is limited to many sulfur compounds; only two compounds (DMS and DMDS) are sensitive enough to draw calibration results out of SPME. The calibration data for RSC show generally enhanced slop values for C/P relative to P/D fiber. However, in the case of TMA, we were not able to find a notable difference in their performance.

  • This study investigates the odor from combined sewer in urban areas and major odor-causing facilities. Monitorings are conducted in specific areas that have representative characteristics. In combined sewer in urban areas, the real-time monitorings on sulfur, complex odor and specified odor are conducted. And in major odor-causing facilities, the real-time monitorings on complex odor, specified odor are conducted. Odor from combined sewer in urban area is affected by the changes on floating population and the effluent of the septic tank. Also major odor-causing facilities are largely affected by the effluent of the septic tank. The major odor-causing substances are found to be hydrogen sulfide($H_2S$) and methyl mercaptan. To reduce the odor from combined sewer, improvement of effluent from the septic tank and reduction of sulfur compounds have to be done.

  • The covered stream of cities are considered an odor source. Also, the public do not want a wastewater treatment plant(WWTP) near their properties due to the emission of odor emanating from such sources, although they play an important role in urban development. The purpose of this study is to analyze the pattern distribution of the odorous compounds from the Nambu WWTP and Youngho stream in Busan. odor sampled four times were analyzed by instrumental analysis method and indirect olfactory method. The kinds of offensive odorous compounds examined are acetaldehyde, propion aldehyde, hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, dimethyl sulfide and ammonia. Also, Concentration of air pollutants has been calculated by ISCST3 models. At the result of this study, The Nambu WWTP releases sulfur compounds. And the major odorous were hydrogen sulfide (1,475 ppb) and acetaldehyde (95 ppb) at Youngho stream. The stink which residents feel will point out the Nambu WWTP mainly if the odor is removed with the improvement of a Youngho stream. Accordingly, we should pay more attention to appropriate components to processes in odor reducing plan at Nambu WWTP.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of mouthrinse products containing deep sea water. We used original deep sea water(DSW) and processed deep sea water desalinated by reverse osmosis at one time(DDW-1), by reverse osmosis at two times(DDW-2) and concentrated by reverse osmosis(CDW). We made 2 kinds of mouthrinse products containing CDW and other agents for smell and taste and one product without deep sea water. The negative control was distilled water. In vivo study, the dental plaque index scores and the gingival index scores were reduced after 4 weeks mouthrinsing three times daily with 4 kinds of deep sea water and 3 kinds of mouthrinse products(p<0.05). The pH of dental plaque in 1 minute after mouthrinsing was not higher than 5.5 in all solutions, but the pH in 20 minutes after mouthrinsing was higher than 5.7 in DSW, CDW and 3 kinds of products which had higher mineral contents. In vitro study, the mouthrinse solutions containing the higher mineral contents were also the more effective in reduction of methyl mercaptan which is one of the causes of halitosis. The 2 kinds of products containing deep sea water killed Streptococcus mutans(ATCC 25175) in culture plates in one minute. These results indicate the usability of deep sea water in mouthrinses for oral hygiene management.

  • Malodor emitted while producing fertilizer from hatchery egg waste treated with microorganism is an important limiting factor. To reduce this problem, we attempted to use two yeast strains, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, KACC 30008 and KACC 30068. Both yeast strains reduce ammonia gas emission 35.4% than only treated with bacterium, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens. When both strains were used together, that was reduced as 57.1%. KACC 30008 and 30068 strains reduced hydrogen sulfide 42 and 90.4%, respectively. Both strains together reduced hydrogen sulfide gas as 98.5%. KACC 30008 did not decrease methyl mercaptan emission. However KACC 30068 decreased 40% and both strains together decreased the gas emission as 66.7%. Overall, this study showed that yeast treatment could enhance the effect of B. amyloliquefaciens treatment in the reduction of malodorous gas emission.

  • The purpose of this study was to find out the degree of self-consciousness of oral malodor, the status of oral hygiene care, some oral examination factors, and measurement values of malodor compounds through conduction oral examination and questionnaire survey, and measuring volatile malodor compounds by instrumental analysis. The data were collected from 155 patients visiting a dental clinic by using a self-administered questionnaire, conducting oral examination for halitosis, and measuring malodor compounds with Oral Chroma. The rate of recognizing their breath as 'somewhat bad' were 80.0% for the female patients and 74.3% for the male, and, however, 14.3% of the male recognized their breath as 'very bad' while 18.8% of the female did not recognized oral malodor, showing statistically significant difference between gender(p=0.004). The average concentrations of volatile sulfur compounds measured by Oral Chroma were 1.65 ng/10 ml for hydrogen sulfide, 1.71 ng/10 ml for methyl mercaptan and 1.66 ng/10 ml for dimethyl sulfide, on the average, respectively, exceeding malodor threshold levels of all 3 compounds, and were significantly higher in the male group than those in the female, also exceeding all threshold levels except hydrogen sulfide values of the female group. The type of oral malodor was the most prevalent for Type I as 23.2%, followed by Type V, Type IV, Type II whileas Type I and Type IV in the female as 30.6% and 25.9% respectively, showing statistically significant difference by gender(p=0.006). The correlations among oral examination indices was the highest between tongue fur score and simplified oral hygiene index, followed by a significant reverse correlation between the number of fixed prosthodontic teeth and the number of dental caries(p=0.000).
