  • Green manure crops are organic materials that can supply organic matter and substitute chemical fertilizer, yet emit methane while being decomposed. Therefore, we experimented with different kinds of Green manure crops and tillage depth in order to decrease the amount of methane emitted when utilizing Green manure crops in paddy soil. The amount of methane emitted during the cultivation period of rice started to increase after transplanting and peaked at 63, and 74 days after transplanting, than decreased to almost none starting from 106 days. According to the kind of Green manure crop, it was highest in barley, then hairy vetch and chemical fertilizer. Depending on the tillage depth, the amount of methane emitted decreased by 22.5% in chemical fertilizer, 12.4% in hairy vetch and 11.7% in barley in 20cm tillage compared to 10cm tillage. The air temperature of methane test period was $30{\sim}40^{\circ}C$, and the soil temperature was more than about $2{\sim}10^{\circ}C$ lower than the air temperature. Due to the irrigation started before transplanting, the oxidation-reduction potential (Eh) of soil was rapidly reduced, and showed negative (-) values. Eh values mostly kept the range of -300~-500 mV during rice cultivation. It rapidly increased 106 days after transplanting. Rice yield the highest in hairy vetch and did not show differences according to tillage depth. Methane emission could be effectively reduced if the paddy soil was tilled by 20 cm during the application of hairy vetch.

  • This study was conducted to investigate methane emission under different rice cultural practices in paddy soil (Jeonbug Series, occurring on fluvio-alluvial plain). The rates of application of fresh rice straw were 5,000kg/ha in combination with 110 and 160kg N/ha as chemical fertilizer. The methane emission among the rice cultural practices was in the order of transplanting cultivation, direct seeding on flooded surface and direct seeding on dry paddy field. The average methane flux was $10.27mg/m^2/h$ in direct, seeding on dry paddy field and $24.1mg/m^2/h$ in transplanting cultivation. The diurnal variation of methane emission at heading stage was high from 9 a.m. till 7 p.m. and the methane emission rate was highly correlated with air temperature fluctuation and soil Eh. The seasonal change of methane flux was high from ear formation stage to heading stage.

  • Flame lift-off conditions determine the operating conditions of burners. It is known that a flame can be lifted when the Schmidt number (Sc), which is the ratio of the dynamic viscosity to the mass diffusivity, is greater than unity. In this study, the flame lift-off characteristics of non-premixed flames of propane (Sc > 1) and methane (Sc < 1) in a coaxial outer air tube were experimentally compared. The experimental results indicated that stable lifted flames could be obtained even when Sc < 1 in a confined air tube. On the basis of the results of a simple numerical analysis, it was confirmed that a new flame stabilization mechanism exists in the tube. A velocity field is preferentially developed upstream of the flame, and it results in a new stabilization condition. This result can be very useful in explaining the stabilization of the flames of ordinary burners in which a flame is produced in a confined space.

  • Burned gas of methane-air mixtures with water vapor have been analysed to study the exhaust emission using gas-chromatography and computation. The computations were carried out for the gas analysis using premix code of Chemkin program to compare the experimental results. The quantity of water vapor contained were changed 5% and 10% of total mixtures, and equivalence ratio of mixtures between 0.6 and 1.2 were tested under the ambient temperature 323K and 373K. The results showed CO, $CO_2$ decreased and $H_2$ increased by increasing the water contents. The CO increased and $CO_2$ decreased by increasing the ambient temperature. The $CO_2$ shows the maximum product at equivalence ratio 1.0, in otherwise the $CH_4$ produced the minimum values in the same range. The results showed little difference between these two methods.

  • The Laminar lifted methane jet flames diluted with helium and nitrogen in co-flow air have been investigated experimentally. The chemiluminescence intensities of $OH^{\ast}$ and $CH_2O^{\ast}$ radicals and the radius of curvature for tri-brachial flame were measured using an intensified charge coupled device (ICCD) camera, monochromator and digital video camera. The product of $OH^{\ast}$ and $CH_2O^{\ast}$ is used as a excellent proxy of heat release rate. These methane jet flames could be lifted in buoyancy and jet dominated regimes despite the Schmidt number less than unity. Lifted flames were stabilized due to buoyancy induced convection in buoyancy-dominated regime. It was confirmed that increased $OH^{\ast}$ and $CH_2O^{\ast}$ concentration caused an increase of edge flame speed via enhanced chemical reaction in buoyancy dominated regime. In jet momentum dominated regime lifted flames were observed even for nozzle exit velocities much higher than stoichiometric laminar flame speed. An increase in radius of curvature in addition to the increased $OH^{\ast}$ and $CH_2O^{\ast}$ concentration stabilizes such lifted flames.

  • A cylindrical constant volume combustion chamber was used to investigate the exhaust emission characteristics of homogeneous charge, stratified pattern and inhomogeneous charge under various conditions using gas chromatography. In the case of homogeneous charge condition, the $CO_2$ concentration is proportional to excess air ratio and overall charge pressure, the $CO_2$ concentration is proportional to excess air ratio and the UHC concentration is inversely proportional to ignition time and overall charge pressure. In the case of stratified pattern, the RI(rich injection) condition shows better exhaust emission characteristics, especially $CO_2$, than that of HI (homogeneous injection) or LI (lean injection) conditions. In inhomogeneous charge conditions, when initial charge pressure is increased, $CO_2$ and UHC concentration is reduced but $O_2$ concentration is increased. And when the excess air ratio of initial charge mixture is 3.0, UHC and $CO_2$concentration show lowest values.

  • The Measurement of Pollution in the Troposphere (MOPITT) instrument is an eight-channel gas correlation radiometer launched on the Earth Observing System (EOS) Terra spacecraft in 1999. Its main objectives are to measure carbon monoxide (CO) and methane (CH4) concentrations in the troposphere. This work analyzes tropospheric carbon monoxide distributions using MOPITT data in East Asia and compared ozone distributions. In general, seasonal CO variations are characterized by a spring peak and decreased in the summer. Also, this work revealed that the seasonal cycles of CO are spring maximum and summer minimum with averaged concentrations ranging from 118ppbv to 170ppbv. The CO monthly means show a similar profiles to those of O3. This fact clearly indicates that the high concentration of CO in spring is caused by two possible causes: the photochemical CO production in the troposphere, transport of the CO in the northeast Asia. The CO and O3 seasonal cycles in northeast Asia are influenced extensively by the seasonal exchange of the different types of air mass due to the Asian monsoon. The continental air masses contain high concentrations of O3 and CO due to higher continental background concentrations and sometimes due to the contribution of regional pollution. In summer the transport pattern is reversed. The Pacific marine air masses prevail over Korea, so that the marine air masses bring low concentrations of CO and O3, which tend to give the apparent minimum in summer.

  • The effects of EGR and premixedness on NO formation have been numerically investigated. The flame structure is classified into three categories; premixed flame($=1)$, rich/lean premixed flame(${\alpha}=0.6$ and 0.8) and diffusion flame(${\alpha}=0$). NO formation/destruction mechanisms are assorted to thermal, reburn and Fenimore mechanisms. The temperature of unburned gas is arranged to 298 and 500 K to have access to the condition in a real internal combustion engine. The results show that all three NO formation/destruction reaction rates in the fuel rich flame zone could be decreased by EGR for rich/lean premixed flames, while those in the fuel lean flame zone are not significantly changed. Near the stagnation plane, however, only the thermal NO reaction rate is decreased. The contribution of reburn and Fenimore mechanisms for the net NO production becomes less significant as the premixedness of a flame increases. The larger amount of NO reduction with EGR is expected under the higher temperature and/or higher fuel/air premixedness conditions due to the increased contribution of the thermal mechanism. The role of Fenimore and reburn mechanisms could be important for rich premixed and diffusion flames; therefore, the effect of EGR on NO reduction could vary with fuel/air premixedness. The premixedness of a partially premixed flame changes the flame structure and could affect the NO production characteristics.

  • Visible spectral characteristics of cross-sectional emissions from a partially premixed methane/air and propane/air flames have been investigated. An optical train with a two-axis scanning mirror system was used to record line-of-sight emission spectra from 354nm to 618nm, and inversion technique was adapted to obtain cross-sectional emission spectra. By analyzing the reconstructed emission spectra, cross-sectional intensities of CH and $C_2$ radicals were separated from the background emissions. The blue flame edge and yellow flame edge were also obtained by image processing technique for edge detection with color photograph of flame. These edges were compared with radial distributions of CH, $C_2$ radicals and background emissions. The CH radicals were observed at blue flame edge. The background emissions were generated by soot precursor at upstream of flame and by soot at downstream of flame. The $C_2$ radicals in propane/air flame were observed more than those in methane/air flame.

  • The effects of configuration of fuel and air tubes on the flame stabilization were experimentally investigated in half-closed combustors. Flame behaviors and stabilities of methane, propane, and DME flames were compared by changing tube diameters and the locations of the fuel and air tubes. It was found that flammability limits are significantly affected by the outlet boundary condition, which disturbs compositions of burned and unburned mixtures near the flame base. And it was found that there exist critical inner tube heights, over which flame stability is determined only by the fuel flow rate. Conclusively, flame stabilization is governed by the flame propagation velocity in an ordinary mixing flow and the non-uniform mixture concentration in the combustion space which is affected by flow recirculation and the combustor configuration. The compositions of $NO_x$ and CO were compared to know basic characteristics of methane, propane, and DME flames.
