  • Non-tuberculous mycobacterium has a wide-spread occurrence in nature, and skin, soft tissue, bone, lung and disseminated infection can be involved. Non-tuberculous mycobacterium infection occurs both in immunocompetent patients without underlying diseases and in immunocompromised hosts. Non-tuberculous mycobactrial osteomyelitis is a rare cause of granulomatous osteomyelitis, and has been previously reported in the sternum, spine, humerus, femur, tibia or metatarsal. Mycobacterium abscessus osteomyelitis is a very rare infection in the foot and only 1 case has been reported. Authors report a case of Mycobacterium abscessus osteomyelitis involving the tarsal and metatarsal bones in a non-immunocompromized middle aged women.

  • We analyzed the impulse on 24 sensors location under the foot using the Parotec system for the investigation of the relationship between the shoe type and the foot pathologies. Total 7 kinds of shoes, i.e. sport shoe, high heel shoes (5cm heel, 8cm heel, 13cm heel), platform shoe, inline skate, and heelys were evaluated for 20 normal subjects. Compared with the impulse distribution of the sport shoe, greater impulses were shown at the 1$^{st}$ phalange and the 1$^{st}$ metatarsal-phalangeal head in high-heel shoes, lateral tarsal bone and medial metatarsal bone in platform shoe, medial tarsal bone in inline-skate, and medial tarsal bone and 1st phalange in heelys shoe. The result of this study is expected to provide useful information about the relationship between the shoe type and the foot pathologies.ies.

  • Objective : The objective of this study is to observe the effect of anti-inflammatory herbal acupuncture on the metatarsal tendinitis. Methods : After the application of herbal acupuncture, the VAS and Baumgaertner's nine point scale were assessed. If there were any restraints on the ROM, ROM was also assessed alongside the previous scales. Results : 1. The pain was reduced significantly according to the VAS scale. 2. As to the assessment of satisfaction in treatment, by the Baumgaertner's nine point scale, 2 out of 3 cases scored Excellent, and one case scored Good. Conclusions : The anti-inflammatory herbal acupuncture is effective to the metatarsal tendinitis, and can be used more frequently in the clinical practices.

  • This study was initiated to investigate suitability of men's dress shoe sizes made for young men. Experiments were performed on 172 men for 19 to 29 years of age. Nine dimensions were measured from the subject's right foot and 11 dimensions were measrued from the outline of the foot. The data were analyzed for six different groups. The subjects were grouped by their dress shoe size or the ratio of the foot width to foot length. The result of the experiments lead to the following conclusions: 1. Foot length, metatarsal width and heel width were significantly different among the small, medium and large dress shoe size groups. 2. No significant differences in front foot angle and the inside metatarsal width were found among the above three groups. 3. The difference between wearing shoe size and the foot length was larger for the subjects with wide foot shape.

  • The effects of acupuncture treatment and taping therapy on a 22-year-old man who suffered from left foot pain due to Lisfranc joint injury were examined. Fractures of the first, second, and third metatarsal bones and a cuneiform bone were treated with acupuncture and taping therapy from March 24, 2017 to May 4, 2017. The patient was evaluated using the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society's Ankle-Hindfoot Scale. His Ankle-Hindfoot Score increased from 27 points pre-treatment to 65 points post-treatment. There were no side effects. While the improvement observed in this patient is encouraging, no definitive conclusion on the effects of acupuncture treatment and taping therapy on Lisfranc joint injuries can be reached without further large-scale study.

  • In-shoe measurement systems allow the clinician and researcher to examine the pressure parameters within the shoe. The purpose of this study was to investigate the test-retest reliability of plantar pressures using the Parotec system over speeds and plantar regions. Seventeen healthy subjects were recruited for the study. Sampling rate was 100 Hz, and data of six variables (pressure on medial heel, lateral heel, 1st metatarsal head, 5th metatarsal head, and great toe and total impulse) were collected in four different gait speed (1.0 m/sec, 1.5 m/sec, 2.0 m/sec, and comfortable walking speed) in each day. The result indicates fair to excellent reliability between the two day test. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) ranged from .693 to .979, and range of reliability was similar depending on the speed and plantar region. In most cases, data recorded by the Parotec systems provide good evidence for the reliability.

  • We analyzed the pressure, impulse on 24 sensors location under the foot using the Parolee system. Total 7 kinds of shoes, i.e. sport shoe, high heel shoes (5cm heel, 8cm heel, 13cm heel), platform shoe, inline skate, and heelys were evaluated for 20 normal subjects. Compared with those of sport shoe, greater pressure and impulse were shown on the 1 st phalange and the 1 st metatarsal head and greater impulse on the medial tarsal bone in high-heel shoes. Greater pressure and impulse were shown on medial metatarsal bone and the lateral tarsal bone in platform shoe. Greater impulse was shown on the medial tarsal bone in inline-skate. Heelys shoe showed smaller impulse on the central area of foot. The result of this study is expected to provide useful information about the relationship between the shoe type and the foot pathologies.

  • Acquired Hallux varus is defined radiographically by a negative metatarsophalangeal angle and clinically by adduction of the hallux on the first metatarsal and most commonly occurs after hallux valgus surgery. It's the prevalence has ranged from 2% to 17%. We report a case of hallux varus resulted from weakening of support of lateral soft tissue and resection of an excessive amount of the metatarsal head during a bunionectomy after initial correction of hallux valgus. We corrected the hallux varus deformity using transfer of extensor hallucis brevis tendon with reconstruction os lateral capsule.

  • Two subspecies are known to Family Hylidae(Order Anura) in Korea : namely , Hylaarborea japonica GUENTHER and H.a.stepheni BOULENGER, and they have been hitherto distinguished as different subspecies from four characteristics : the rate of interorbital to incternasal length, the rate of diameter of tympanum to diameter of 3 rd finger disc, the rate of the length of inner metatarsal tubercle to diameter of 3 rd finger disc, and the rate of inner metatarsal tubercle to the length of lst toe. The author has compared the above to subspecies for the characteristics with 123 individuals collected from ten different localities in Korea and has found that their fluctation curves overlap each other. The author considers, therefore, that the four characteristics could not be assumed as keys for the classification of the two subspecies and has reached the conclusion that these two subspecies should be regarded as one subspecies and Hyla arborea japonica GUENTHER should be given to both of them as the subspecies name.

  • Hallux valgus is a deformity characterized by lateral deviation of the great toe and medial deviation of the first metatarsal. When planning an operative treatment, it is important to realize that the deformity is tridimensional and diverse. Operative techniques include medial eminence resection, distal soft tissue procedure, first metatarsal osteotomy (distal, diaphyseal, proximal, or multiple), proximal phalanx osteotomy, arthrodesis (first metatarsophalangeal or metatarsocuneiform joint), and so on. Among these techniques, osteotomy is the main procedure for correcting the hallux valgus. The objective of this article is to describe the characteristics and recent advancements made for corrective osteotomies in the hallux valgus. The pathophysiology of the hallux valgus is also described.
