The effects of methanol and water extracts of Taheebo were investigated on gastric secretion, gastric lesion and ulcer in rate. Experimental gastric lesion and ulcer was produced in rats using the following methods : HCl.aspirin-induced lesion, HCl.ethanol-induced lesion, indomethacin-induced ulcer and water-immersion stress ulcer model. In addition, the amount of gastric secretion in pylorus-ligated rats for 4 hours was determined. Water extracts of Taheebo significantly inhibited HCl.aspirin-induced gastric lesion at 1,000mg/kg, po in rats. Likewise, Water extracts of Taheebo caused significant inhibition of indomethacin-induced ulcer at oral dose of 1,000mg/kg. The lesion induced by HCl.ethanol was significantly reduced by both water and methanol extracts of Taheebo. It also showed significant antiulcer activity in water-immersion stress ulcer, respectively. In gastric secretion experiments, methanol extracts of Taheebo also showed significant inhibition of gastric juice secretion, acidity and acid output at doses 500 and 1,000mg/kg. These results may suggest that Taheebo shows antigastritic and antiulcerative action in rats in part by the inhibition of gastric juice secretion and acidity.

The inhibitory effects of the water and methanol extracts of Jakwangdo and Honghyangmi on the rat microsome lipid peroxidation and growth of four human cancer cells such as HepG2 (liver cancer), SNU-1 (stomach cancer) MCF-7 (breast cancer) and SNU-C4 (colon cancer) were examined. The methanol extracts of red colored rices showed the antioxidant activity and growth inhibitory effects of cancer cells. However, water extracts did not show the activities. Inhibitory activities of methanol extracts of Jakwangdo and Honghyangmi against lipid peroxidation of rat microsome was 80% and 68%, respectively, at the concentration of 1 mg/assay. Jakwangdo methanol extracts showed the highest growth inhibitory activity in MCF-7 cells among the cancer cells tested. The methanol extracts of red colored rices were further fractionated with hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and butanol. Both chloroform and hexane fractions showed strong growth inhibitory activity in HepG2 and MCF-7 cells.

In the present study, we investigated the antifungal activity of methanol and ethanol extracts of different parts (leaves, twigs, and root bark) of mulberry plant against Alternaria alternata and Fusarium sp. Among them, the methanol and ethanol extracts of mulberry root bark exerted the highest inhibitory activity against the mycelial growth of A. alternata ($70.6{\pm}1.6$ to $80.8{\pm}6.7%$ and $58.7{\pm}0.0$ to $80.8{\pm}6.7%$, respectively) and Fusarium sp. ($15.5{\pm}2.7$ to $39.3{\pm}3.4%$ and $26.4{\pm}2.7$ to $47.6{\pm}4.8%$, respectively). In contrast, the methanol and ethanol extracts from mulberry leaves and twigs did not suppress the mycelial growth of these fungal species. Importantly, the methanol and ethanol extracts of mulberry leaves tended to even accelerate the mycelial growth of A. alternata and Fusarium sp. Therefore, the results of this study indicate that methanol and ethanol extracts of mulberry root bark can be used as control agents against A. alternata and Fusarium sp.

The solvent extracts of Ulmi cortex, which were extracted by using several solvents with different polarities, were prepared for utility as a natural preservatives. The antimicrobial activities and cell growth inhibitions were investigated to each strain with the different concentrations of Ulmi cortex extracts. Methanol extract showed the highest antimicrobial activity. The methanol extract was represented the broad antimicrobial activities for the gram positive and negative strains. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) for each strains were appeared to around 0.3mg/ml at each of Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, and Staphylococcus aureus. The cell growth inhibitions were not shown on Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Lac tobacillus plantarum, and Bifidobacterium bifidum, but greatly on the Clostridium butyricum. The meth anol extracts were further reextracted sequentially with hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and butanol for purifying crude methanol extracts. The extract, which was reextracted by butanol, showed the highest antimicrobial activity.
This study was performed to investigate the effect of Mori Folium and Crataegus pinnatifida leave extracts on liver damage induced by CC1$_4$ in rats. 30% and 60% methanol extracts of Mori Folium and Crataegus pinnatifida leaves were administered orally at the dose of 10 mg/kg on every day for 6 days and liver damage was induced by intraperitoneal injection of $CCl_4$ (0.4 ml/kg) on 6th day. 30% Methanol extracts of Mori Folium treated group showed significant protective effect on hepatotoxicity with the lowest Glutamic Oxaloacetic Transaminase (GOT) and Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase (GPT). The low density lipoprotein (LDL) levels of 30% methanol extracts of Mori Folium and Crataegus pinnatifida leave and 60% methanol extracts of Mori Folium treated groups were significantly lower than normal group, respectively. In particular, LDL level of 30% Mori Folium extracts treated group was significantly decreased compared to $CCl_4$ treated group. These results support that Mori Folium and Crataegus pinnatifida leave extracts are hepatoprotective effects against hepatotoxicity induced by $CCl_4$.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the antioxidant effects and antimicrobial activity of extracts from yacon powder. The total polyphenol contents of yacon powder extracted with methanol was 38.5 mg/g, while extracted with water was 24.0 mg/g. Extractions with methanol were therefore more effective than with water. The total flavonoid contents of yacon powder extracted with methanol was 9.2 mg/g, while that with water was 7.8 mg/g. The electron donating ability of yacon powder extracts, natural antioxidant, and artificial antioxidant at 1.0 mg/mL arranged in order of decreasing concentration were ascorbic acid (98.7%) > BHT (44.7%) > methanol extract (12.1%) > water extract (7.8%). Nitrite-scavenging ability of yacon powder extracted with methanol at pH 1.2 was 13.1%, while that of powder extracted with water at pH 1.2 was 6.8%. And, the hydroxyl radical scavenging activities of yacon powder with methanol at 5 mg/mL was 40.2%. The antimicrobial activity of yacon powder extracted with methanol could be detected on Bacillus cereus ($10,000{\mu}g/disc$) and Staphylococcus aureus ($10,000{\mu}g/disc$).
This study was carried out to investigate the oxidative stability of oils from peril1a seeds roasted at $190^{\circ}C$ for $0{\sim}50$ min. The oxidative stability of perilla oils increased as the roasting time increased. Oxidative stability of perilla oils extracted methanol extracts significantly decreased. When 1.0%(w/w) methanol and hexane fractions prepared from methanol extracts added to the unroasted perilla oils, methanol fractions showed strong antioxidative effects, but hexane fractions showed weak effects. As the roasting time increased, the browning intensity, fluorescence and electron donating ability of methanol extracts, methanol and hexane fractions increased, and those were closely related with antioxidative effects.
The antioxidative effect of Aloe extracts on 0.1 M-linoleic acid was compared with some commercial antioxidants during storage at 50${\pm}$2$^{\circ}C$ for 20 hours, and on soybean oils at 60${\pm}$2$^{\circ}C$ for 30 days. In the oxidation of linoleic acid, antioxidative effects of various Aloe extracts and other antioxidants were shown as following orders: 3% Aloe methanol extract > 1% Aloe methanol extract > 0.02% BHT > 3% Aloe ethyl acetate extract > 0.5% Aloe methanol extract > 0.02%-Tocopherol>Aloe methanol extract, 0.1, 0.02% > Aloe ethylacetate extract, 1, 0.5, 0.1, 0.02% > control, while in the oxidation of soybean oil, l% Aloe methanol extract > 0.02% BHT > 3% Aloe methanol extract > 0.02%-Tocopherol>control.
The antioxidant and synergistic effect of methanol extracts of onion skin were investigated by measuring peroxide value. The inhibitory effects of the extracts against metal catalyzed oxidation were also studied. The antioxidant activity of methanol extract (0.02%) of onion skin was stronger than that of mixed tocopherol or ascorbic acid (0.02%), but weaker than that of BHT (0.02%). However, the methanol extract at the concentration of 0.04% exhibited strong antioxidant effect, comparable to that of BHT (0.02%). The methanol extract showed very strong synergistic effect with the mixed tocopherol. The methanol extracts at the concentration of 0.03% and 0.04% acted as metal deactivator in the presence of FeC1$_3$. As a metal deactivator, methanol extract of onion skin appeared to be more effective than citric acid.
In the present study, we investigated the glutathione S-transferase (GST) induction of medicinal plants using a cultured PC12 cells. The methanol extracts of Dendrobium nobile Lindley, Schizonepeta tenuifolia Briquet, Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fischer, Paenoia lactiflora Pall were tested. As the result, exposure of PC12 cells to G. uralensis resulted in the significant induction of GST. On the continuous experiment, G. uralensis was extracted with methanol, ethanol, and acetone. Among these extracts, methanol extracts showed the highest GST induction. The methanol extracts were further fractionated with hexane, diethyl ether, ethyl acetate, and water layer according to the degree of polarity. The diethyl ether layer showed the highest exhibited GST induction on PC12 cells. Based on these results suggest that the extracts of G. uralensis can be applicable for the development of a new antioxidant agent.
